A Reconsideration on the Efficiency of the Extended Projection Principle (데이터분석을 통한 확대투사원리의 효율성 제고)

  • Main concern will be put at suggesting an alternative idea about the basic notion of the Extended Projection Principle (henceforth, ECP) which has been slightly changed since the initial appearance of the EPP. The EPP had been dependent on Case and theta-role under the era of the early generative grammar, whereas it was reduced only to the categorial feature [D] under the minimalism. Various data such as Locative Inversion constructions, there-expletive constructions, and sentences related to binding theory will be dealt with to suggest an plausible alternative idea. As a conclusion, it will be attested that the SPEC position of the inflectional clause should be filled with a maximally projected lexical item. This conclusion will be reached by analyzing lots of linguistic data.

  • Geis (1973) has provided various properties of the subjects and by + Gerund Phrase (GerP) in English causative constructions. Among them, the two main issues of Geis's analysis are as follows: unlike Lakoff (1965; 1966), the subject of English causative constructions, including causative-inchoative verbs such as liquefy, first of all, should be acts or events, not persons, and the by + GerP in the construction is a complement of the causative verbs. In addition to these issues, Geis has provided various data exhibiting other idiosyncratic properties and proposed some transformational rules such as the Agent Creation Rule and rule orderings to explain them. Against Geis's claim, I propose that English causative verbs require either Proper nouns or GerP subjects and that the by + GerP in the constructions as a Verbal Modifier needs Gerunds, whose understood Affective-agent subject is identical to the subject of causative verbs with respect to the semantic index value. This enables us to solve the two main issues. At the same time, the other properties Geis mentioned also can be easily accounted for in Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) by positing a few lexical constraints. On this basis, it is shown that given the few lexical constraints and existing grammatical tools in HPSG, the constraint-based analysis proposed here gives a simpler explanation of the properties of English causative constructions provided by Geis without transformational rules and rule orderings.

English Sounds to Japanese Ears

  • For the learners of English as a foreign language, oral repetition of model sentences is an e essential practice to improve their listening and speaking abilities of English. Skill training of both speech perception and production is involved in this practice. This paper reports on an observation of production e$\pi$ors in such practice made by Japanese college students in my class. The teaching material used is intended for acquainting the learners with basic English rhythm and intonation p patterns. The students were required to repeat each sentence in a series of conversations after a model reading. Although the vocabulary and expressions were rather limited, I monitored different kinds of errors in their repetition. Putting aside intonation, their difficulties are classified into five types; 1. Omission of words or morphemes, 2. Addition of unnecessary words or morphemes, 3. Replacement of words, 4. Japanization of English sounds, 5. Wrong rhythm caused by improper stress assignment. Accurate listening, especially to weakly stressed syllables and to assimilated sounds, as has often been pointed out, is the most difficult part in perception for them. Japanese sound system interferes in production of English sounds. More often than not their knowledge of grammar or the context does not work at all to guess the words they are hearing

  • The completion of the Human Genome Project that identified all 3 billion base pairs in the human genome can be seen as a step towards understanding the relay of information and intention within an organism, or in other words, the language of life. The faculty of human language, key to differentiating humans from other animate species, works for conveying information to others by mapping meaning to sound based on syntactic structures. This resemblance between life and language has not gone unnoticed; the literature on RNA transcription and translation research regularly uses linguistic metaphors and the biolinguistic perspective of language has also been studied. By examining the biological characteristics of language and the linguistic characteristics of life, this study aims to identify key mechanisms shared between the two systems in order to promote a stronger connection between them. It furthers this goal by pointing out two general messages to which these mechanisms aim, productivity and accuracy, and discovers what lesson these messages give to a human society geared for sustainability.

  • The purpose of this study investigates high school students' recognition and realities on the integrated science essay and is to suggest desirable direction of integrated science essay of how eduction. To this end, this paper was a questionnaire developed for use, it consists of the status, the writing skills and recognition of integrated science essay. Firstly, all grade students recognize the interest in integrated science essay class, but the need for third grade boys urgently was feeling. Second, STEAM class as a whole than average preference was. Third, integrated science essay was the most relevant, then was mathematics, languages, philosophy ethics, and social. Fourth, integrated science essay class with boys than girls in grade 1, science essay writing, reading science-related essay books, grammar, knowledge of the science and philosophy of science lessons, classes STEAM, read commentary essay reference all on the item, the higher affinity. Currently being implemented in integrated science essay test compared to the first, team teaching approach in schools project under one class teaches students how many teachers should be made. Second, it would require modifications of course content tailored to the preferences of female preference for science higher grade female students to disappear.

통합지식표현에 의한 자연언어처리기법 : 한글 구 구조문법

  • 컴퓨터에 의한 종래의 자연언어처리에서는 보통 생성과 인식과정에서 서로 다른 지식 표현과 프로그램을 쓰고, 음운처리, 형태처리, 통어처리, 의미처리로 분리되어 있는 것이 통례이다. 이것을 분할접근법(devide and conguer approach)이라 부른다. 분할접근법은 인간의 언어처리에 있어서의 생성, 인식간의 체계적 관계를 포착하지 못할 뿐 아니라 공학적으로도 갖가지의 문제를 안고 있다. 이 논문은 인간의 언어 생성과 인식과정의 관계를 설명하기 위하여 동일 심적 프로그램이 생성과정과 인식과정을 동시에 제어하고 있다는 가설에 선다. 이 가설을 취하는 것은 생성과 인식의 프로그램과 문법을 각각 통합하고 음운처리, 형태처리, 통어처리, 의미처리를 동시에 행해야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 이것을 통합접근법(unifying approach)이라 부른다. 통합 접근법은 예를 들어 구 구조문법 (Pharase Structure Grammar)과 단일화 (unification)에 의해서 실현할 수 있다. 구 구조 문법을 이용하여 음운정보, 형태정보, 구문정보, 의미정보를 동일의 구조중에 표현할 수 있고 그 위에 이들의 정보표현을 모두 단일화에 의해 동시에 처리할 수 있다. 단일화는 입출력의 방향을 제한하지 않으므로 생성.인식 양쪽의 문법을 얻을 수 있다. 또 단일화되는 패턴에 충족 가능한 조건을 부여함에 따라 패턴에 다양한 정보를 갖게 할 수 있으므로 처리상의 일반성을 파악할 수 있으며 처리 효율을 확보할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 통합접근법을 도입한 한글기술문법 : KPSG(Korean Phrase Structure Grammer)의 선진성에 대해서 논의하고 있다.

  • From mid-1890's, biometricians and Mendelians debated over Darwin's evolutionary theory. Biologist W. Weldon and Mathematician K. Pearson were leaders of the biometric school and biologist W. Bateson led Mendelian school. In this paper topics of the controversy such as causation vs. correlation, frequency distribution are considered. And in relation to the tradition of British statistics, we consider the philosophy of Karl Pearson revealed in this debate. Besides many statistical methods and concepts by Karl Pearson, the newly born mathematical statistics got a new journal Biometrika, a department in university, and a school of researchers from this controversy.

Design and Implementation of Web based System for Improving of English Reading Ability (효과적인 영문 독해능력 향상을 위한 웹 기반 시스템 설계 및 구현)

  • Since some methodologies of using Internet on English reading have been appeared, most of them have just led students to find some articles on the Internet and translate them into their first language. However, these methodologies have been criticized in that they can not provide naturalistic environment for practical English reading. There are some problems in using Internet for practical English reading. First, the level of vocabularies and grammar of articles from the Internet has not been proved to be appropriate for students. Usually, their level is too high for most students. Second, it needs computer using ability as well as English proficiency if a student successfully finds an article which he or she wants to on the Internet in a limited time. Finally, a teacher should be trained to lead students to participate in a classroom discussion to get, appropriate gists of articles. With all these problems, it is difficult only to use articles from the Internet for successful English reading. Therefore, this study tries to find out some critical problems and solve them, and construct English reading courseware system on the Internet.

  • 문법 교정 모델은 입력된 텍스트에 존재하는 문법 오류를 탐지하여 이를 문법적으로 옳게 고치는 작업을 수행하며, 학습자에게 더 나은 학습 경험을 제공하기 위해 높은 정확도와 재현율을 필요로 한다. 이를 위해 최근 연구에서는 문단 단위 사전 학습을 완료한 모델을 맞춤법 교정 데이터셋으로 미세 조정하여 사용한다. 하지만 본 연구에서는 기존 사전 학습 방법이 문법 교정에 적합하지 않다고 판단하여 문단 단위 데이터셋을 문장 단위로 나눈 뒤 각 문장에 G2P 노이즈와 편집거리 기반 노이즈를 추가한 데이터셋을 제작하였다. 그리고 문단 단위 사전 학습한 모델에 해당 데이터셋으로 문장 단위 디노이징 사전 학습을 추가했고, 그 결과 성능이 향상되었다. 노이즈 없이 문장 단위로 분할된 데이터셋을 사용하여 디노이징 사전 학습한 모델을 통해 문장 단위 분할의 효과를 검증하고자 했고, 디노이징 사전 학습하지 않은 기존 모델보다 성능이 향상되는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 둘 중 하나의 노이즈만을 사용하여 디노이징 사전 학습한 두 모델의 성능이 큰 차이를 보이지 않는 것을 통해 인공적인 무작위 편집거리 노이즈만을 사용한 모델이 언어학적 지식이 필요한 G2P 노이즈만을 사용한 모델에 필적하는 성능을 보일 수 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Vocabulary Recognition Retrieval Optimized System using MLHF Model (MLHF 모델을 적용한 어휘 인식 탐색 최적화 시스템)

  • Vocabulary recognition system of Mobile terminal is executed statistical method for vocabulary recognition and used statistical grammar recognition system using N-gram. If limit arithmetic processing capacity in memory of vocabulary to grow then vocabulary recognition algorithm complicated and need a large scale search space and many processing time on account of impossible to process. This study suggest vocabulary recognition optimize using MLHF System. MLHF separate acoustic search and lexical search system using FLaVoR. Acoustic search feature vector of speech signal extract using HMM, lexical search recognition execution using Levenshtein distance algorithm. System performance as a result of represent vocabulary dependence recognition rate of 98.63%, vocabulary independence recognition rate of 97.91%, represent recognition speed of 1.61 second.
