Health Status of Married Immigrant Women in Busan (부산지역 결혼이주여성의 건강관련 실태)

  • Purpose: By focusing on immigrant women's problems and considering human rights, resettlement plans and marital-life adaptation, health status is often overlooked. It was examined in this study. Method: The participants were 110 immigrant women who lived in Busan. Data were collected from September to November 2007 using a questionnaire. Results: One of five of the women had been hospitalized for a delivery, about 25% were pregnant, and most (80.9 %) have never had a pap-smear test. The average score for anxiety was 3.0 (${\pm}2.50$) and for depression 2.9 (${\pm}2.71$). Most were in the normal range for blood pressure, body mass index(BMI), blood sugar and urine test. There was a significant difference in level of anxiety according to education (F=3.42, p=.020) and in level of depression according to age (F=4.05, p=.020), number of children(t=-.444, p=.009), financial status (F=3.75, p=.027) and satisfaction with life (F=6.38, p=.002). There were significant differences in BMI according to age (F=7.73, p=.001), native nation (F=18.38, p=.000), period of stay in Korea (F=3.11, p=.049), education (F=3.82, p=.012), number of children (t=-4.26, p=.040). Conclusion: Although the health status of the immigrant women was good, procreative care protocols should be developed to support immigrant women who are pregnant.

A Study of Spousal Support, the Demand for Health Education, and Quality of Life for Married Female Immigrants (국제결혼 이주여성의 배우자 지지, 건강교육 요구와 삶의 질)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand spousal support, demand for health education, and quality of life for married female immigrants. Methods: A total of 120 subjects with adequate communication skills participated in this study from March 1, 2006 until January 30, 2007. Participants were female visitors at the Immigrant Consultation Center in "M City", "Y County" and "M County" in South Jeolla Province. The questionnaire used in this study consisted of a total of 42 items. Data were analyzed using SPSS/win 10.2 to describe subjects' characteristics by frequency, and descriptive statistics, and to test group differences by t-test and ANOVA. Results: The highest demand for health education was exercise, and followed by stress management and diet. The level of spousal support for subjects was below average, and the level of quality of life was above the medium. The most difficult thing in their life was the difficulty in language. There was a significant difference in quality of life by level of education, level of life satisfaction, number of childbirths, and age. There was also a significant difference in spousal support by level of life satisfaction. Conclusion: There is a need for a multidimensional strategy to improve the quality of life and spousal support for immigrant females in international marriages.

Meta-analysis about the Effectiveness of Intervention Programs for Married Immigrant Women (결혼이주여성에게 적용한 중재 프로그램의 효과성에 대한 메타분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effect size of intervention programs for married immigrant women as well as to suggest the basic data for health care practices for married migrant women. Methods: Meta-analysis was conducted with 27 articles from domestic Korea master's and doctorate degree dissertations and Korea academic journals from 2007 to 2014. Results: Overall average effect size was 1.17 and 'parental education' of Intervention Variables was the biggest effect size. Intervention Variables were also identified to be the most desirable in cases when total sessions were applied with 10-18 sessions, 1 session per week, 90-120 minutes per session activity time and with less than 10 subjects in group size. Regarding effect variables, psychological variable group was identified to show the biggest effect size and in sub-variables, self-efficacy was identified to show the biggest effect size. Conclusion: If intervention programs for married immigrant women is expanded and conducted based on the results of this study, the program would have significant affect psychological, social and physical health of the married migrant women who currently occupy the important status in our society.

Effects of an Educational Program of Pregnancy and Delivery on Pregnancy related Knowledge, Newborn Care Knowledge, and Postpartum Care Self-efficacy of Marriage Immigrant Women (결혼이주여성을 위한 임신/분만관리 교육프로그램이 임신관련지식, 신생아 양육지식 및 산후관리 자기효능감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of an educational program on pregnancy and delivery including pregnancy related knowledge, newborn care knowledge, and postpartum care self-efficacy for married immigrant women. Methods: A nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. The educational program was developed by though an educational need assessment of married immigrant women and an expert opinion. The program was provided for 3 weeks, once a week for two hours. The data were analyzed with SPSS program using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, $X^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test. Results: The program significantly improved pregnancy related knowledge, newborn care knowledge, and postpartum care self-efficacy for the married immigrant women who participated in the program compared to the women who did not. Conclusion: The results indicate that the educational program has an affirmative effect on pregnancy related knowledge, knowledge of newborn care, and postpartum care self-efficacy in these women. It is suggested, therefore, that the educational program be used to every married immigrant woman at the public health centers or delivery clinics help them to adjust to the childbearing and childrearing experience and this will ultimately enhance the quality of family life of married immigrant women in Korea.

A Study on Educational Needs in Married Immigrant Women Perceived by Their Home Visiting Educator (방문교육지도사가 인지하는 여성 결혼이민자의 교육요구)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the educational needs of married immigrant women perceived by their home visiting educator. Methods: Data were collected using in-depth interviews and structured questionnaires during July 1st to 28th, 2009. 5 HVEs participated in focus group interview, and 27 HVEs in the questionnaire survey. Data were analyzed by content analysis and descriptive statistics using SPSS/WIN program. Results: Educational needs of Married Immigrant Women were conjugal and family relationship, child rearing and child health care, health management, sex education, and self-identification. There is no proper teaching materials about child rearing for HVEs. The educational needs of HVEs were physical and cognitive characteristics of child development, developmental screening skill and play according to the each developmental stages of the multi-cultural families. Conclusion: Family relationship, child rearing and child health care, must be stressed in educational program for Married Immigrant Women. To maximize the effectiveness of support for multi-cultural families, it must be developed a systematic educational program and teaching materials according to family developmental stages.

Child Safety Injury Experiences, Prevention Behaviors and Educational Needs among Immigrant Vietnamese Women on Jeju Island (제주특별자치도 거주 베트남 결혼 이주민 여성의 자녀 안전사고 경험과 안전사고 예방행동 및 교육요구)

  • Purpose: Study purpose was to describe the child safety injury experiences, injury prevention behaviors and educational needs of immigrant Vietnamese women on Jeju Island, and to explore associations among those factors. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted using structured questionnaires to collect data from immigrant Vietnamese women who visited a multicultural centers on Jeju Island from January to April, 2017. Results: Data from 60 women were analyzed. They were $28.2{\pm}5.5$ years old, had resided in Korea for $40.6{\pm}31.1$ months, and had $1.5{\pm}0.6$ children on average. In total, 51.7% had previous injury prevention education, 68.2% had experienced child safety injuries, and 95.0% wanted to receive education on how to prevent child safety injuries. The mean total score of child injury prevention behaviors was $27.33{\pm}17.79$, and that variable was associated with a longer duration of formal education (t=2.41, p=.021) and with women's experiences of child safety injury (t=5.97, p<.001). Conclusion: Immigrant Vietnamese women experienced a higher frequency of child safety injuries and needed educational opportunities to prevent these injuries. Further research is necessary to develop the essential content and effective methods for education on child safety injury prevention among this unique multicultural population.

Effects of a Customized Birth Control Program for Married Immigrant Postpartum Mothers (결혼 이민자 산모를 위한 산후 맞춤형 출산조절 프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a customized birth control program and identify its effects on attitude, subjective norm, behavioral control, intention, and behavior of contraception among immigrant postpartum mothers. Methods: In this experimental study, Vietnamese, Filipino or Cambodian married immigrant postpartum mothers were recruited. They were assigned to the experiment group (n=21) or control group (n=21). The customized birth control program was provided to the experimental group for 4 weeks. Results: The experimental group showed a significant increase in the score of attitude, subjective norm, behavioral control, intention, and behavior of contraception. Conclusion: Findings in this study indicate that the customized postpartum birth control program, a systematic and integrative intervention program composed of customized health education, counseling and telephone monitoring, is able to provide effective planning for postpartum health promotion and birth control behavior practice in married immigrant women.

Factors Influencing Quality of Life in Married Immigrant Women in Korea (결혼 이주 여성의 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing quality of life of married immigrant women in Korea. Methods: The participants included 508 married immigrant women who met the eligibility criteria and agreed to participate in the study. Participants were evaluated for subjective assessment of married immigrant-related constructs using a self-report questionnaire, for self-esteem, self-efficacy, and quality of life (QOL). The analysis was done using SPSS for Windows, version 10.1, and included stepwise regression. Results: The major findings were as follows; 1) There were significant relationships between marital satisfaction (r=.39, $p$=.001), violence by the husband during the couple's arguments (r=-.24, $p$<.001), satisfaction with life in Korea (r=.39, $p$<.001), self-esteem (r=.16, $p$<.001), self-efficacy (r=.51, $p$<.001) and quality of life. 2) Marital satisfaction, self-efficacy, education level and satisfaction life with in Korea were significant factors, which explained 53% of the variance in quality of life (F=43.97, $p$<.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that a powerful predictor of QOL for married immigrant women was self-efficacy. Conclusion: Developing nursing interventions to enhance self-efficacy toward improvement of QOL among married immigrant women is recommended.

A Study on Improvement of Marital Relationship Program for Immigrant Women's Husbands (결혼이민자 남편의 부부관계향상 프로그램 효과성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and evaulate improvement of marital relationship for immigrant women's husbands. They who play important role have much more resources than wifes in Korean society and establish a happier home through trying to adapt marital relationship. It needs to escape focusing on only immigrant education and program and have to extend to immigrants' family members including husband. The program procedure was implemented for 14 immigrant women's husbands every Friday for 2 hours from Feb, 2007 to Mar, 2007. To evaluating effects of program the pre test and post test was analyzed. The program was operated by researcher, center worker and volunteer who have much practiticing experiences about immigrants. The program of sessions is perception of intermarriage, understanding of wife's country culture, open communication, conflict resolution and child rearing attitude. As the results of the analysis, there were significant differences of the increases in the area of perception of intermarriage, open communication and child rearing attitude. Finally, this study suggests that understanding of wife's country culture and conflict resolution of the program be modified by future social work practitioners and researchers in order to make the program more effective.

Effects of Group Piano Playing on International Marriage Immigrant Women's Self-Efficacy; A Case Study (국제결혼 이주여성의 자기효능감 증진을 위한 집단 피아노 연주 활동 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the group piano playing program, which was a part of psycho-emotional support program, on international marriage immigrant women's self-efficacy. For this case study, five international marriage immigrant women from "N Multi-culture Supporting Agency" were agreed to participate in the study. The group piano playing program was implemented for ten sessions. Each session took place once a week for ten weeks. In order to examine the effects of self-efficacy on the participants, both quantitative and qualitative methods were used as a mixed methods research design. As a result, the participants' self-efficacy average score was statistically significant (p< .05). Also, qualitative analysis of participants' verbal and behavioral response showed positive changes in their level of self-efficacy. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the group piano playing can facilitate as an effective intervention to promote the self-efficacy on international marriage immigrant women.
