Purpose : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 (rhBMP-7) injected on the rate of new-bone formation for distraction osteogenesis on dogs. Materials & Methods : Twelve adult dogs were randomly selected into two groups of six dogs on each. Unilateral osteotomies were performed on the body of the mandible and an intraoral distractor was mounted to the mandible on dogs. One group was treated with injection of rhBMP-7 and the other group served as the control. RhBMP-7 was administered on the day of surgery by single injection into the medullary bone at the osteotomy gap. Distraction was performed five days after osteotomy as a rate of 0.5 mm twice per day for 10 days. The animals were then sacrificed at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after completion of the distraction. Two dogs in each group, totaling four dogs, were killed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks after completion of distraction, respectively. The lengthened mandibles were harvested and processed for radiographic and histological examinations. In addition, immunohistochemical examination using osteocalcin expression was studied. Results : Radiographs showed accelerated regenerate ossification with maturation of new bone in the rhBMP-7 group comparing with the control group at the 4 weeks of the consolidation. There was no significant difference in the radiographic findings at the 2 weeks and 8 weeks of the consolidation period. Histological findings demonstrated increased bone healing pattern in the rhBMP-7-treated group during all observation period. The expression of osteocalcin immunoreactivity was hardly detected in the normal mandible of dog, but the expression was detected in all experimental rhBMP-7 treated specimens. There were also significant increasing in number of positive immunostaining cells and staining intensity of osteocalcin expression in the rhBMP-7 treated group compared with those of the control group on 2-weeks and 4-weeks. There was a significant decreasing in staining intenstiy of all both two groups on 8 weeks of consolidation period, but significant differences of immunostaining was not seen in two groups. Conclusions : A single injection of rhBMP-7 at the time of osteotomy may stimulate the rate of regenerate ossification and increase callus maturation during distraction osteogenesis. In addition, it may shorten the distraction osteogenesis procedure and decrease the prevalence of complications associated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

To investigate the effects of trypsin inhibitors, aprotinin and urinary trypsin inhibitor (UTI), on the cute pancreatitis, this study was carried out in dogs of acute pancreatitis induced by oleic acid (0.28 mg/kg). Administration with aprotinin and UTI seemed to have a therapeutic effect on the clinical sign, ultrasonographic finding, histopathologic finding. But in amylase and lipase activity, there were no significant differences among three groups.

Pulmonary bullae were diagnosed in 2 dogs with respiratory distress at Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University. Radiographically, thin-walled, fluid-gas leveled bullae in standing lateral positioning and moderately thick-walled bullae in lateral positioning were identified in case 1 and 2, respectively.

Two Jindo dogs which show clinical signs of anorexia, weakness and exercise intolerance, were referred, and diagnosed as dirofilariasis by hematology, blood chemistry and ultrasonography. In hematology and blood chemistry, the presence of microfilariae in the blood, anemia, leukocytosis, hemoglobinuria and jaundice were revealed. In ultrasonography, heartworms were found in the right ventricle artery and pulmonary artery as structures of hyperechoic dots or streaks. In autopsy, forty odd and fifty odd of heartworms at dog 1 and dog 2, were ascertained respectively in the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.

In dogs, renal denervation did not affect the diuretic action accompanied with renal hemodynamic chanties and inhibition of electrolytes reabsorption rates in renal tubules by methoxyverapamil infused into the vein or into a renal artery, while renal denervation blocked the antidiuretic action due to the decreased free water and osmolar clearances along with the reduced sodium amounts excreted in urine by methoxyverpamil infused into the carotid artery. These experimental results suggest that methoxyverapamil may cause diuresis by direct action in kidney but the antidiuretic action through central function mediated by renal nerves.

Dilated cardiomyopathy in two dogs showing dyspnea was diagnosed at veterinary teaching hospital. In radiographs, cardiomegaly, pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, ascites, and hepatomegaly were seen at case 1. ‘Reversed D’ shape due to right heart enlargement was shown at case 2. In echocardiography, dilatation of chambers was predominant in case 1 and 2. Arrythmia was complicated in case 2.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture at some acupoint combinations on the cardiovascular system, especially on blood pressure. Electroacupuncture at acupoint combinations of CV2O(+)/GV-16(-),4(+)/GV16(-), KI1(+)/GV20(-), and HT9(+)/GV16(-) did not changed heart rates and blood pressure, but stimulation of HT1(+)/HT7(-) Increased systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure significantly in dogs anesthetized with tiletamine/zolazepam.

Twenty-nine dogs with chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) were treated by topical administration of a petrolatum based 2% cyclosporine ointment twice daily. Causes and durations of KCS varied. Tear production increased in 25 of 32 eyes and clinical improvement in corneal health was noticed in 35 of 47 eyes. No serious adverse reactions were observed and only mild irritation was noticed by the owners immediately after the application of the ointment in some cases .

In previous studies, high fever, inappentence, increased respiratory rate, muscle tremors, anemia, jaundice, loss of weight hemoglobinenuria and hemoglobinuria were found in dogs infected intraerythrocytic protzoan parasites of the gennus Babesia. These changes were mainly caused by the intravascular hemolysis. In this study, a Pit Bull Terrier, which was infected by babesia, was investigated clinical signs and patterms of blood. The findings from this study indicated that dog with severs clinical signs shown erythropenia, lymphocytophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and eosinpenia. Furthermore, it presenter low level of hemglobin and hematocrit. However MCV, MCH and MCHC did not decreased as compare to normal dogs.
