A Study on the Growth Characteristics and Productivity of Different Corn Cultivars at Different Environmental Locations in South Korea

  • It is widely known that forage corn is one of the most important crops in the production of silage and green chops during the summer months. In this study, the characteristics and the productivity of Kwangpyeongok, AGR 41, and Nero IT corn cultivars were evaluated in the regions of Jeju and Cheonan, Korea between 2021 and 2022. In each year, different corn cultivars were sown in different parts of the country on April 7 in Jeju and May 3 in Cheonan. The yield of three cultivars, Kwangpyeongok, AGR 41, and Nero IT were measured at the yellow-ripening stage, including the leaves and stems (Stover) and corn grain. Kwangpyeongok stover and total dry matter (DM) yields were slightly higher in Cheonan than in Jeju over the past two years. The quantity of corn cultivated in all cultivated areas was similar. The average yield of AGR 41, corn quantity and total DM were slightly higher in Jeju than in Cheonan. In terms of stover yield, and total dry matter content of the Nero IT cultivar cultivated in Jeju had a slightly higher yield than the cultivar cultivated in Cheonan. Based on this study, all cultivars can show some variations but not too much in terms of growth productivity and distinct characteristics depending on their location. Overall, AGR 41, and Nero IT cultivars in Jeju exhibit slightly higher levels of productivity than the same cultivars in Cheonan.

Effects of corn gluten hydrolyzates, branched chain amino acids, and leucine on body weight reduction in obese rats induced by a high fat diet

  • In this study, we compared corn gluten hydrolyzates, BCAAs, and leucine for their effects on body weight reduction in high fat-induced obese rats in order to determine the major active components in the corn gluten hydrolyzates. After obesity was induced for 13 weeks with high fat diet, the overweight-induced SD rats (n = 64) were stratified according to body weight, randomly blocked into eight treatments, and raised for 8 weeks. Four groups were changed to a normal diet and the other groups remained on the high fat diet. Each of the groups within both diets was fed either casein, corn gluten hydrolyzates, leucine, or branched chain amino acids, respectively. Daily food intake, body weight gain, and food efficiency ratio were significantly lower in the corn gluten hydrolyzate groups compared to the other groups, regardless of the high fat diet or normal fat diet. The rats fed the corn gluten hydrolyzates diet had the lowest perirenal fat pad weights whereas muscle weight was significantly increased in the corn gluten hydrolyzates groups. Plasma triglyceride, hepatic total lipid, and total cholesterol contents were significantly reduced in the corn gluten hydrolyzates groups. Other lipid profile measurements were not significantly changed. Plasma triglyceride and hepatic total lipid were also significantly reduced in the BCAA and leucine groups. Leptin levels were significantly lower and adiponectin was significantly higher in the corn gluten hydrolyzates groups. Fasting blood glucose, insulin, C-peptide, and HOMA-IR levels were also significantly reduced in the corn gluten hydrozylates groups, regardless of fat level.

수분주입량에 따른 압출성형 옥수수 섬유질의 물리화학적 특성 (Effects of Feed Moisture on the Physicochemical Properties of Extruded Corn Fibers)

  • 본 연구는 옥수수 섬유질을 수분주입량의 변화에 따라 압출성형 옥수수 섬유질과 탈전분 압출성형 옥수수 섬유질의 물리화학적 특성 변화를 측정하였다. 원료의 수분주입량은 30, 40, 50%로 조절하였으며 스크루 회전속도와 사출구 온도는 각각 200 rpm, $140^{\circ}C$로 고정시켜 압출성형 하였다. 일반성분 함량은 원료에 비해 감소하였으며, 수분주입량이 30%일 때 옥수수 섬유질과 탈전분 옥수수 섬유질의 불용성 식이섬유 함량은 감소하고 수용성 식이섬유 함량은 증가하였다. 압출성형 옥수수 섬유질의 비기계적 에너지, 직경팽화율, 밀도, 파괴력, 탄성계수는 수분함량이 증가할수록 감소하였고, 비길이는 증가하였다. 압출성형 옥수수 섬유질의 수분흡착지수와 환원당은 수분주입량이 증가할수록 변화가 없었으며 수분용해지수는 감소하였다. 반면에 탈전분 옥수수 섬유질의 수분흡착지수는 감소하고 수분용해지수와 환원당은 증가하였다. 수분주입량 30%일 때 유용성분의 추출이 미량 증가하는 것으로 보아 압출성형공정의 적용하여 섬유질에 포함된 유용성분의 추출이 용이할 것으로 생각된다.

Capric acid와 conjugated linoleic acid를 함유한 재구성 지질의 합성 및 특성연구 (Production of Structured Lipid Containing Capric and Conjugated Linoleic Acids and Studies of Physicochemical Characteristics)

  • 1-L stirred-batch type reactor에서 기질들의 몰 비율을 1:2:2(corn oil:capric acid:CLA)하고 RM IM lipase을 사용하여 재구성 지질을 합성하였다. 합성된 재구성 지질은 총 capric acid 와 CLA을 각각 13.3 mol%와 8.9 mol% 함유하였다. 기능성 지방산은 주로 sn-1,3 position에 분포하였고, sn-2 position에는 linoleic acid가 대부분이었다. 재구성 지질의 요오드가와 비누화가는 68과 202이었고, 이는 재구성 지질에 함유된 capric acid 때문이었다. 반응 후 재구성 지질의 총 tocopherol 함량은 약 39% 감소하였다. 색도분석결과, 재구성 지질과 옥배유 서로간에 백색도$(L^*)$와 적색도$(a^*)$에서는 유의적 차이가 없었으나, 황색도$(b^*)$에서는 재구성 지질이 옥배유보다 yellowness를 보이며 유의적 차이를 보였다(p<0.05). RP-HPLC 분석결과 재구성 지질에서 capric acid를 함유하고 있는 TAG형태의 PN은 26-44로 전체의 약 34.2 area% 차지함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 옥배유가 $-56.77^{\circ}C$에서 주된 crystallization peak 정점을 보인 반면에, 재구성 지질은 $-46.2^{\circ}C$에서 주된 peak 정점을 나타내었다.

옥수수전분 현탁액의 알칼리 호화 (Alkali Gelatinization of Corn Starch Suspension)

  • 옥수수전분의 알칼리호화는 NaOH 첨가에 의하여 지수적으로 증가하였으며, 호화도가 급격히 증가하기 시작하는 구간을 알칼리호화 개시점으로 추정하였다. 10%(w/w) 옥수수 전분 현탁액의 $40^{\circ}C$에서 호화개시점은 24.1 meq NaOH/g starch인 반면에 $60^{\circ}C$에서는 9.8 meq NaOH/g starch이었다. 또한 옥수수전분 현탁액의 농도를 40%로 증가시킨 경우 $40^{\circ}C$에서 9.5 meq NaOH/g starch에서 호화가 개시되었다. 이와 같은 결과로부터 전분의 알칼리호화 개시농도가 전분 현탁액의 농도와 온도에 반비례하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Lard와 Corn oil이 Ethanol로 처리한 Mouse의 혈청 총 Cholesterol함량 및 간 Thiobarbituric acid치에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Lard and Corn oil on Serum total Cholesterol Content and Liver Thiobarbituric acid Value in Mice treated with Ethanol)

  • The study carried out to clarify the effects of lard and corn oil on serum total cholesterol content and liver thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value in ethanol (Et-OH) fed mice. Results obtained from the present study were a follows: 1. serum total cholesterol content was considerably increased by 25% Et-OH administration in mice. In case of 25% Et-OH plus Lard group and Lard group both group were also increased significantly to compare with normal value of mice but 25% Et-OH plus lard group was shown very higher value rather than that of Lard group and Lard group was found similar tendency to compare with the 25% Et-OH plus saline group except to after the 1 day. 2. serum total cholestrol content of 25% Et-OH plus Corn oil group and corn oil group were also increased significantly to compare with normal value, but the 25% Et-Oh plus Corn oil group slightly higher level than that of Corn oil group except to after the 3 days. 3. Lard group was also very similar tendency to compare with the corn oil group except to the 3 days. 4. liver TBA value was increased by 25% Et-OH fed mice. 25% Et-OH plus Lard group and Lard group were also increased significantly to compare with liver TBA value in normal mice, but 25% Et-OH plus Lard group was found higher value rather than that of lard group and 25% Et-OH group (Control). Lard group was similar to that of Control group except to after the 1 day. And 25% Et-OH plus Corn oil group was considerably increased rather than that of Control group, and liver TBA value of the above group was similar to that of 25% Et-OH plus Lard group except to after the 3 days. Corn oil group was shown lower value than that of lard group, but it was no significant.

배합사료를 혼합한 옥수수-계분 silage의 품질과 사료가치 (Quality and Feed Value of Ensiled Whole Crop Corn with Cage Layer Excreta and Concentrate)

  • This study was carried out to enhance the nutritional value of whole crop corn silage and the utilization of animal waste as a ruminant feedstuffs. Whole crop corn were ensiled with cage layer excreta and concentrate. Treatments included whole crop corn silage (control), 10% cage layer excreta and concentrate-corn silage (CES lo), 20% cage layer excreta and 10% concentrate-corn silage (CES 20) and 30% cage layer excreta and 10% concentrate-corn silage (CES 30). The characteristics of silage fermentation was evaluated. Digestibility and palatability of the silage were observed through the feeding trial with four male Corridale sheep. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Cage layer excreta-corn silage showed higher contents of crude protein and crude ash than control silage, while crude fibre content was significantlv lower than that of control silage (P(.01). 2. Total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen content of the cage layer excreta-corn silage was significantly (P< .01) higher than that of control, but CES 10 silage was good in quality. 3. Lactic acid content of CES 10 silage was the highest, but that of CES 20 and CES 30 silage was lower than that of control. CES 20 and CES 30 silage was lower lactic acid content and higher pH than control. Therefore Flieg's score was wrose than that of control silage. 4. The numbers of total bacteria and lactic fermentation bacteria were estimated lo7-10' and 10"1OH, respectively, and there were no significant differences among treatments. Coliform numbers were not detected with CES 10 silage while were detected lo3 per gram in CES 30 silage. 5. Digestibility of crude protein, crude fibre and ADF was improved significantly in the animals fed the cage layer excreta-corn silage compared with animals fed the control silage. DCP and TDN were the highest in the CES 10 silage. 6. The intake of daily nitrogen and dry matter per metabolic body weight was the highest in animals fed the CES 10 silage.lage.

Comparisons of Pericarp Thickness And Sugar Content on New Waxy Corn Hybrids

  • For waxy corn hybrid development, 23 waxy corn hybrids were planted and surveyed in both pericarp thickness and sugar content. Pericarp thickness showed average 50 to $49{\mu}m$ in field and greenhouse. Results like these advanced than previous other hybrids. Also, sugar content in developed waxy corn evaluated as 13.6 to 15.3 brix. Here, we concluded that edible quality of waxy corn depended on combing of two factors. Especially, CNU11H8 hybrid at field and CNU11H-38 at greenhouse were good in both factors. Accordingly, these hybrids will be planted in next time for productivity and area adaptation.

옥수수의 수확시기가 사초의 생산성과 품질에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Different Harvest Dates on Dry Matter Yield and Forage Quality of Corn ( Zea mays L. ))

  • The corn is one of the most important forage crop in Korea. The harvest time for silage affects dry matter (DM) yield and silage quality. This study was carried out to determine the effect of harvest time on the DM yield and nutritive value of corn forage at the Experimental Livestock Farm, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University, Suweon in 1991. Forage DM yield and DM content of corn forage significantly increased mainly due to increase of ear. And also the ear to total DM ratio increased from 30% to 55% as the harvest was delayed. Chemical composition of the corn forage was improved by reduction in crude fihr, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber as the harvest was delayed. This results indicated that the harvest time of corn forage plays an important role to determine DM yield and DM contents for silage materials.

담근먹이 옥수수의 잎집무늬마름병 발생에 관한 연구 I. 생육시기 및 재배환경과 잎집무늬 마름병 발생 (Studies on the Occurrence of Corn Sheath Blight Caused by Rhizoctonia solsni I. Influence of growth season and cultural environment on the occurrence of sheath blight disease.)

  • The investigation was carried out to identify the main pathogen infected with sheath blight in corn plant during 1986-1987. The main fungi of sheath blight isolated from corn plant was identified as Rhizoctonia sobni. Sheath blight in corn plant was first found in early July and infected extremely from late July to end August. Severe sheath blight disease was observed in Gyeongido (Yeoju and Suweon) and Jeonnam (Kwangju) area. The rate of attack was associatied with management and cultural environments of corn plant. Dense planting increased sheath blight, but application of cattle compost reduced the rate of infection. A positive correlation was found between infection rate of shealth blight and concentration of soluble carbohydrate in corn plant (r=0.96). The varieties of Jinjuok, Suweon 83, Suweon 87, Suweon 89, P.3055, P.3160, DK689 and XCG 51 showed remarkable tolerance to sheath blight disease.
