  • This study was experimented to obtain the basic information on the changeable aspect and improvement of soil fertility in newly-reclaimed sloped land. Silage corn was cultivated under the six different treatments for 4 years. The relation between the amount or ratio of annual changes of soil physico-chemical properties and yield of silage corn were analyzed. Soil bulk density was decreased in 3rd year at topsoil, but that decreased in 4th year at subsoil. Soil organic matter also decreased in 2nd year at topsoil, and decreased continuously at subsoil. Bulk density and hardness of soil depths showed significant negative simple correlation with dry matter yield and cation exchange capacity showed positive. Correlation coefficient of chemical properties with dry matter yield were low. The range of annual changes of moisture percent, hardness and organic matter were wider than the other properties. The significantly different of physical properties were higher than the chemical properties, and those of topsoil were higher than subsoil. According to multiple regression between yield and physico-chemical properties of subsoil, bulk density and cation exchange capacity were in the greatest contribution at the variations, but bulk density was greatest at the ratios.

  • Porous barium-strontium titanate ceramics were fabricated by adding corn- or potato-starch (are referred to as starch). The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and electrical properties of the porous ceramics was investigated. The room-temperature electrical resistivity of the barium-strontium titanate ceramics decreased with sintering temperature. The porosity and pore size were decreased and the grain size was increased with increasing the sintering temperature. The porosity and grain size of the barium-strontium titanate ceramics with corn-starch sintered at 1300 and 1450$^{\circ}C$ were 28.5, 22.6% and 3.2, 6.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. The average pore sizes of the barium-strontium titanate ceramics with corn-starch sintered at 1300, 1400 and 1450$^{\circ}C$ were 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. The decrease in the room-temperature resistivity with increasing sintering temperature is attributed mainly due to the increase of grain size and the decrease of the electrical barrier height of grain boundaries as well as the partial decrease of porosity.

  • The objective of this experiment was to determine the apparent (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) in five feed ingredients for male broiler chickens (Ross 308). The test feed ingredients consisted of corn, wheat, soybean meal (SBM), canola meal (CM), and corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). The birds were fed a standard starter diet for the first 19 d. On day 19, nine hundred sixty birds were assigned to six dietary treatments with eight replicate cages (20 birds/cage) in a randomized complete block design. All experimental diets contained chromic oxide (0.5% in the diet) as an indigestible index. The diets were offered ad libitum for 4 d. At the end of the experiment, all birds were euthanized and ileal digesta samples were collected immediately. The indispensable AA with the least AID and SID were Thr for all the ingredients used in the present study, except for DDGS, in which Lys had the lowest digestibility. For indispensable AA, the AID and SID of Leu, Phe, Arg, and Met were the greatest in corn, DDGS, wheat, SBM, and CM, respectively. The results from the present study showed that there are variations in both the AID and SID of CP and AA among feed ingredients.

  • AOM and lamp tests were carried out with soybean, corn, palm oil and beef tallow without the addition of antioxidant. The evaluation of rancidity for the stability was determined by changes of peroxide value and acid value, and the correlation between the stability and the composition of fats and oils was examined. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In the AOM test, POV began to rise in the order of corn oil, soybean oil, beef tallow and palm oil. However, the time required to reach POV 100 in beef tallow was faster than other fats and oils. It was found that there was a good correlation between POV and content of tocophrol. 2. In the lamp test by light of main wavelength 253.7nm, beef tallow was stabler than soybean and corn oil. It was because the absorption of light into beef tallow was much smaller than others, since beef tallow was fats. Palm oil was very stable in all the samples during AOM and lamp test.

  • In order to investigate polar lipid ingredients and fat쇼 acid compositions in corn embryo, lipids were extracted with n-hexane (HX), pet. ether (PE), chloroform-methanol (2:1, v/v) (CM), dichoromethane-methanol (2:1, v/v DM) and hexane-diethyl ether (5:1, v/v HD). Of the glycolipid in polar lipids were separated by thin layer chormatogarphy (TLC), monoglycosyl diacyglycerol was most efficient with CM, HD, and monoglycosy sterol and monoglycosyl ceramide were similar to five solvents, but HX, PE and DM, HD were somewhat superior, respectively. Of the phospholipid, phosphatidyl inositol was most efficient with CM, DM, and phosphatidyl choline was similar to five solvents as well. Phosphatidyl serine was superior PE, HD, CM to HX, and phosphatidyl ethanolamine was inferior CM to HX. The major fatty acid in the glycolipid was linoleic acid, and it was most efficient with CM the same as plamitic acid, but oleic acid was superior in using HX, PE. The major fatty acids in the phospholipid were palmitic, heptadecanoic aicds, and they were superior in using HX and PE, respectively. Also oleic acid was most efficient with HX and CM, but HD was somewhat inferior.

  • Onion was extracted by methyl alcohol and some physiological activities and antioxidative effect of the extracts on soybean oil, corn oil, lard and shortening were compared with commercial antioxidants such as $\alpha$-tocopherol and BHT. The electron donating ability was about 70% at concentration above of 30mg/mL. Nitrite scavenging effects of all concentrations diminished at higher pH, while in the case of pH 1.2, it showed a nitrite scavenging effect of more than 80% af concentration above of 30mg/mL. And also, the angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory effect was good above 80%. The soybean oil, corn oil, lard and shortening containing different levels of the onion extract were stored at 6$0^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the antioxidative activity of onion extracts. Peroxide value, acid value and TBA value of each oil were detected. Onion extract was very effective to retard oxidation of soybean oil, corn oil and lard, and especially, the very high antioxidative effect was observed for lard.

  • The levels of aflatoxin (AFT) and ochratoxin (OCT) were assessed at different seasons in raw materials, different feed manufacture processing stages, and animal feeds in feed mills in Korea implementing the hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system. Two hundred samples were collected in all four seasons from five feed mills implementing the HACCP system and examined for AFT and OCT contents. The AFT and OCT levels were analysed by using HPLC method to provide information on raw material and product stage. The AFT content of raw ingredients in the spring season was highest in corn gluten (3.84 ppb) and lowest in corn (1.82 ppb) The AFT content of corn was highest in the winter season (2.17 ppb). The content of OCT in wheat was highest in the winter season. The amounts of AFT and OCT at processing stages were higher than in the raw materials or feed. In particular, AFT content was higher in the transfer stage (3.88 ppb) than in the mixing (2.86 ppb) or filling stages (3.45 ppb) in the summer season. The means of AFT and OCT level in laying hen feed was 3.41 ppb and 1.14 ppb for broiler feed, respectively. The means of AFT and OCT level in and broiler feeds was 3.44 ppb and 1.17 ppb for broiler feed, respectively.

  • Subsurface drainage improves crop productivity in poorly drained soils but may also substantially contribute impairment of surface water quality due to excess leaching losses of nutrients like Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO3-N). This research presents preliminary findings from a 3-years tile depth and spacing study in Illinois state that includes three drain spacings implemented in 2 plots. We found that the plot with the narrower subsurface drainage (Case 1) exported more drainage water compared to the plot with the narrower subsurface drainage system (Case 2). The total drainage water from Case 1 plot showed 57% more compared to Case 2 plot. Whereas we observed that the plot with narrower drain spacing (Case 1) exported only 9% more NO3-N leaching losses compared to the wider plot (Case 2). The average corn yield was observed higher in plot Case 1 compared to Case 2. Especially, we observed about 7% higher corn yield in plot Case 1 compared to Case 2 plot in the relatively dried year (2022). The preliminary findings for this study suggest that subsurface drainage systems can be optimized to reduce nutrient losses while improving the crop productivity.

  • This study was conducted to suggest a sustainable farming practice forresource recycling in vegetable gardens of North Korea. In North Korea, farmers are allowed to own private vegetable gardens less than $100m^2$. However, usage of fertilizers in private vegetable gardens is very limited due to economic sanctions by UN security council. If North and South Korea initiated the cooperative action in the near future, agricultural sector would be the highest priority cooperation area. Considering the current North Korean situation in agriculture, we would like to suggest a method for producing organic fertilizer manure. For raw materials for producing manure, we selected corn byproduct, which is the most abundant material, and rabbits' feces, which are easily obtained from individual private farms in North Korea. As we cannot get corn byproducts and rabbits' feces from North Korea, we prepared samples of corn byproducts and rabbits; feces from many places in South Korea. After statistical analysis of variance, there was no significant difference in the T-N contents of corn byproducts from Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungnam, Chungbuk, Jeollabuk and Gyeongsangnam-dos, which indicates that the fertilizing quality of corn byproducts does not vary significantly in the spatial scale of South. Korea. In this sense, if we use corn samples from Gyeonggi province, they would not be very different from those of North Korean regions. Physicochemical properties of rabbits' feces were different between those eating feed grains and those eating plants only. Hence, we used rabbits' feces of the rabbits from Yeonchun area, which were fed by plants only. Using three different mixing ratios of corn byproducts and rabbits' feces, composting was conducted for 60 days. The mixing ratio of 1:1 produced the manure with % T-N of 1.98% and OM/N ratio of 31.7 after 30 days of composting, which is comparable to the quality of commercial manure.
