As corn starches with different amylose content were heated at different temperature $(100^{\circ}C,\;121^{\circ}C)$ with starch / water ratio (1:3.5, 1:9) and heating-cooling treatment was repeated up to 4 times, the yield of RS(resistant starch) from heated corn starches was investigated by the enzymatic-gravimetric method and the ${\alpha}-amylase$ treatment. Compared to ${\alpha}-amylase$ method, enzymatic-gravimetric method was more effective to hydrolyze the amorphous region of heated corn starch. With increasing the amylose content and the number of heating-cooling treatment, the yield of RS increased, regardless of isolation method. Heated corn starches formed at $121^{\circ}C$ provided higher yield of RS than those formed at $100^{\circ}C$. Higher RS yield was also observed in the case of starch/water ratio (1:3.5) compared to the case of ratio (1:9).
The objectives were to assess the use of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a tool for estimating nutrient compositions of corn kernel, and to apply an NIRS-based indium gallium arsenide array detector to the system for collecting spectra and analyzing calibration equations using equipments designed for field application. Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) was employed to develop calibration equations based on representative data sets. The kennard-stone algorithm was applied to induce a calibration set and a validation set. As a result, the method for structuring a calibration set significantly affected prediction accuracy. The prediction of chemical composition of corn kernel resulted in the following (kennard-stone algorithm: relative) moisture ($R^2=0.82$, RMSEP=0.183), crude protein ($R^2=0.80$, RMSEP=0.142), crude fat ($R^2=0.84$, RMSEP=0.098), crude fiber ($R^2=0.74$, RMSEP=0.098), and crude ash ($R^2=0.81$, RMSEP=0.048). Result of this experiment showed the potential of NIRS to predict the chemical composition of corn kernel.
This study examines the effects of choline deficiency and 2-acetylaminofluorene(2-AAF) on the lipid peroxide values, glucose 6-phosphatase(G6Pase) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in rats fed different dietary fats. Weanling Sprague Dawley male rats fed the diets containing 15% beef tallow or 15% corn oil with vitamin fortification mixture or choline free vitamin mixture for 10 weeks. At 3th and 5th week, 2-AAF was injected twice each week intraperitoneally. Total 2-AAF injection was four times. 2-AAF and choline deficiency increased lipid peroxidation in corn oil groups, so the role of 2-AAF and choline deficiency in lipid peroxidation was more important in corn oil groups than beef tallow groups. G6Pase activities tended to be decreased by 2-AAF in choline deficient groups, and in corn oil groups, the enzyme activities were decreased significantly in all subgroups compaired to beef tallow groups. GST activities were increased by 2-AAF in beef tallow groups and choline deficiency in corn oil groups, and might defence against carcinogen metabolism and lipid peroxidation.
L-Malic acid (L-MA) is widely used in food and non-food products. However, few microorganisms have been able to efficiently produce L-MA from xylose derived from lignocellulosic biomass (LB). The objective of this work is to convert LB into L-MA with the concept of a bioeconomy and environmentally friendly process. The unique trifunctional xylanolytic enzyme, PcAxy43A from Paenibacillus curdlanolyticus B-6, effectively hydrolyzed xylan in untreated LB, especially corn hull to xylose, in one step. Furthermore, the newly isolated, Acetobacter tropicalis strain H1 was able to convert high concentrations of xylose derived from corn hull into L-MA as the main product, which can be easily purified. The strain H1 successfully produced a high L-MA titer of 77.09 g/l, with a yield of 0.77 g/g and a productivity of 0.64 g/l/h from the xylose derived from corn hull. The process presented in this research is an efficient, low-cost and environmentally friendly biological process for the green production of L-MA from LB.
The objective of this study was to quantitatively estimate the level of grazing area damage in outdoor free-range pig production using a Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) with an RGB image sensor. Ten corn field images were captured by a UAV over approximately two weeks, during which gestating sows were allowed to graze freely on the corn field measuring 100 × 50 m2. The images were corrected to a bird's-eye view, and then divided into 32 segments and sequentially inputted into the YOLOv4 detector to detect the corn images according to their condition. The 43 raw training images selected randomly out of 320 segmented images were flipped to create 86 images, and then these images were further augmented by rotating them in 5-degree increments to create a total of 6,192 images. The increased 6,192 images are further augmented by applying three random color transformations to each image, resulting in 24,768 datasets. The occupancy rate of corn in the field was estimated efficiently using You Only Look Once (YOLO). As of the first day of observation (day 2), it was evident that almost all the corn had disappeared by the ninth day. When grazing 20 sows in a 50 × 100 m2 cornfield (250 m2/sow), it appears that the animals should be rotated to other grazing areas to protect the cover crop after at least five days. In agricultural technology, most of the research using machine and deep learning is related to the detection of fruits and pests, and research on other application fields is needed. In addition, large-scale image data collected by experts in the field are required as training data to apply deep learning. If the data required for deep learning is insufficient, a large number of data augmentation is required.
Consumption of waxy corn is steadily increasing due to consumer preference for natural food. However, availability of waxy corn is limited because most of them are used for steamed waxy corn. It is therefore important to create new demands of waxy corn using food processing technology. There is little prior research about characteristics of milled kernel in waxy corn. This study examined the physicochemical and cooking properties of milled kernel using nine waxy corn hybrids. Colored hybrids (Heukjinju, Miheukchal, and Eolrukchal1) showed high milling yield and low change of grain length after milling process compared to other hybrids. The total starch content ranged from 62.1 to 68.4% and the gelatinization temperature of starch was lowest in Yeonnong1 ($69.9^{\circ}C$). The breakdown viscosity of Yeonnong1, Miheukchal and Heukjinju was higher than those of tested hybrids, whereas setback viscosity of those hybrids was lower. In cooking properties of milled waxy corn, water absorption and volume expansion rate were high in Yeonnong2 (84.9, 219.3%), Miheukchal (85.9, 211.4%), and Heukjinju (80.9, 203.7%). In the sensory test, the overall preference was significantly higher in Heukjinju and Miheukchal. Thus, Heukjinju, Yeonnong2, and Miheukchal showed good scores in milling yield, cooking properties, and the preference of sensory test. These results will provide fundamental information to extend milled waxy corns usage.

Dry matter productivity at silage stage of two corn hybrids varying resistance to rice blackstreaked dwarf virus(RBSDV) and two sorghum hybrids varying growth duration was evaluated at six planting dates (Apr. 1, Apr. 15, Apr. 29, May 13, May 27, and June 10) in Kyongsan where RBSDV is prevalent.Corn was harvested 38-40 days after silking. For sorghum 1st-cut was made 19-22 days after heading and some regrowth (2nd-cut) on October 13. 1. Percent stand of both corn hybrids was over 91% at all planting dates, but that of sorghum ranged 37.2-80.3% depending on hybrids and planting dates. 2. The number of days from planting to emergence decreased as planting date delayed in both crops. The number of days from emergence to silking of both corn hybrids and a sorghum hybrid(P 956) decreased as planting date delayed, but that of the other sorghum hybrid(P 931) increased significantly after May 13 planting. 3. RBSDV infection rate of corn hybrids was highest at April 1 planting (Kwanganok 24.896, Jinjuok 63.0%) and decreased up to April 29 planting and then increased as planting date delayed. Sorghum was not infected by RBSDV at all. 4. EarfTotal dry matter ratio of corn ranged 30.6-47.9% and that of sorghum 3.1-30.7% depending on hybrids and planting dates. All the hybrids developed grain normally at all planting dates except a sorghum hybrid (P 931) which developed few grains after May 13 planting. 5. Crude (C) protein and C. fat contents were similar among all treatments. C. fiber content of P 931 was higher than that of both corn hybrids and P 956, but nitrogen free extract (NFE) was lower. C. fiber and NFE of both corn hybrids and 1st-cut sorghum were similar among the planting dates, but C. fiber and NFE of 2nd-cut of sorghum decreased and C. protein increased as planting date delayed due to plants were younger. 6. Dry matter (DM) yield of all hybrids decreased as planting date delayed except Jinjuok of which yield was highest at April 29 planting. DM yield of corn was similar to 1st-cut sorghum, but lower than total DM yield of sorghum at April 1 and 15 plantings where regrowth yield was high.
Cultivation of winter cover crops and its soil utilization for summer main crops in slope upland is very important at the respects of diminution of soil erosion and non-point pollution source. The effects of cover crop, hairy vetch as no-tillage or conventional tillage on prevention of soil erosion and reduction of chemical nitrogen fertilization were investigated in the slope upland with whiter clover living mulch (partial tillage) in Suwon for three years and with rye (conventional tillage) in Hongcheon for two years, respectively. In Suwon, amounts of soil lost by rainfall runoff decreased as much as 90% by hairy vetch-no tillage (HV-NT), white clover-partial tillage (WF-PT) together with the decrease of rainfall runoff compared to winter fallow with conventional tillage (WF-CT). In addition, amounts of weed also decreased as much as 80-90% by HV-NT and WF-PT. Corn yield decreased much at the plot of WF-PT mainly due to competition for soil water and nutrients between clover and corn at the early corn growth stage. On the contrary, corn yield increased by HV-NT compared to WF-CT regardless of weed control. In Hongcheon, amounts of soil eroded during winter season before corn seeding were reduced as much as 95% by cultivation of hairy vetch and rye compared to winter fallow. Amount of soil eroded during waxy corn growing season was reduced as much as 98% by HV-NT compared to WF-CT. Also, soil incorporation of hairy vetch and rye as green manure with conventional tillage at corn seeding time could reduce soil erosion as much as 70% compared to no soil cover with conventional tillage. Ear yields of waxy corn were increased 10% higher at hairy vetch green manure (HV-CT) without nitrogen fertilizer, 20% higher at HV-NT with standard nitrogen fertilizer, respectively than WF-CT. But ear yields of waxy corn were decreased by rye green manure (R-CT) and HV-NT at the condition of no nitrogen fertilizer. It was concluded that hairy vetch was better as winter cover crop to reduce both soil erosion and chemical nitrogen fertilizer simultaneously in slope upland than other cover crops.

This research was conducted to investigate the effects of fly ash applications on growth and yield parameters of corn (Zea mays L.), and soil chemical properties. Corn height at silking stage, and height and dry matter ratio at harvesting stage were enhanced by applications of fly ashes derived from bituminous coal and anthracite, respectively. Effects of fly ash treatment on growth parameters of corn were varied with kinds and levels of fly ash application and growth periods, but relatively small without revealing a major negative effect as compared to the control. Yield of corn was increased by applying fly ash of anthracite origin, but other yield components were not influenced negatively by fly ash treatment. Soil total carbon contents, cation exchange capacity, and phosphorus contents of soils sampled after harvest of corn were significantly increased by fly ash treatment, although there were slightly different effects according to kinds and levels of fly ash application. Exchangeable cations of soils were varied within an experimental error range. Phosphorus taken up by corn was enhanced by treating fly ash of the bituminous coal to the soil and there were a positive correlation between phosphorus uptake and soil Phosphorus level. Cation uptake by corn was changed a little, but no significant reduction was observed in cation uptake due to fly ash treatment. It seems to be difficult to figure out the mechanism of fly ash effects on growth and nutrient uptake by corn with one year field experiment, however treatment of fly ash enhanced some parameters of growth and yield, and nutrient uptake by corn without revealing any major negative effects. To determine the value of fly ash as a fertilizer source, continuous researches under various soil and crop conditions were considered to be necessary.
Two trials at different body weights of Hanwoo heifers (average body weight of 143 and 257 kg, respectively) were conducted to determine crude protein requirements for maintenance (CPm). Six Hanwoo heifers in each trial were used in two 3 ${\times}$ 3 Latin square design with three diets containing three levels of CP, 14 days in each period. In trial 1, the diets were based on 2.8 kg fresh wt./day/heifer timothy hay (LCP) with supplements of either 250 g ground corn and 150 g corn gluten meal (MCP) or 500 g ground corn and 300 g corn gluten meal (HCP). In trial 2, the diets were based on 4.8 kg fresh wt./day/heifer timothy hay (LCP) with supplements of either 350 g ground corn and 250 g corn gluten meal (MCP) or 700 g ground corn and 500 g corn gluten meal (HCP). In trial 1, CP intakes were 236.6, 340.1, and 459.8 g/d for LCP, MCP, and HCP, respectively. Crude protein balances were 0.51, 1.87 and 3.20g/$BW^{0.75}$/d for LCP, MCP, and HCP, respectively. In trial 2, CP intakes were 415.2, 606.9 and 793.0g/d for LCP, MCP and HCP, respectively. Crude protein balances were 0.67, 1.03, 2.99 g/$BW^{0.75}$/d for LCP, MCP, and HCP, respectively. The maintenance requirements for CP from the regression equation between CP intake and CP balance were 4.58g/$BW^{0.75}$/d (trial 1) and 5.02 g/$BW^{0.75}$/d (trial 2) and lower than the value (5.56 g/$BW^{0.75}$/d) adopted by Korean Feeding Standards for Hanwoo (2007).
