This paper explores whether there is correlation between consonants' place and duration of adjacent vowels in English and Korean. The results showed that in English the vowels preceding alveolar stops were in general longer than the vowels before bilabial or velar stops. Consonants appeared to have their inherent length due to their place and to exhibit some compensatory effects on the duration of preceding vowels. This effect can be explained in a physiological term that the tongue tip is the organ which might be more agile in articulatory movement than the tongue body for the velars or the lower lip (and the jaw) for the bilabials is and the shorter production time of the alveolars caused the lengthening of the adjacent vowels. However, this physiological account did not hold in the case of Korean, which exhibited less consistent patterns across speakers for the consonants' place and the vowel duration. The segmental duration seemed to be timed quite consistently within a language but the pattern was not universal across languages.
This paper explores to identify the stem-final consonants of p- and t-irregular verbs in Korean within the framework of Government Phonology. Since the advent of Generative Phonology, the phenomenon of irregular verbal conjugation has been of great interest to Korean phonologists both in linear and non-linear approaches. When we examine these analyses, we find that one of the major issues concerns the identities of the stem-final consonants of p- and t-irregular verbs. The proposals concerning this issue vary considerably from one another. In this paper, I put forward a different view from those proposals in that the stem-fmal consonants of p- and tirregular verbs are tensed p' and t' respectively.
Recently, several theories on the digital speech signal processing expanded the communication boundary between human beings and machines drastically. The aim of this study is to collect dialectal speech in Korea on a large scale and to establish a digital speech data base in order to provide the data base for further research on the Korean dialectal and the creation of value-added network. 528 informants across the country participated in this study. Acoustic characteristics of vowels and consonants are analyzed by Power spectrum and Spectrogram of CSL. Test words were made on the picture cards and letter cards which contained each vowel and each consonant in the initial position of words. Plot formants were depicted on a vowel chart and transitions of diphthongs were compared according to dialectal speech. Spectral times, VOT, VD, and TD were measured on a Spectrogram for stop consonants, and fricative frequency, intensity, and lateral formants (LF1, LF2, LF3) for fricative consonants. Nasal formants (NF1, NF2, NF3) were analyzed for different nasalities of nasal consonants. The acoustic characteristics of dialectal speech showed that young generation speakers did not show distinction between close-mid /e/ and open-mid$/\epsilon/$. The diphthongs /we/ and /wj/ showed simple vowels or diphthongs depending to dialect speech. The sibilant sound /s/ showed the aspiration preceded to fricative noise. Lateral /l/ realized variant /r/ in Kyungsang dialectal speech. The duration of nasal consonants in Chungchong dialectal speech were the longest among the dialects.
This paper investigates the phonological processes of consonants in pronounced words in the Seoul Corpus, and compares the frequency distribution of these processes to provide a clearer understanding of conversational Korean to linguists and teachers. To this end, both orthographic and pronounced words were extracted from the transcribed label scripts of the Seoul Corpus. Next, the phonological processes of consonants in the orthographic and pronounced forms were tabulated separately after syllabifying the onsets and codas, and major consonantal processes were examined. First, the results showed that the majority of the orthographic consonants' sounds were pronounced the same way as their pronounced forms. Second, more than three quarters of the onsets were pronounced as the same forms, while approximately half of the codas were pronounced as variants. Third, the majority of different onset and coda symbols were primarily caused by deletions and insertions. Finally, the five phonological process types accounted for only 12.4% of the total possible procedures. Based on these results, this paper concludes that an analysis of phonological processes in spontaneous speech corpora can improve the practical understanding of spoken Korean. Future studies ought to compare the current phonological process data with those of other languages to establish universal patterns in phonological processes.
The Korean diphthong /je/ is realized monophthong /e/ or neutralized /E/ in real speech generally. And diphthong /je/ was changed by preceeding consonants and place of syllable. In case that preceeding consonants exist, /je/ is realized as it is /je/, but in case that preceeding consonants don't exist, /je/ is changed variously. In case that /je/ is in second syllable place, /je/ is realized monophthong /e/ and in case that /je/ is in fist syllable place, /je/ is realized diphthong /je/.
This study examined the perception and production of Korean lax, fortis and aspirated stops in three apraxic patients. All of tile subjects made more production errors than perception errors. This indicates that apraxic patients have problems in phonetic execution rather than phonological representation. Additionally, in both production and perception, there were more errors in non-word-initial consonants than in word-initial consonants. These findings contradict those of the previous studies which report more errors in word-initial consonants. This study also found that, unlike previous studies in the types of errors made, distortion errors were high in both non-word-initial and word-initial consonants in apraxic patients. Generally, VOT of the stops showed significant differences among lax, fortis, and aspirated stops, which indicates that there is a failure not in choosing the appropriate stop but in positioning or motor planning at the articulation stage.
Korean unvoiced phonemes consist of nonstationary parts comparing that the vowels and nasal consonants consist of quasi-stationary part. And some phonemes, which have smae point of articulation but differnt manner of articulation, has similar characteristics, so it makes to be hard to distinguish each other. A new method usin gchanges and characteristics of acoustic properties of these phonemes to improve recognition rate are proposed. And because these changes and cahracteristics evidently occur in continuous speech except some unvoiced consonants are articulated as voiced phoneme in case to be used as an midial between voiced phonemes, this method can be applied easily. The features of the frames extracted to represent each phonemes are used asinputs to the hierarchical neural network. And with these results final decision for phoneme recognition is made thorugh post processing which the new method is applied to. Through the experimental recognition results for 9 unvoiced consonants which belong to bilabial, alveolar, and velar phoneme series, 89.4% recognition rate to distinguish in same phoneme series is obtained, and 85.6% recognition rate is obtained in case of including cistinguishing phoneme series.
The purpose of this study is to investigate two phonological error patterns on coronal feature of children with functional articulation disorders and to compare them with those of general children. We tested 120 children with functional articulation disorders and 100 general children from 2~4 years of age with 'Assessment of Phonology & Articulation for Chidren(APAC)'. The results were as follows: (1) 37 disordered children substituted [+coronal] consonants for [-coronal] consonants (fronting of velars) and 9 disordered children substituted [-coronal] consonants for [+coronal] consonants (backing to velars). (2) Theses two phonological patterns were affected by the articulatory place of following phoneme. (3) The fronting pattern of children with articulation disorders was similar with that of general children, but their backing pattern was different with that of general children. These results show the clinical usefulness of coronal feature in phonological pattern analysis, the need of articulatory assessment with various phonetic context, and the importance of error contexts in clinical judgment.
Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate whether phonetic complexity affected the type and frequency of articulation errors and the acoustic duration of consonants and words produced by children with functional articulation and phonological disorders. Methods : The participants in this study were 20 children with functional articulation and phonological disorders and 20 children without such disorders who were between 3 years 7 months old and 4 years 11 months old. The participants were asked to name what they saw in pictures and their responses were recorded. The types and frequencies of articulation errors and the acoustic duration of words were analyzed and words were categorized as being of either 'high' or 'low' phonetic complexity. The acoustic duration of initial and final consonants and vowels following initial consonants were compared between the groups according to articulatory complexity. Results : Children with functional articulation and phonological disorders produced articulation errors more frequently when saying high complexity words and had longer word duration when saying low-complexity words than children without such disorders. There was no major difference in initial and final consonant duration between the groups. but the main effect of articulatory complexity on the duration of both consonants was significant. Conclusion : These results suggest that the articulatory-phonic structure of words influences the speech motor control ability of children with functional articulation and phonological disorders. When articulating consonants, children with functional articulation and phonological disorders had speech motor control ability similar to that of children without such disorders.
