혼잡해소를 위한 도로건설의 정책효과: 시스템 다이내믹스 이론의 적용 (Policy Impact Analysis of Road Transport Investment via System Dynamics Theory)

  • Congestion problems can be approached from the viewpoint of system dynamics theory. The relationship between road capacity and congestion can be explained by the 'relative control' archetype among four system archetypes suggested by Wolstenholme. There is a balancing feedback loop between road capacity and road congestion. However, there is another balancing loop between road congestion and car traffic volume, which keeps disrupting the equilibrium of the former loop. A system dynamics model, which is based on a partial adjustment model of induced traffic in the literature, is built to simulate three road building scenarios: 'Expanding investment', 'Balancing investment' and 'Frozen road investment' scenarios. The 'Expanding investment' scenario manages to drop congestion levels by 9% over 30 years, however, causing much higher emissions of $CO_2$ than other scenarios. The trade-off relationship between congestion levels and environmental costs must be taken into consideration for road investment policies.

  • The concept of resilience in complex and adaptive socio-economic systems, has been a buzz word in international societies and academies related to policy makers for sustainable development since some years ago. This paper deals with an application of the resilient concept, which has been told since the last some decades in the field of ecology and applied system sciences, to social science especially in system dynamics. First the author introduces the concept of equilibrium stability and resilience in simple dynamic models, and moreover provides the behavioral characteristics and examples of system resilience in terms of system dynamics. The concept of resilience in structural perspectives are also discussed with the topics of panarchy and adaptive renewal cycles, etc.

  • This paper describes the Flight Dynamics Automation (FDA) system for COMS Flight Dynamics System (FDS) and its test result in terms of the performance of the automation jobs. FDA controls the flight dynamics functions such as orbit determination, orbit prediction, event prediction, and fuel accounting. The designed FDA is independent from the specific characteristics which are defined by spacecraft manufacturer or specific satellite missions. Therefore, FDA could easily links its autonomous job control functions to any satellite mission control system with some interface modification. By adding autonomous system along with flight dynamics system, it decreases the operator's tedious and repeated jobs but increase the usability and reliability of the system. Therefore, FDA is used to improve the completeness of whole mission control system's quality. The FDA is applied to the real flight dynamics system of a geostationary satellite, COMS and the experimental test is performed. The experimental result shows the stability and reliability of the mission control operations through the automatic job control.

  • The cost-benefit analysis is a technique for assisting with decision about the use of society's scare resources. There exists no detailed assessment like cost-benefit analysis. But recently, many policy analysts criticized the merit of cost-benefit analysis. As it is, it can be said that partial or approximate estimates of benefit and cost may be more dangerous than helpful. The purpose of this study is to overcome the limit of traditional cost-benefit analysis. For this purpose, we use the system dynamics approach for setting up new cost-benefit analysis, which we named that ‘Dynamics Cost-Benefit Analysis'. The usefulness of ‘Dynamics Cost-Benefit Analysis' is as follows; finding structural causal relationship between cost factors and benefit factors, understanding the long-term behavior of systems economic feasibility. In this study, we apply 'Dynamic Cost-Benefit Analysis' to case that is construction investment of funeral house by local government sector.

  • In this paper we consider the variable structure control for a class of discrete-time uncertain multivariable systems where the nominal system is linear. Discrete-time switching dynamics are introduced so that a new type of state trajectories called sliding mode may exist on the sliding surface by state feedback. The quantitative analysis for the matched uncertainties will show that every response of the system with the proposed switching dynamics is bounded within small neighborhoods of the state-space origin. Also, by the similarity transformation it will be shown that the eigenvalues of the closed-loop systems are composed of those of the subsystems which govern the range-space dynamics and null-space dynamics. It will be also shown that ideal sliding mode can be obtained in the absence of uncertainties due to one-step attraction to the sliding surface regardless of initial position of states.   • This paper deals with the social system from the point of system thinking consisting the fundamental construct of system dynamics. The Bertalanffy's general system theory, having been criticized because of its ambiguity, and the complex science theory, emerging system theory, are integrated by using the system thinking which is characterized with three concepts, 'feedback thinking', 'dynamic thinking', 'operational thinking'. In the integration, system thinking suggests the dynamic pattern of the social system have not only an equilibrium status but also complex status. The science of complexity gives an implication to system dynamics the important of the uncertainty and complexity if we interpret the social system as an open system. To show more concrete description, I simulate the cooperation model based on the iterated prisoner dilemma. The simulation results show the diverse patterns of cooperation and betrayal. Especially the sensitivity of initial payoff will cause the chaotic strategic landscapes as the game gose on. These results mean that we should not give the hasty prescription to control social system artificially. Because social system retains the self-organizing force in itself.

  • A conceptual system dynamics model is developed to represent the dynamic mechanism between the number of hepatitis B virus and the defense system of the body. The simulation results shows that the model behaves within the reasonable ranges. The developed conceptual model is a first attempt to quantify the dynamic mechanisms of the hepatitis B virus, where only feedback structures are considered without bio-organism data. The next step would be to incorporate the model with bio-organism theory and to carry out case studies to identify personal characteristics. Since the current model is a conceptual model where quantitative results are not based on the sound background, the usage is limited only within the qualitative basis. It could be a effective educational tool for the patients. It also shows what-to-do lists in order to be used for forecast purposes.

  • To solve the policy problem between transportation and environment in trade-offs, above all, it is necessary to understand the complicated relationship between transportation and environment clearly before selecting policy alternatives. From this point of view, this study will propose the logic structure to examine the complex interaction of transportation and environment and investigate theoretically what kinds of impact would appear by the air related polices. In this research, we used ’system-dynamics’ which investigates the complexity through the flow of information and materials and the interaction of elements, which constitutes systems. System Dynamics is an approach that the variables to decide structural relationship in a system affect one another not in only-way but in inter-way and the power of influence changes time by time. This research is trying to examine the complex interaction of transportation and air pollution. For achieving this purpose, causal maps in System Dynamics approach were used. The main issues are as follows; first, to investigate the dynamic relationship between transportation and air pollution caused by exhaust emission gas. Second, to structuralize the logic of simulation to experiment the impacts of policies to relieve air pollution.

특허 시스템의 정량 분석을 위한 시스템 다이내믹스 모형 (A System Dynamics Model for Quantitative Analysis of Patent Systems)

  • In this paper, a system dynamics model for explaining the application, grant and maintenance of patents is provided. Existing literatures regarding the patent application system are mostly econometric approaches that consider only economic variables such as GDP and R&D. The model in this paper includes patent variables such as disputes as well as economic variables. Moreover, we show that the model can be used in not only a quantitative prediction but also policy experiment. The results of the policy experiment shows that strengthening protection of patents tend to increase the propensity to patent more than R&D investment.

다물체계 해석 방법을 이용한 동력전달계의 특성 해석 (Analysis on the Dynamic Characteristics of Power Transmission System Using Multi-body Dynamics)

  • This paper presents the main method to analyze the dynamic characteristics of power transmission system using the multi-body dynamics, which is based on the concept of subsystem equation, subsystem assembling, and the self-determination technique for the system degree of freedom. We can model the mechanical components of power transmission system easily with the advantage of multi-body dynamics. Based on the theory, a dynamic simulation program was developed to analyze system performances, transient phenomena, and other dynamic problems. The driving performance of automatic transmission was simulated with using the multi-body dynamics and Newtonian method, and the validity of program was proved by comparing the two kinds of result.
