  • This paper describes the trend and inherent problems of the current statistical packages, and statistical expert system is suggested as an alternative to the conventional statistical packages. The paper then describes the components and characteristics of statistical expert system, and suggests a strategy to choose development tools to build a system.

  • We introduce the statistical system of the Commonwelth Independence State(CIS) countries located in the Central Asia. At present, the level of the national statistics production system of Korean National Statistical Office(NSO) is very high and locate on just behind Japan among all asian countries, and they are also trying to reach the statistics quality level upto the advanced developed countries in the world. To have the optimal Statistics production processing, we must understand the methodologies parts as well as the aspect of the macro statistics that can be applied to the country#s economic plan. Like the history is repeated, it is valuable to look at the development history of statistical system of other countries one century ago. We study the relationship among CIS countries along with the history of Russian statistics development. It will be helpful to look and understand the statistical system of CIS countries including Russia to use their statistics for international comparison study.

  • An important role of statistical analysis in science is interpreting observed data as evidence, that is 'what do the data say?'. Although standard statistical methods (hypothesis testing, estimation, confidence intervals) are routinely used for this purpose, the theory behind those methods contains no defined concept of evidence and no answer to the basic question 'when is it correct to say that a given body of data represent evidence supporting one statistical hypothesis against another?' (Royall, 1997). In this article, we use likelihood ratios to measure evidence provided by record values in favor of a hypothesis and against an alternative. This hypothesis is concerned on mean of an exponential model and prediction of future record values.

  • From January 1983 to December 1992, There were 1441 papers in the Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Among these papers, 783[54.3%] were original article or clinical analysis and 652[45.2%] were case reports. A total of 319 papers contained some statistical analysis. In 150 cases[47.0%] of these 319 papers, the statistical description was insufficient. Of the correctly described papers, 115[68%] had more than one statistical error. Of course, in many cases the errors were not considered to be severe, but they were often sufficient to raise doubts about some inferences. We suggest that authors should be more careful when they describe and apply statistical methods. If possible, authors should interpret results with statistical specialists. And we also suggest that our society have more extensive statistical refereeing system. This would at least prevent the worst errors from appearing in print. The last suggestion is elementary instruction in statistical methods during preclinical training.

  • Translation errors in the statistical funtions of the Korean Excel 2002 software are analyzed into three categories: Pure translation mistakes; Vague translation; Inconsistent translation. These errors have not been corrected at least for the last ten years and therefore, it is suspicious that the Korean agents for foreign software companies are more interested in marketing with monololy power than in improving quality of their products
