A Win/Lose prediction model of Korean professional baseball using machine learning technique

  • In this paper, we propose a new model for predicting effective Win/Loss in professional baseball game in Korea using machine learning technique. we used basic baseball data and Sabermetrics data, which are highly correlated with score to predict and we used the deep learning technique to learn based on supervised learning. The Drop-Out algorithm and the ReLu activation function In the trained neural network, the expected odds was calculated using the predictions of the team's expected scores and expected loss. The team with the higher expected rate of victory was predicted as the winning team. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, we compared the actual percentage of win, pythagorean expectation, and win percentage of the proposed model.

  • Background: The objective of this research is to provide base line data on Korea Baseball rehabilitation treatment by presenting the distribution of upper extremity surgeries according the surgical sites of Korean professional baseball players. Methods: The targets of this research are 561 players from nine Korean baseball clubs. The number of players that have undergone surgery was investigated. In other words, the frequency of shoulder joint surgeries, elbow joint surgeries, and wrist and hand surgeries per each baseball club was investigated. Results: The number of the players who have had surgeries was 151, but among the players, there were some who have had repeated surgeries for which the total number of surgery experience was 162. The result showed that elbow joint surgeries were the most frequently enacted, followed by shoulder joint surgeries, and wrist and hand surgeries. From the nine clubs, Samsung was the club with the highest frequency of surgeries. Conclusions: This research shows that Korean professional baseball players need special training centers with systematic rehabilitation programs. Another conclusion suggests that urgent need for rehabilitation program of upper arm which particularly focused on elbow joint is existing. On the basis of this research, we expect more studies on the specific rehabilitation programs which is categorized by injury areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore changes in future sports by introducing baseball robot umpire. The study was conducted using qualitative research methods, and participants selected five baseball fans who were interested in baseball. The results of the study are as follows. First, baseball fans expressed displeasure with the frequent misjudgment in Korean Professional Baseball game, and doubted the fairness of the umpire's judgment. And repeated misjudgment of professional baseball has contributed to the decline in viewing and viewing of baseball. Second, baseball fans were positive about the introduction of robot umpire as a way to reduce bad calls in baseball games, and considered the accuracy, consistency, and recordability of robot umpire to complement their limitations. Third, the application of baseball robot umpire will serve as a basis for strengthening the fairness and efficiency of baseball games, which will positively change the image of sports. As a result, the introduction of robot umpire in baseball games could exert desirable influence on people and contribute to restoring the ethics of sports and strengthening fairness.

A Baseball Batter Evaluation Model using Genetic Algorithm

  • In this paper, we propose a new batter evaluation model that reflects the skill of the opponent pitcher in Korean professional baseball. The model consists of evaluation factors such as Run Value, Contribution Score and Ball Consumption considering the pitcher grade. These evaluation factors are calculated as different data. In order to include the evaluation factors having different characteristics into one model, each evaluation factor is weighted and added. The genetic algorithms were used to calculate the weights, and the data were based on the 2016 records of Korea Professional Baseball and the salary data of the players of 2017. As a result of calculation of the weight, the weight of the Run Value was high and the weight of the Contribution Score was very low. This means that when calculating the annual salary, it reflects much of the expected score according to the batting result of the batter. On the other hand, the contribution score indicating the degree to which the batting result contributed to the victory of the team according to the state of the economy is not reflected in the salary or point system.

Productivity Change and Relative Efficiency of Korean Professional Baseball Teams (한국 프로야구 구단의 상대적 효율성 및 생산성 변화)

  • Most of professional baseball teams are not good for business condition because of operation costs in spite of support of mother company. This study measured the relative efficiency and productivity change of the Korean professional baseball teams using DEA model and Malmquist Index for 2006-2008. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, in case of efficiency of CCR for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(CCR value is one) are two(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions), two(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns), two(Lotte Giants, LG Twins) respectively. Second, in case of efficiency of BCC for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(BCC value is one) are three(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions, LG Twins ), four(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions, Kia Tigers), four(Lotte Giants, LG Twins, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions) respectively. Third, average of Malmquist Index representing productivity change for 2006-2008 are 1.0615, 1.0293 respectively. These values mean increase of productivity. Results of this study can be used by inefficient professional baseball teams to improve inefficiency.

Analysis of factors affecting Korean professional baseball pitcher salaries (한국프로야구에서 투수 연봉에 영향을 주는 요인)

  • In this paper, we investigate the effects of performance and non-performance variables attributed to Korean professional baseball pitchers on annual salary by the records about pitchers between 2010 and 2016. We select the variables in reference to previous research related to this topic. The models are then estimated using linear regression model. For pitchers, age, experience in the league, year, eligibility for free agency, the number of wins, WAR, the number of innings pitched, the number of games, the number of saves, the number of games started, and type of baseball team have a statistically significant effect. Among the notable factors, affecting pitchers salaries are largely measure of starting pitchers. Pitcher sabermetrics indexes were poorly reflected on annual salary. The model presented here can be used to remove any unobjective salary differences for Korean professional baseball pitchers.

  • Since 2009, a new method of computing the percentage of victories is being used in the regular league of the Korean professional baseball. This method produced enormous results from the first year of application, and also had an effect on the team standings in 2010. In this paper, we have examined the effects this method had on the Korean professional baseball in 2009 and 2010. We also have discussed what the Korea Baseball Organization need to complement in using this method and suggested complementary measures.

  • This study analyzed the effects of professional baseball PPL advertising speed on brand awareness, brand attitude, and behavioral intention for professional baseball consumers. The purpose of this study is to present a method that can be used as a variety of marketing utilization strategies of professional baseball teams and parent companies. This study was conducted on 411 professional baseball consumers. For data processing, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS 25.0 Window Version. Then, the average variance extraction index (AVE) and construct validity (CR) were calculated to verify convergent validity and discriminant validity. In addition, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed using AMOS 25.0. As a result, first, it was found that entertainment, informativeness, and discomfort, which are sub-factors of PPL advertisement speed, have a significant effect on brand recognition. Second, entertainment, information, and discomfort, which are sub-factors of PPL advertising speed, have a significant effect on brand attitude. Third, entertainment, informativeness, and discomfort, which are sub-factors of PPL advertisement speed, have a significant effect on behavioral intention. Fourth, it was found that brand awareness and brand attitude have a significant effect on behavioral intention.

  • In this paper, we discuss the schedule problems for Korean Professional Baseball League (KPBL) and propose approaches to solve these problems by applying Integer Programming. A schedule in a sport league must satisfy lots of constraints on timing such as organizational, attractiveness, and fairness requirements. Organizational requirements cover a set of rules which have to guarantee that all the games can be scheduled according to the regulations imposed by Korean Baseball Organization (KBO). Attractiveness requirements focus on what stadium visitors, television spectators, and the clubs expect, that is, a varied, eventful, and exciting season. Fairness requirements have to guarantee that no team is handicapped or favored in comparison with the others. In addition to finding a feasible schedule that meets all the constraints, the problem addressed in this paper has the additional complexity of having the objective of minimizing the travel costs and every team has the balancing number of the games in home. We formalize the KPBL problem into an optimization problem and adopt the concept of evolution strategy to solve it. Using the method proposed, it is efficient to find better results than approaches developed before.

Visual Representation and Applications of Hitting Direction in Korean Baseball Records

  • Most important thing in professional baseball game among all kinds of sports is the winning. Both coaches and players collected and analyzed lots of game data to get a victory. In this paper, batting data are analyzed so as to represent informations of hitting direction visually. This method could be provided a lot of useful information about hitting direction of a specific batter or a team to not only coaches, players but also the audience.
