  • Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of treatment effect between Oriental Medicine therapy and Oriental and Western Medicine combination therapy on traffic accident patients. Methods Sixty one traffic accident patients were randomly assigned to the Oriental Medicine therapy group(group I)and Oriental and Western Medicine combination therapy group(group II). Evaluations were made before treatment, after one week treatment and after two weeks treatment using Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Oswestry disability Index(ODI), Neck Disability Index(NDI), Roland Morris Disability Scale(RMDS). The obtained data were analyzed and compared. Results The group I showed significant improvement(p<0.05) according to the VAS, NDI. But that showed insignificant improvement according to the ODI, RMDS. The group II showed significant improvement(p<0.05) according to the VAS, NDI. But that showed insignificant improvement according to the ODI, RMDS. And the difference between the two groups were insignificant according to VAS, NDI, ODI and RMDS. Conclusion There is no significant difference between the two groups after each therapy on traffic accident patients. Further studies are needed for the comparison of the Oriental Medicine therapy and Western Medicine combination therapy.

  • This study investigated the Oriental medicine knowledge and educational requirement of medical staff working in Oriental-Western collaborative medicine hospitals(except for Oriental and Western medicine doctors) based on the recognition that not only mutual understanding and cooperation between Oriental and Western medicine doctors but also the knowledge of Oriental medicine of medical support staff such as nurses, medical technologists, pharmacists and administrative staff are very important to promote Oriental-Western collaborative medical treatment. The study results are summarized as follows : First, it was found that the ratio of nurses who took Oriental medicine education was much higher than those of other groups. They took Oriental medicine education in the types of school curriculum (27.0%) and special lectures in workplace(20.4%). Second, many of the people who took Oriental medicine education were found to be not satisfied with the education in general - 32.7% of them answered the education content was "so so" and 48.4% of them answered "unsatisfactory." Third, the general necessity of Oriental medicine education was found to be an average of 3.60 out of 5, and the number was higher "after employment"(average=3.85) than "before employment"(average=3.04). Fourth, the study found that Oriental-Western collaborative medicine hospital staff are well aware of the necessity of the knowledge of Oriental medicine in the cases of communications between different occupational types, consultations with patients or their guardians, treatment and nursing and the establishment of the practice of specialized Oriental medicine institutes. Fifth, the levels of Oriental medicine knowledge showed a difference in average value according to the role range(p<0.000), and it was found that there is an interaction effect between occupation type and role range(p<0.015).

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Gamigumguesingi-hwan(Jiaweijinkuishenqi-wan) against urinary frequency. Methods : Gamigumguesingi-hwan(Jiaweijinkuishenqi-wan) is known as a useful herbal medication for urinary fequency. So we treat two patients with Gamigumguesingi-hwan(Jiaweijinkuishenqi-wan) three times a day. By investigating the frequency of urine, we can get some data. Results : One patient's nocturia frequency was counted 10 times to 3 times and voided volume was increased. The other patient's nocturia frequency was counted 10 times to 3~4 times. Conclusions : Gamigumguesingi-hwan(Jiaweijinkuishenqi-wan) is effective in urinary frequency and nocturia.

  • Guillain-Barre syndrome, or acute inflammatory polyneuritis, is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks parts of the peripheral nervous system. The causes and mechanisms of this syndrome are unknown. Typically, Guillain-Barre syndrome can be diagnosed from the patient's symptoms and physical examination such as the rapid onset of weakness, paralysis and loss of reflexes. The analysis of CSF and electrical tests on nerve and muscle function can be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Most cases occur shortly after a viral infection. This is a clinical report about one patient suspected as having Guillain-Barre syndrome. The patient, a 62-year-old man had weakness in both legs after gastroduodenal disease. His weakness and general condition improved after Korean medical treatments, so this is reported as a potential treatment.

  • Objectives : To study the cervical lordosis and roentgenographic analysis of cervical disc space in neck pain with or without temporomandibular disorder(TMD). Methods : Radiographic measures of cervical lordosis, cervical disc space narrowing were collected, statiscally analyzed. Results : TMD group showed a significant increase in cervical lordotic angle as compared with non-TMD group, whereas no significant change in cervical disc degeneration. Conclusions : The findings from this study suggest that the curvature of the cervical spine is related to the subject's TMD.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of using Korean medicine treatment with post-concussion syndrome. We primarily treated the patient's post-concussion syndrome during hospitalization (22.04-22.11.11) with Korean medicine treatments (herbal medicine, acupuncture, and Chuna therapy). The KHIT-6 and Numeric Rating Scale were used to assess symptom (headache, dizziness, and nausea) changes. Following treatment, the patient's KHIT-6 and Numeric Rating Scale scores decreased. This study suggests that Korean medicine may be effective in the treatment of post-concussion syndrome.

  • Objective : We proposed fundamental rules of prospective Korean Standard Classification of Diseases(Oriental Medicine). Methods : We analysed Korean Standard Classification of Diseases(Oriental Medicine)(established in 1994) in comparison with ICD-10 and Chinese Standard Classification of Disease(Traditional Chinese Medicine). Secondly, we analysed the diagnostic structure of Modem oriental medicine. Results : Korean Standard Classification of Diseases has an inappropriate writing structure, logical errors of classification, confusion of symptoms, 'bing', and 'zheng', inappropriate comparison of disease designations in oriental medicine and western medicine, and the ommission of important items. Secondly, we demonstrate the relations of 'bing' and 'zheng' in modem oriental medicine and disease designations in oriental medicine and western medicine. Conclusions : We propose the separate classification of 'bing' and 'zheng', the qualification of designated names, the structure of 'bing' and 'zheng' system, and a different writing method.

Method : We collected 86 articles on Yangseng study result from the OASIS system using the keyword 'Yangseng'. Results : There were Yangseng study papers that were published between 1963 and 2011. Published 21 papers on The Korean Journal of Oriental Preventive Medicine were more than the other journals. Literature studies account for 78% of total studies, whereas clinical studies account for only 22%. Effects of clinical studies was evaluated mainly by survey. Conclusions : High quality experimental studies and intervention studies have not yet been published. It is necessary to research and develop duration of Yangseng effect and tools for evaluating.

  • Objectives This study was to investigate the correlation of low back pain, stress by event, and fear-avoidance beliefs caused by traffic accident. Methods We investigated 103 cases of out-patient with traffic accident. The patients answered that Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Impact of Event Scale Revised Korean Version (IES-R-K), and Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) on the first medical examination. We calculated statistical significance with this data. Results VAS, IES-R-K, and FABQ scores of the female patients with the traffic accident were higher than the male patients. VAS, IES-R-K, and FABQ scores showed low significant positive correlation and showed partial correlation between IES-R-K and FABQ, controlled by VAS, had no statistical significance in this research. Conclusions More considerations on pain, stress by event, and fear avoidance belief should be needed in treatment of the traffic accident patients.
