This study was conducted to establish a simple mass-screening method for resistant melon to Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis (FOM). Root-dipping inoculation method has been used to investigate resistance of melon plants to Fusarium wilt. However, the inoculation method requires a lot of labor and time because of complicate procedure. To develop a simple screening method on melon Fusarium wilt, occurrence of Fusarium wilt on susceptible and resistant cultivars of melon according to inoculation method including root-dipping, soil-drenching, tip, and scalpel methods was investigated. Scalpel and tip methods showed more clear resistant and susceptible responses in the melon cultivars than root-dipping inoculation method, but tip method represented slightly variable disease severity. In contrast, in the case of soil-drenching inoculation method, disease severity of the susceptible cultivars was very low. Thus we selected scalpel method as inoculation method of a simple screening method for melon Fusarium wilt. By using the scalpel inoculation method, resistance degrees of the cultivars according to incubation temperature after inoculation (25 and $30^{\circ}C$) and inoculum concentration ($1{\times}10^6$ and $1{\times}10^7conidia/ml$) were measured. The resistance or susceptibility of the cultivars was hardly affected by all the tested conditions. To look into the effectiveness of scalpel inoculation methods, resistance of 22 commercial melon cultivars to FOM was compare with root-dipping inoculation method. When the melon cultivars were inoculated by scalpel method, resistance responses of all the tested cultivars were clearly distinguished as by root-dipping method. Taken together, we suggest that an efficient simple mass-screening method for resistant melon plant to Fusarium wilt is to sow the seeds of melon in a pot (70 ml of soil) and to grow the seedlings in a greenhouse ($25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) for 7 days, to cut the root of seedlings with a scalpel and then pour a 10 ml-aliquot of the spore suspension of $1{\times}10^6conidia/ml$ on soil. The infected plants were cultivated in a growth room at 25 to $30^{\circ}C$ for about 3 weeks with 12-hr light a day.
A pot experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of boron on the growth, symptom, yield, and content of boron in Perilla(Perilla frutescens var. japonica HARA), Melon(Cucumis melo L.) and Cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.). The results obtained are as follows. Perilla. melon and cucumber uptake a lot of boron from the soil, and toxic effects of boron result in leaf tip yellowing by progressive necrosis. Yield of perilla, melon and cucumber are decreased at the $3{\sim}5mg\;kg^{-1}$, $5{\sim}10mg\;kg^{-1}$ of boron applicated in soil, respectively. Boron content in the leaf is the highest among various parts plant, and the tip and margin of the leaf contained more boron than central part of the leaf. Boron applicated was moved and accumulated to the plant and soil.
The study was intended to know the responses of the nitrogen application levels (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15kg ai per $1O^a$) to grain yield and quality of two-malting barley, Golden melon and Hyang maek in 1980. There was investigated chlorophyll content, dry weight, heading, grain yield, yield components, contents of protein, fat and carbohydrate and activity of $\beta$-amylase and invertase. Nitrogen increment was effective to increase of number of grains per spike and number of spikes per unit area, increase of protein content and decrease of $\beta$-amylase activity, but it was not recognized the yield increase under the 12% protein content.
Rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred on melon (Cucumis melo L.) in the box at Jinju City Wholesale Market of Agricultural Products at Gyeongnam province in Korea. The infected fruits were rapidly water-soaked, softened, black and eventually rotted. The symptoms were infected from wounds at harvest time. The colony were white to light brown, formed much sporangiospores. The optimum temperature of the fungus was $30^{\circ}C$. Sporangia were globose or hemispheric, white at first and gradually to black, and $80{\sim}195\;{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiophores were $12{\sim}24\;{\mu}m$ in width. Columella were hemispheric, and $70{\sim}90\;{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were irregular round or oval, brownish-black and $9{\sim}20\;{\times}\;6{\sim}8\;{\mu}m$ in size. On the basis of symptom, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to melon, the causal fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vuill.. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot by R. stolonifer on melon in Korea.
Although phosphogypsum can have profound effects on both the physical and chemical properties of certain soils with supplying the essential elements, no widespread use of by-product phosphogypsum will be made unless such uses pose no threat to the public health and soil contaminations. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of phosphogypsum on the growth of oriental melon and soil properties in plastic film house. Phosphogypsum was treated at the rate of $70kg\;CaO\;10a^{-1}$ and the effects were compared with the treatment of Ca-Mg carbonate. In the treatment of phosphogypsum, early growth of oriental melon was significantly increased comparing to the growth in the Ca-Mg carbonate treatment. Total fruit yield was not different between the treatments of phosphogypsum and Ca-Mg carbonate, but marketable fruit yield was higher in the phosphogypsum treatment. Although Ca and S contents in oriental melon were increased in the phosphogypsum treatment, contents of toxic heavy metals including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb were not different between the two treatments. Also, soil pH and contents of extractable toxic metals in the soil were not significantly different between the two treatments after the experiment. These results suggest that phosphogypsum can be a valuable substitute for lime materials in high pH soils of plastic film house.
Volatile flavor components of watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris S.) and oriental melon (Cucumis melo L.) obtained by simultaneous steam distillation and extraction apparatus were separated by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Thirty seven and fifty five volatile flavor components were identified in watermelon and oriental melon, respectively. (Z)-3-Nonen-1-ol, (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadien-1-ol, (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal and (E)-2-nonenal containing unsaturated nine carbon atoms were the characteristic flavor components of watermelon. $C_{9}-Unsaturated$ esters including (Z)-3-nonenyl acetate, (Z)-6-nonenyl acetate, (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadienyl acetate and thioester were important components in the flavor profile of oriental melon.
This study examined the bioactive compound content and the antioxidant activities of bitter melon (Momordica charantia Linn.) leaves. The content of vitamin C, beta-carotene, and total carotenoids was 69.77, 45.68, and 65.08 mg/100 g, respectively. To investigate the antioxidant capacity, bitter melon leaves were extracted using various concentrations of ethanol (60, 80, or 100%). Highest content of total polyphenols (18.07 mg gallic acid equivalent/g) and flavonoids (4.53 mg cathechin equivalent/g) was found in the 100% ethanolic extract of the leaves (E100). Also, the E100 extract showed the highest levels of 2,2'azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and α-α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activities. Reducing power was also the highest (39.21 mg Trolox equivalent/g) in E100 extract. The E100 extract effectively inhibited lipid peroxidation by 91.45% compared to the control group. Also, the E100 extract showed a cytoprotective effect against oxidative stress in HepG2 cells and decreased the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species. These results suggest that bitter melon leaves could be regarded as a potential source of natural antioxidants.
Oriental melon, Cucumis melo L. cv. Geumssaragieuncheon, grafted on Shintozoa (Cucurbit maxima ${\times}$ Cu. moschata) was planted in a greenhouse infested with Meloidogyne arenaria and root galls were examined five months after planting. A gram of root gall was volumed at ca. 10 cm3 and contained in an average of 363 females (170 developing and 193 matured females), 2,120 secondstage juveniles (J2), and 13,074 eggs. In addition, there was 56 J2 per $cm^3$ soil around the infested plant. An oriental melon had an average of 134.6 g of root gall (70% of total root weight) per 0.72 $m^2$ area. In a conservative estimation, an oriental melon plant could accommodate ca. 1.2 ${\times}$$10^7$ eggs and J2 per 0.72 $m^2$. The eggs contained in root tissues could be an important inoculum source to the next crop and the fate of these eggs are well worth further investigation.
Monosporascus cannonballus, a soilborne ascomycetes is recently described in Korea that causes root rot/vine decline of cucurbits. The effect of Monosporascus root rot disease on photosynthetic activity and growth was studied on oriental melon plants. At harvest stage, photosynthetic activity of diseased oriental melon plants was lower and stomatal resistance was higher than healthy plants, while xylem exudates were not observed in diseased plants. There was no difference in mineral contents of the leaves and stems between diseased and healthy plants. Leaf area, fresh and dry weights, and fruit weights of the plants were markedly decreased in diseased plants compared to those of healthy plants.

In September and October 2005, melons(Cucumis melo L.) from the commercial greenhouses in Naju and Gwangju exhibited severe foliar necrosis and fruit rot. Leaf symptoms initially appeared as V-shaped, necrotic lesions and extending to the midrib. Symptoms on the fruit were occurred randomly as necrotic and sunken spots. Two isolates from diseased leaves and fruits were identified as Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli on the basis of bacteriological and genetic characteristics. Pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed by inoculating on 3-week-old melon and cucumber seedlings. This is the first report of bacterial fruit blotch of melon in Korea.
