The flank wear at the minor cutting edge significantly affects the geometric accuracy and surface roughness in finish machining. A fuzzy estimator based on a fuzzy inference algorithm with a max-min composition rule is introduced to evaluate the minor flank wear length. The features sensitive to minor flank wear are extracted from the dispersion analysis of a time series AR model of the feed directional acceleration signal. These features, dispersions, are used for constructing linguistic rules, and then the fuzzy inferences are carried out with test data sets collected under various cutting conditions. The proposed system turns out to be effective for estimating minor flank wear length.
This study aimed to investigate speech motor control in adults who stutter (AWS) by testing whether articulation rate changes with practice and linguistic complexity. Eleven AWS and 11 adults who do not stutter (AWNS) repeated four sentences of different lengths and syntactic complexity [simple-short (SS), simple-long (SL), complex-long (CL), and faulty-long (FL) sentences]. Overall articulation rates of each sentence were measured and compared between groups. Practice effects were evaluated by comparing the articulation rates of the first three, middle four, and last three productions. Overall, the AWS had significantly slower articulation rates than AWNS across the four sentences. The longer sentences showed significantly slower articulation rates than the baseline sentence (SS). The articulation rates of the middle four and the last three productions were significantly faster than those of the first three productions of each sentence in both groups. The articulation rates of the SS, SL, and CL sentences indicated a consistent practice effect. The slower articulation rates of the AWS are consistent with a speech motor limitation. There was no interaction with linguistic complexity or practice, so a slower articulation rate may be a general feature of the speech of AWS. Both AWS and AWNS showed practice effects with faster articulation rates which may reflect a degree of adaptation to the stimuli.
Text Generation is a process of generating comprehensible texts in human languages from some underlying non-linguistic representation of information. Among several sub-processes for text generation to generate coherent texts, this paper concerns referring expression generation which produces different types of expressions to refer to previously-mentioned things in a discourse. Specifically, we focus on pronominalization by zero pronouns which frequently occur in Korean. To build a generation model of referring expressions for Korean, several features are identified based on grammatical information and cost-based centering model, which are applied to various machine learning techniques. We demonstrate that our proposed features are well defined to explain pronominalization, especially pronominalization by zero pronouns in Korean, through 95 texts from three genres - Descriptive texts, News, and Short Aesop's Fables. We also show that our model significantly outperforms previous ones with a 99.9% confidence level by a T-test.
Background in a novel is most important elements with characters and events, and means time, place and situation that characters appeared. Among the background, spatial background can help conveys topic of a novel. So, it may be helpful for choosing a novel that readers want to read. In this paper, we are targeting Korean historical novels. In case of English text, It can be recognize spatial background easily because it use upper and lower case and words used with the spatial information such as Bank, University and City. But, in case Korean text, it is difficult to recognize that spatial background because there is few information about usage of letter. In the previous studies, they use machine learning or dictionaries and rules to recognize about spatial information in text such as news and text messages. In this paper, we build a nation dictionaries that refer to information such as 'Korean history' and 'Google maps.' We Also propose a method for recognizing spatial background based on patterns of postposition in Korean sentences comparing to previous works. We are grasp using of postposition with spatial background because Korean characteristics. And we propose a method based on result of morpheme analyze and frequency in a novel text for raising accuracy about recognizing spatial background. The recognized spatial background can help readers to grasp the atmosphere of a novel and to understand the events and atmosphere through recognition of the spatial background of the scene that characters appeared.
The aim of this paper is to describe the linguistic differences of two Koreas with a special emphasis on the phonetic aspect of Seoul and Pyongyang speech. The sources of the North Korean speech material used in the study are 1) the Pyongyang radio and TV broadcasts, 2) interviews of north Korean defectors and 3) speech material of north Korean scholars collected by the writer in london, Warsaw, France and China between 1989 and 1994. The most noticeable phonetic differences of Seoul and Pyongyang speech are abstracted as follows: 1) The vowels /이/, /에/ and /애/ are higher and fronter in Pyongyang speech than in Seoul speech. 2) The vowels /우/ and /으/ of Pyongyang speech are somewhat fronter than the corresponding vowels of Seoul speech. 3) The Pyongyang vowels /으/ and if are produced with rounded lips compared to the corresponding Seoul vowels. 4) The Pyongyang vowel /h) is much lower in tongue position and at the same time somewhat fronter than the corresponding Seoul vowel. 5) The consonants /r ,i ,n / are pronounced in Pyongyang as alveolar affricates or something close to them whereas they are pronounced in Seoul as post-alveolar affricates. 6) Unlike in Seoul speech there is a very strong tendency in Pyongyang speech to reduce aspiration feature in consonant seouences such as /ㅂ+ㅎ/, /ㄷ+ㅎ/, /ㄱ+ㅎ/. 7) /ㄴ/ and /ㄹ/(flap) freely occur word-initially in Pyongyang speech whereas they are restricted in Seoul speech. 8) Unlike in Seoul speech the phonemic contrast of long and short vowels are generally not functional in Pyongyang speech. Thus the vowels pronounced long in Seoul speech are usually pronounced short in Pyongyang speech.
Referential expression 'Geot' is often occurred in Korean dialogues. However, it has not been properly dealt with by the previous researchers of reference resolution, since it is not by itself the referential expression like pronoun and definite noun phrases, and it has never been discriminated from non-referring 'geot'. To resolve this problem, we establish a feature set which is based on the linguistic property of 'geot' and the discourse property of its text, and propose a method to identify referential 'geot' from non-referring 'geot' using decision tree. In the experiment, our system achieved the F-measures of 92.3% for non-referring geot and of 82.2% for referential geot and the total classification performance of 89.27%, and outperformed the classification system based on pattern rules.

The purpose of this study is to understand the feature and phenomena of women's costume in Choson dynasty by the approach of semiotics. In order to do so, F Saussure's linguistic symbol theory, C. Peirce's conception on semiology theory and cultural semiology of R. Barthes ware used as tool to analyse traditional women's costumes in $Chos\v{o}n$ dynasty. And I choose basic conceptions based on their semiotic theory. which were langue & parole. dennotation & connotation, paradigm & syntagm, code, and analysed. structure of sign, communication though the non-language. The fashion of the $Chos\v{o}n$ dynasty contains various meaning as sign symbol system and makes the communication possible as it is mentioned above. We nay understand the sign symbol system described in the fashion sign by analysing the structure and meaning operation of sign on the basis of social, political, and idealistic background of the times, to understand the polysemy quality of the fashion.

This study analyzes the linguistic meanings of the messages displayed on the Gwanghwamun Billboard from summer 1997 to spring 2020. The Gwanghwamun Billboard, an important medium reflecting cultural and social changes in contemporary Korean society, has conveyed hope and solace to the public through various literary quotes and emotional messages. This research identifies frequently appearing themes and messages by analyzing the frequency of keywords in the postings for each season. The results reveal that spring and summer primarily feature messages emphasizing new beginnings, challenges, love, and human relationships, as well as the beauty of nature, while autumn and winter convey themes of reflection, growth, endurance, and resilience. This study demonstrates that the Gwanghwamun Billboard encourages readers to adopt a positive outlook on life through seasonally tailored messages.

Recently, neural network-based speech recognition has been studied to utilize the adaptivity and learnability of neural network models. However, conventional neural network models have difficulty in the co-articulation processing and the boundary detection of similar phonmes of the Korean speech. Also, in case of using one phonotopic map, learning speed may dramatically increase and inaccuracies may be caused because homogeneous learning and recognition method should be applied for heterogenous data. Hence, in this paper, a neural net typewriter has been designed using a hierarchical self-organizing classifier(HSOC), and related algorithms are presented. This HSOC, during its learing stage, distributed phoneme data on hierarchically structured multiple phonotopic maps, using Kohonen's self-organizing feature maps(SOFM). Presented and experimented in this paper were the algorithms for deciding the number of maps, map sizes, the selection of phonemes and their placement per map, an approapriate learning and preprocessing method per map. If maps are divided according to a priorlinguistic knowledge, we would have difficulty in acquiring linguistic knowledge and how to alpply it(e.g., processing extended phonemes). Contrarily, our HSOC has an advantage that multiple phonotopic maps suitable for given input data are self-organizable. The resulting three korean phonotopic maps are optimally labelled and have their own optimal preprocessing schemes, and also confirm to the conventional linguistic knowledge.
