  • This paper presents a landscape design for the meeting plaza around the "Myeonmok" subway station. The site is located at 120-1 Myeonmok 1-dong, Jnngrang-gu, Seoul, and its area is approximately $2,664.7m^2$. The goal of the design was to make an environmentally friendly meeting and rest place which was related to the subway station. To achieve this goal, concepts of history, tradition, sense of place, community, environmental friendliness, and function were developed. For history, stone sculpture and art tiles symbolizing the paleolithic area were introduced because the site is located near an archaeological site of paleolithic min. For tradition, considering that the site is a 'sailing ship' form in terms of Pungsu theory, a sculpture symbolizing a sailing ship and paving patterns symbolizing waves were introduced. For asense of place, a grass hill, a waterfall and a pond symbolizing an old meadow for horse pasture was introduced. In addition, a multi-purpose round plaza as a meeting place for local community and subway users was proposed. A zelkova grove symbolizing a village forest was proposed for a restand relaxation area. All areas were designed to be environmentally friendly and barrier-free. Concepts for a defensible space wereadapted for safety because the site was a crime-prone area.

  • This landscape design proposal was presented to a design competition for the Incheon-city Southern Region Integrated Disposal Treatment Facility. The site is located in Dongchun-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. The main design concepts are as follows: First, considering connection of the site with surrounding water, inner sea is designed as an environmentally friendly place and as a leisure-sports theme park in which several sports facilities and relaxing places are arranged. It is also designed for everyone: people of all ages, disabled, workers, visitors and local residents. The design was processed on the basis of survey, analysis of surrounding competing facilities and SWOT analysis. Second, the ecological planting model was developed by analyzing the natural vegetation map in the surrounding area and planted vegetation types in the seaside reclamation area. The model was then applied to the ecological community, park area and roadside trees, so as to harmonize with the local habitat. Third, the project is intended to launch private capital for managing the sports park and golf course. This will enable a entrepreneur to make flexible plans for golf training field that is expected to yield a good financial return. It is expected that this design would serve the local residents as a symbolic, environmentally friendly leisure-sports theme park.

  • This paper reviews and examines the empirical results of past research concerning individual differences and similarities in landscape preference and evaluation. The conflicting results (differences and similarities) found in the review are attributed to the variety of methodology adopted by the past research and to the lack of comprehensive theoretical base in the field of landscape research. Two suggestions are derived from the review. First, both the landscape type to be evaluated and the measurement context to be used by research subjects have critical importance in results. Thus, it is suggested that researchers should be careful in selecting landscape type and measurement tool. Second, more scholartic endeavours should be put into a development of comprehensive theory of landscape experience that could explain both differences and similarities in people's landscape preference and evaluation. Once developed, the theory would not only provide us more valid and specific research methodology, but also allow us to design more healthy and valued landscape.

  • ^x This paper focuses on clarifying the diverse conceptions of landscape, of which ambiguity gives rise to confusion to the theory and practice of landscape architecture. Landscape in the form of landscipe has once indicated land, a defined space or a humanized environment, cultivated and inhabited for the purpose of biological sustenance of ordinary people. With the advent of landschap(landscape) painting, its concept moved from the real world to the scenery, a prospect, 'a portion of earth's surface that can be seen at once by a man who is himself upon the surface. 'Once appeared, it remained as a central concept until the 19th century when the modern land-scape architecture, which claims to stand for the democratic planning and environmental design, emerged. However, it still survives as the most popular concept :a landscape is a man-made, beautiful scene. To the contrary, the geographers hold that a landscape is not an actual scene viewed by a particular observer, but is a generalization induced from the observation of many individual scene. Since it is not only very attractive to the general public, but also very important to the designers, scholars and artists, operational definitions of landscape are urgently needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to prepare some more up-dated and advanced curriculum in Landscape Architecture in Junior College education to bring up a leading professional who can meet the changing social needs. To achieve this goal, the data about the actual employment status of graduates, current relevant systems and legistations, the questionnaires of Landscape companies, graduates and undergraduates, and the current relevant curriculum of domain 6 junior colleges and Japanese relevant curriculum was gathered and analyzed The results are as follows ; 1. Currently the majority of the graduates are employed in Construction field, but the employment trend of graduates shows diversification and subdividing as following 5 fields, that is Construction, Design, Maintenance, Administration and Indoor Landscaping. 2. It is essential to bring up a Landscape Technician who has a Landscape Certificate of qualifications(esp. 2nd class). 3. Lately, the actual Practice came to be one item of the qualifying examination, so the subjects of Landscape Design, Landscape Construction and Landscape Estimation Should be emphasized, Accordingly, current curriculum should be revised. 4. Currant curriculum model(1979) made by the Ministry of Education doesn't play a real and adequate role and should be up-dated in view of the current curriculum of domain 6 junior colleges has no regular standards. In preparation for new standardized curriculum model, following criterior could be suggested, that is, ratio of the Major Required Subjects vs. The Major Optional Subjects would be 50 : 50, and the Major Optional Subject would be 48 credits which is 150% of the Required Credits(32 credits) 5. The subjects such as Basic Agriculture, Afforestation, Nature Conservation, Sketch, Civil Engineering, Landscape Seminar and Modelling Practice would be deleted in the curriculum model established in 1983. 6. The subjects such as Perspective Practice, Indoor Landscaping, Landscape Legislation and Landscape Design( III ) could be newly opened to meet the social needs, to prepare for the qualifying examination and to serve well in the employment fields. 7. The subjects of Surveying ( I ) & ( II ) would be unified into one Subject as Surveying, and some in view of the average situation of 6 junior colleges. 8. It is urgent to open some subject related to computer. At first, An Introduction to Computer could be recommended in the cultural studies course and Landscape Computer Technique as the Major Optional Subjects.
