  • Using mobile technology in educational and learning environments has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. In this mobile environment, mobile phones have been used to enhance the effectiveness of education in the field, which has been recognized through numerous experimental studies so far. The study was proposed and conducted to find out how much the use of mobile phones can have to improve the grammatical knowledge of EFL students. Introduction of 95 intermediate courses to Chungnam area The second grade students of 4-year college participated in this study. Everyone in the experimental and control groups was given the opportunity to review and recur to use the six grammar formats, including the current complete tense, simple past tense, direct and indirect question sentences, and comparative and superative-based methods. During the class discussion, the participants of the group record their voice on their cell phones, analyze the mistakes in the expressions recorded as a task after the class, and explain the results in the next session. However, in the class of the control group participants, this recording process is omitted. Participants benefited from mobile learning were much more positive in multidimensional grammar tests than those in control groups.

  • This study was purposed to discuss an educational concept of listening potential in ESL/EFL contexts as a counterpart of the reading potential concept in L1 contexts. As a preliminary condition for the concept of listening potential, this study investigated a relationship between reading and listening proficiency of ESL/EFL learners, focusing on roles of grammar knowledge in reading and listening comprehension. Reading and listening comprehension and grammar knowledge test scores of 231 Korean college students studying at a university in the U.S. were analyzed for this study. This study found that there was a positive correlation between reading proficiency and listening proficiency of Korean ESL college students. Grammar knowledge played significant roles accounting for reading and listening comprehension. Furthermore, this study found a difference between the reading proficiency and the listening proficiency across the stages of language development. However, results of this study did not empirically verify the concept of listening potential.

  • This study aims to give a syntactic and semantic analysis of the phe- nomenon of Quantifier Floating in the framework of Generalixed Cate- gorial Grammar. Floated quantifiers like neys-i as in Hakayngtul-i neys-i swul-ul masyessta are syntactically analyxed as VP modifiers(VP/VP), and semantically as involving nominalixed properties. Related forms like neys(NP/NP) and neys-ul(TV-TV) are also given rigorous syntactic and semantic analysis. A successful anaysis sheds light on the possiblity of using Categorial Grammar, which is subject to adjacency principle, for the (computer) processing od Korean.

  • The interests in Machine Translation(MT) have gotten revitalized lately with the rapid expansion of internet users. MT technology has gone through several different stages of development, but the longest surviving methods usually maintains the following characteristics: the expand ability and flexibility based on proved linguistic formalism, the transfer method of translation, the continued efforts of systematic updates being made into the system. This paper introduces one such system, L&H Korean-English bidirectional MT system. This system uses Lexical-Functional Grammar as its linguistic framework. It also adopts the transfer method of MT and has been around on the market for over 10 years for other language pairs. Currently, the system covers over 10 different languages including Chinese, Japanese and Arabic, in addition to European languages. This paper will review the system in its core and discuss related tools and resources be ing used to enhance the quality of translation.

  • Foreign learners are not focusing on "적" grammar. Therefore, the lack of materials on "적" is the reason that foreign learners use "적" in real life. In particular, when teaching the Chinese-dependent noun "적", there are some problems in making the Chinese equivalent of "적". more accurately understood by Koreans. In addition, when using grammar through analyzing the grammatical conjunction centered on "적" and the corresponding expression of Chinese, the main reason for the error is that there is no common concept and form in the mother tongue, so there is no consciousness. Therefore, it is difficult for learners to learn similar expressions that are not in Chinese or Korean. Therefore, this study aims to improve specific educational programs for Korean learners and Korean Chinese learners in terms of the time system and the corresponding performance of Chinese grammar and Chinese characters based on the previous version of "적".

  • In the area of natural language processing, a lot of unification-based grammar formalisms have been issued and are highlighted. The core of the formalisms is an unification of feature stutures. But few formal unification methodologies have been developed. Therfore, implementers of the formalisms could not help adopting an ad hoc design strategy for the unification module. In this paper, we suggest an efficient unification methodology using FUL, a programming language whic supports the unification. For the exeample, we will trace the unification processes in LFG and HPSG, the representative unification-based grammar formalisms, with FUL.

  • This paper is a survey on the characteristics of reduplication in Bahasa Indonesia(B1). B1 abound in reduplicated sound-symbolic expressions. like Japanes and Korean, as such reduplication is considered as one of the significant morphological processes in B1. Despite the huge number of these expressions in B1. scholarship has not hitherto paid much of attentions to their non-arbitrary characteristics nor has not explained their iconicity systematically so far. This study concerns about the needs to describe the iconic patterns of reduplication in the grammar of B1. Firstly, tense-iconicity could be shown in verbal reduplicatives. Secondly, idiomatic reduplicatives could be considered as the remnants of diachronic reduplicated sound-symbolid expressions. The iconicity of reduplication of B1 must be described in a distinct component of the grammar of B1. As one of the simple-structured languages in the world. B1 shows iconic patterns, being fundamentally language-specific, in the grammar. But at the moment, we do not have the formal lingustic tools necessary for describing iconicity. This problem could probably be solved by modifying formal conventions about rules and features.

  • This paper describes a method for automatic acquisition of wide-coverage treebank-based deep linguistic resources for Japanese, as part of a project on treebank-based induction of multilingual resources in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG). We automatically annotate LFG f-structure functional equations (i.e. labelled dependencies) to the Kyoto Text Corpus version 4.0 (KTC4) (Kurohashi and Nagao 1997) and the output of of Kurohashi-Nagao Parser (KNP) (Kurohashi and Nagao 1998), a dependency parser for Japanese. The original KTC4 and KNP provide unlabelled dependencies. Our method also includes zero pronoun identification. The performance of the f-structure annotation algorithm with zero-pronoun identification for KTC4 is evaluated against a manually-corrected Gold Standard of 500 sentences randomly chosen from KTC4 and results in a pred-only dependency f-score of 94.72%. The parsing experiments on KNP output yield a pred-only dependency f-score of 82.08%.
