  • The purpose of this study was to identify for extenders, adhesives, colorants, and fungicides suitable for the production of high-quality film-coated seeds of Chinese cabbage. In addition, the effect of various additives used for film coating on the germination of coated seeds and seedling vigor was investigated to establish appropriate treatment conditions for film coating efficiency. The germination rate and germination speed in Chinese cabbage film-coated seeds did not differ significantly depending on the type and concentration of the extender, while the use of Talc resulted in superior granulation capacity and adhesion of the seed coat in comparison to Zeolite. There was no significant difference in the germination rate depending on the type of adhesive used for film coating of Chinese cabbage seeds, but the germination rate was slightly slower in the film-coated seeds using carboxymethyl cellulose as an adhesive. On the other hand, the seeds coated with a film using 1% PVA as an adhesive not only maintained hardness enough to withstand external pressure, but also showed a high germination rate. In addition, the suitable disinfectant for film coating was venoram, and the treatment concentration was good at 250 mg·L-1. The type of colorant used in the film-coated seeds of Chinese cabbage did not significantly affect the germination rate, germination speed, and seedling vigor. The seeds film-coated using the liquid colorant were superior in appearance to the seeds film-coated with the solid colorant, which implies the possibility of reduction in the manufacturing costs by using the water-soluble paints as colorants for film-coated seeds.

  • Kimchi cabbage (Chinese cabbage), radish and Cabbage are major Brassicaceae vegetables in Korea. Especially, we can easily develop whole plant from one microspore in Kimchi cabbage. To develop clubroot resistant doubled-haploid (DH) inbred lines, we pollinated a clubroot resistant turnip of 'IT 033820' with a Kimchi cabbage (Chinese cabbage) inbred of 'BP 079'. More than 85 DH inbred lines were developed from this combination. We screened about 400 materials including these DH inbred lines, commercial cultivars and breeding materials during 3 years using hydroponic system after inoculating single spore isolation race 4(SSI-04) inoculate. One inbred line derived from this combination selected as clubroot resistant and registered as 'Wonkyo20036ho'. We inoculated 26 DH inbred lines derived from 'Zoong-baek 2ho' using SSI-4, the percent of resistant plants varied from 0 to 83%. However the horticultural traits of highly resistant DH inbred line was poor. Thus we selected one DH line showing 77% resistant with yellow inner leaf and maid good head, was registered as 'Wonkyo20034ho'. Another DH inbred line derived from Korean variety of 'Wol-dong' showing 86% resistant was registered as 'Wonkyo20037ho'. Other DH inbred lines were derived from Chinese cultivar of 'Choon-hi-go-hang-wang' and 'Hwang-shim-zo48' showed 80 and 71% resistant, respectively, was also selected for registration. Even though DH inbred lines derived from turnip showed highly resistant to SSI-04 and provincial inoculate, they showed poor characteristics in horticultural traits. However, commercial seed companies showed interesting for adapting these DH inbred lines in commercial breeding.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the economic injury level (EIL) and economic threshold (ET) of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, on Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var). The changes of biomass of Chinese cabbage and M. persicae density were investigated after introduction of M. persicae at different density (0, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20 per plant; inoculated at 10d after planting). The densities of M. persicae largely increased from the above initial densities to 0, 92.3, 177.4, 406.9, 440.4, and 471.3 aphids per plant at 18d after the initial inoculation, respectively. The biomass of Chinese cabbage significantly decreased with increasing the initial inoculated density of M. persicae: 602.0, 264.2, 262.0, 109.3, 151.0, and 67.3 g in above plots with different initial densities, respectively. The relationship between cumulative aphid days (CAD) and yield loss (%) of Chinese cabbage was well described by a nonlinear logistic equation. Using the estimated equation, EIL of M. persicae on Chinese cabbage was estimated 25 CAD per plant based on the yield loss 13%, which take into account of an empirical gain threshold 5% and marketable rate 92% of spring Chinese cabbage. Also, ET was calculated at 80% of EIL: 20 aphids per plant. Until a more elaborate EIL-model is developed, the present result may be useful for M. persicae management at early growth stage of Chinese cabbage.

  • The purpose of this study was to establish a model for recommendable application level of nitrogen fertilizer based on soil testing for summer chinese cabbage in highland. A field experiment was carried out with various nitrogen application levels in sand loamy soil with and without poultry manure compost. The application level of N in poultry manure compost plot was found to be $291kg\;ha^{-1}$ for maximum yield of chinese cabbage, and it was 87% of the required N application level, $335kg\;ha^{-1}$, for maximum yield of chinese cabbage in nonmanure plot. In the treatment of poultry manure, approximately $174kg\;ha^{-1}$ of N was required to obtain the same yield of chinese cabbage as the maximum yield obtained in the treatments without poultry manure application. Therefore, with poultry manure application, N application level can be reduced by 40%. Using these results, a new equation for N recommendation for chinese cabbage in highland soil was proposed. With the average organic matter content of $33g\;kg^{-1}$ in highland field, the application levels of N for chinese cabbage were in the range of $215-129kg\;ha^{-1}$, which means that 32.8-59.7% of current application amount of N fertilizer can be reduced.

  • An experiment on the expression and dewatering of chinese cabbage was conducted in order to investigate its dewatering behavior. Chopped cabbage was packed into cylinder and pressed by piston upto the predetermined pressure on Instron-1000. The rates of dewatering were affected domintantly by the applied pressure, but not significantly by the packed amount of cabbage in the cylinder. The pressure effect was increased very abruptly at first, but the increase rate was very low at high pressure greater than 20 MPa, showing great deviation from linear dependence of flow rate on pressure in Darcy's Law. Therefore, water expression from cabbage was not Newtonian flow of water through cell wall. In fact, the squeezed water contained a lot of solid particles, about 3% of solid cabbage particles, showing destruction of cell wall. It appeared that compression and dewatering of vegetable wastes in the low pressure. under 20 MPa, is more desirable for later treatment of the dewater. More researches are needed in order to develop a treatment method for the solid particles in the expressed water before an expeller treatment system can be applied to vegetable wastes.

  • This study were comparison the quality characteristics of winter Chinese cabbage and investigation the physicochemical properties during Kimchi fermentation. External characteristics of three cultivars winter Chinese cabbage were compared, total weight of "Manpung" cultivar showed the heaviest in Chinese cabbages, but edible portion weight of "Seolwang" cultivar showed the heaviest in Chinese cabbages. Kimchi made of winter Chinese cabbage were fermented at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 40 days, of which pH, acidity, free sugar and organic acid were measured. The hardness of "Manpung" cultivar continued highly during the Kimchi fermentation at 5$^{\circ}C$. The pH and total acid in Kimchi fermentation, of the "Manpung" cultivar changed more than those of others. At the initial stage of Kimchi fermentation the major organic acid was citric acid, but lactic acid and acetic acid were increased rapidly during fermentation of Kimchi. The major organic acid of Kimchi fermented for 30 days was lactic acid, and the lactic acid contents of Kimchi prepared with "Manpung" cultivar was 6,796.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/g account for 69.6% of total organic acid.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of slow-release fertilizers on yield of chinese cabbage and spinach. Fertilizers were treated with CDU, MEISTER, Jobi Gohyungbokhapbiryo, Kyungki Wonyebokbi 1ho, kyungkibokbi Nojeok, Kyungki Jeonjakgohyungbokbi, Traditional manuring, and No manuring. Yields of chinese cabbage were increased with slow-release fertilizers, and CDU was more effective to the head than to the out-leaf, especially. Spinach was increased with slow-release fertilizers, also. However, analysis of chemical components of plants and soil were no difference. It was very effective to increase yields of chinese cabbage and spinach, to reduce in number of supplementary manuring and laboring.
