  • Recently, as deep learning technology has developed, various deep learning technologies have been introduced in handwritten recognition, greatly contributing to performance improvement. The recognition accuracy of handwritten Hangeul recognition has also improved significantly, but prior research has focused on recognizing 520 Hangul characters or 2,350 Hangul characters using SERI95 data or PE92 data. In the past, most of the expressions were possible with 2,350 Hangul characters, but as globalization progresses and information and communication technology develops, there are many cases where various foreign words need to be expressed in Hangul. In this paper, we propose a model that recognizes and combines the consonants, medial vowels, and final consonants of a Korean syllable using a multi-label classification model, and achieves a high recognition accuracy of 98.38% as a result of learning with the public data of Korean handwritten characters, PE92. In addition, this model learned only 2,350 Hangul characters, but can recognize the characters which is not included in the 2,350 Hangul characters

  • In this paper, we discussed three cases to see the effects of the characteristics of Hangul writing system. In applications such as computer Hangul shorthands for ordinary people and pushbuttons with Hangul characters engraved, we found that there is much advantage in using Hangul. In case of Hangul Transliteration, we discussed some problems which are related with the characteristics of Hangul writing system. Shorthands use 3-set keyboards in England, America, and Korea. We saw how ordinary people can do computer Hangul shorthands, whereas only experts can do computer shorthands in other countries. Specifically, the facts that 1) Hangul characters are grouped into syllables (syllabic blocks) and that 2) there is already a 3-set Hangul keyboard for ordinary people allow ordinary people to do computer Hangul shorthands without taking special training as with English shorthands. This study was done by the author under the codename of 'Sejong 89'. In contrast like QWERTY or DVORAK, a 2-set Hangul keyboard cannot be used for shorthands. In case of English pushbuttons, one digit is associated with only one character. However, by engraving only syllable-initial characters on the phone pushbuttons, we can associate one Hangul "syllable" with one digit. Therefore, for a given number of digits, we can associate longer words or more meaningful words in Hangul than in English. We discussed the problems of the Hangul Transliteration system proposed by South Korea and suggested their solutions, if available. 1) We are incorrectly using the framework of transcription for transliteration. To solve the problem, the author suggests that a) we include all complex characters in the transliteration table, and that b) we specify syllable-initial and -final characters separately in the table. 2) The proposed system cannot represent independent characters and incomplete syllables. 3) The proposed system cannot distinguish between syllable-initial and -final characters.

  • The purpose of this paper is to classify the types of input characters, printed Hangul characters, using Maximum Run Length Projection(MRLP)that is used to extract features of input character.Because the number of Hangul characters is large and its structure is complex, there exists close similarities among characters. This paper, therefore, tried to increment the type classification rate using fuzzy resoning. The Maximum Run Length Projection is very immune to noise, and also useful to extracting the demanding information efficiently. In a test case with the most frequently use 917 printed Hangul characters,it achieved 98.58%correct classification rate.

  • For the efficient teaching of Korean characters(Hangul) handwriting method, it needs to the collection of Hangul handwriting samples and the study of analysis methods. For the collection of Hangul handwriting samples, the students of teacher's university take part in this survey. The analysis is performed according to the characters and graphemes in Hangul. The analysis features include the number of strokes, the direction of handwriting, the relational position of graphemes, the height and width of characters, and so on. The results of this analysis will be used for the reference data for the teaching of Hangul handwritings, the study of Hangul fonts, and the research of Hangul information engineering.

  • This paper proposes a recognition system of constrained handwritten Hangul and alphanumeric characters using discrete hidden Markov models (HMM). HMM process encodes the distortion and similarity among patterns of a class through a doubly stochastic approach. Characterizing the statistical properties of characters using selected features, a recognition system can be implemented by absorbing possible variations in the form. Hangul shapes are classified into six types by fuzzy inference, and their recognition is performed based on quantized features by optimally ordering features according to their effectiveness in each class. The constrained alphanumerics recognition is also performed using the same features used in Hangul recognition. The forward-backward, Viterbi, and Baum-Welch reestimation algorithms are used for training and recognition of handwritten Hangul and alphanumeric characters. Simulation result shows that the proposed method recognizes handwritten Korean characters and alphanumerics effectively.

  • In this study, there is main purpose to provide useful data in order to use the Hangul as a design factor. Also, there are two subordinate goals. First, to analyze standards as people estimate Hangul characters. Second, to understand people's preferences about Hangul characters and then, to catch formal features about that characters. In first result, It is known that people estimate Hangul characters based on four standards. They are neat, soft, cyber and plain standards. As second consequence, preferential Hangul characters have pretty, intimate, refined, soil, elaborate, forthright, tidy image. And they are square shape as a whole, less decorative, round edge style.

  • Hangul is expressed by the basic elements, twenty-four characters. Because these characters are composed of a circle and lines, Hough transform(HT), which has a powerful performance on the noise in extracting lines, is introduced. Many difficulties often occur when the original HT is used to extract strokes and it's direction, position and length from handwritten Hangul characters. Original HT has eight direction selected as samples in the transformed image should be calculated for these eight directions. In this paper, the generalized sampling rule is suggested. According to the rule, those directions which are possible to a line are the only thing to be calculated. The experoment result turned out to be higher than the method that Chen suggested in sampling rate. Anogher experiment result is done on the 1800 handwritten Hangul characters that 10 persons wrote. By feature extracting the oritinal HT and sampling HT. And as a result of six type classification, the suggested method came out higher than original HT.

  • This paper describes an efficient coding method for Ko-rean characters (alphabet) using a three-state transition graph. Par-allel hangul Dynamic Coding Method (PHDCM) compresses about 3.5 bits per Korean character compared with other coding techinques. When we ran the method on a MasPar machine it achieved a 49.314-fold speedup with 64 processors having 10 million orean characters

  • This thesis proposes a new scheme for the recognition of presegmented Hangul characters. The proposed approach is rather insensitive to noise and variation by applying 2 dimensional convolution to learning patterns. In this thesis, the hangul recognition neural network is implemented in the basis of this scheme and recognition rate is analyzed in boo cases of learning which are learning by binary patterns and learning by binary patterns and convoluted patterns together.
