In modern oriental medicine, bee venom therapy is being used for aqua-acupuncture to relieve pain and to cure inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and gout. Bee venom therapy has been processed and reported in many experimental studies, with regard to its effects on pain alleviation, anti-inflammation, removal of fever, anti-convulsion, suppression of tumor and immunity strengthening, etc., however, its mechanism of action, molecular targeting on prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) production and telomere length regulation in human cancer remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of bee venom on the levels of cyclooxygenases (COXs) and telomere regulatory components of A549 human lung cancer cells. Bee venom-induced anti-proliferative effects of A549 cells were associated with the inhibition of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) as well as human telomerase RNA (hTR), transcription factor c-myc and the activity of telomerase. In addition, bee venom treatment markedly decreased the levels of COX-2 mRNA and protein expression without significant changes in the expression of COX-1, which was correlated with a decrease in $PGE_2$ synthesis. Taken together, these findings provide important new insights into the possible molecular mechanisms of the anti-cancer activity of bee venom.
In order to study Bee venom and Pain, We searched Journals and Internet. The results were as follows: 1. The domestic papers were total 13. 4 papers were published at The journal of korean acupuncture & moxibustion society, 3 papers were published at The journal of korean oriental medical society, Each The journal of KyoungHee University Oriental Medicine and The journal of korean sports oriental medical society published 1 papers and Unpublished desertations were 3. The clinical studies were 4 and the experimental studies were 9. 2. The domestic clinical studies reported that Bee venom Herbal Acupuncture therapy was effective on HIVD, Subacute arthritis of Knee Joint and Sequale of sprain. In the domestic experimental studies, 5 were related to analgesic effect of Bee vnom and 4 were related to mechanism of analgesia. 3. The journals searched by PubMed were total 18. 5 papers were published at Pain, Each 2 papers were published at Neurosci Lett. and Br J Pharmacol, and Each Eur J Pain, J Rheumatol, Brain Res, Neuroscience, Nature and Toxicon et al published 1 paper. 4. In the journals searched by PubMed, Only the experimental studies were existed. 8 papers used Bee Venom as pain induction substance and 1 paper was related to analgesic effects of Bee venom. 5. 15 webpage were searched by internet related to Bee Venom and pain. 11 were the introduction related to arthritis, 1 was the advertisement, 1 was the patient's experience, 1 was the case report on RA, 1 was review article.
We experienced a patient(53-year-old female) with knee joint effusion, pain and stiffness who had not responded to steroid injection therapy, significantly improved by bee venom acupuncture in clinical symptom. And for a opinion that prohibited bee venom acupuncture on DM because of increasing serum glucose level by increasing serum cortisol level, we also experienced that serum glucose level of DM patient stabilized by bee Venom acupuncture treatments, so we report this case with literature review of articles.
A 6-year-old, castrated male Shih-tzu dog was presented due to left side facial paralysis with head tilt. Neurological examination revealed absence of facial sensation, menance response, and palpebral reflex on the left side. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intracranial intra-arachnoid cyst (IIAC) was noted. The dog was poor response to steroid and dieuretic therapy. Based on characteristic historical and clinical findings, and excluding of other causes of acute facial nerve dysfunction, the dog was tentatively diagnosed as idiopathic facial paralysis. The clinical signs were improved gradually after acupuncture therapy with bee venom. Eight weeks after initial acupuncture with bee venom, the patient recovered sensory and neurological facial signs. This case report demonstrates that bee venom acupuncture for an idiopathic facial paralysis could be useful in a dog.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of HWANGRYUNHAEDOKTANG Pharmacopuncture and Essential Bee Venom pharmacopuncture on cervical pain caused by traffic accident. Methods The clincal study was conducted to traffic accident patients who had admitted to Dae-Jeon University Cheonan Oriental Hospital from May 17, 2014 to September 2, 2014. The patients were simple randomization and divided into two groups. In one group, patients were treated with the oriental medicine and HWANGRYUNHAEDOKTANG Pharmacopuncture, While in the other group, patients were treated with the oriental medicine therapy and Essential Bee Venom pharmacopuncture therapy. visual analogue scale (VAS), pain threshold and neck disablity index (NDI) were used To estimate the efficacy of Pharmacopuncture treatment. Results 1) HWANGRYUNHAEDOKTANG Pharmacopuncture Group showed significant decrease of VAS and NDI after 3rd times treatment than before treatment (p<0.001). Essential Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture showed significant decrease of VAS, NDI and improve ment of pain threshold after 3rd times treatment than before treatment (p<0.01, p<0.001). 2) There was no significant difference between HWANGRYUNHAEDOKTANG Pharmacopuncture group and Essential Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture group in VAS, pain threshold and NDI. Conclusions We found out that HWANGRYUNHAEDOKTANG Pharmacopuncture and Essential Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture treatment are considered to be effective and useful in cervical pain caused by traffic accident.
Objectives: Bee venom (BV) therapy is performed by a bee sting or subcutaneous injection of BV. However, there is not much information on the effect of BV on blood parameters after entering the body. This project aimed to assess the side effects of subcutaneous BV injections in healthy rats by measuring the hematological and biochemical parameters. Methods: Various amounts of BV, including 100, 200, and 500 (㎍/day), were subcutaneously injected into rats for 30 days. The results showed that BV affected the metabolism of the liver, kidney, and glands. Results: An increase in blood sugar and a decrease in other biochemical parameters, including cholesterol, triglyceride, urea, creatinine AST, ALT, ALP, and phosphorous, were observed. Results also showed increased counts of white blood cells, neutrophils (%), and platelets and decreased levels of red cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that BV therapy in medical clinics requires routine care and testing to prevent eventual metabolic and anemia side effects.
Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy in patients with FBSS(failed back surgery syndrome). Methods : We investigated 30 cases of patients with FBSS, who had been treated from October 2010 to July 2011. We divided patients into two groups : group I was treated by acupuncture therapy only, and group II was treated by bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy and general acupuncture. We measured the efficacy of treatments using the numerical rating scale(NRS) and grade and straight leg raising(SLR) test. Results : 1. The treatment method for group II was more effective than that of group I in reducing the NRS score on the fifteenth day after admission but there was no statistically significant difference between the results of two groups on the fifth day after admission and the tenth day after admission. 2. The treatment method for group II was more effective than that of group I in NRS improvement rate from its admission day to the fifth day after admission and from the tenth day after admission to the fifteenth day after admission but there was no statistically significant difference between the performance of two groups from the fifth day after admission to the tenth day after admission. 3. Group II had a higher grade improvement rate from the seventh day after admission to the fifteenth day after admission than group I but no statistically significant difference was observed between the results of two groups from its admission day to the seventh day after admission. 4. In SLR test improvement rate the treatments applied to group II was more effective than those applied to group I. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy is effective in reducing pain for patients with FBSS. Further clinical research is needed to verify these results and findings.
