  • The inhibitory potentials of TCAs (imipramine, desipramine, amitriptyline, and nortriptyline) on phenytoin p-hydroxylation and probe metabolic pathways of each CYP isoforms were evaluated from incubation studies of human liver microsomes and cDNA-expressed cytochrome P450s in vitro in order to understand the mechanism of drug interaction between TCAs and phenytoin, a substrate of CYP2C9 and CYP2C19. Study on the MED of Koreans (한국인의 최소홍반량에 관한 연구)

  • The dosal sites of 61 Koreans were exposed to increasing UVB doses in the 10mJ/$\textrm{cm}^2$ interval from 10mJ/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 100mJ/$\textrm{cm}^2$ by solar-simulator, and at the 24hr after UV-B exposure we determined the first MED (Minimal Erythema Dose). For the precise measurements, we peformed the second exposures arround the first MED with 2.5mJ/$\textrm{cm}^2$ interval. The mean MED of all volunteers was 39.6 $\pm$ 15.7mJ/$\textrm{cm}^2$. As the distinction of sex, the means of male and female were 46.9 $\pm$ 18.1mJ/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 31.5$\pm$8.5mJ/$\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively. According to the classification of skin type by Greiter. F.(1), the percent of skin type I to Ⅵ were 10.9%, 36.4%, 34.6%, 12.7%, 3.6%, and 1.8% respectively.

Discovery of Argyrin-Producing Archangium gephyra MEHO_001 and Identification of Its Argyrin Biosynthetic Genes

  • Argyrins are a group of anticancer and antibacterial octapeptide bioactive substances isolated from myxobacteria. In this study, we showed that the myxobacterium Archangium gephyra MEHO_001, isolated in Korea, produces argyrins A and B. MEHO_001 cells tend to aggregate when cultured in liquid media. Hence, a dispersion mutant, MEHO_002, was isolated from MEHO_001. The MEHO_002 strain produced approximately 3.5 times more argyrins than that produced by the wild-type strain MEHO_001. We determined the whole-genome sequence of A. gephyra MEHO_002 and identified a putative argyrin biosynthetic gene cluster comprising five genes, arg1-arg5, encoding non-ribosomal peptide synthases and tailoring enzymes. Inactivation of arg2 by plasmid insertion disrupted argyrin production. The amino acid sequences of the proteins encoded by arg2-arg5 of A. gephyra MEHO_002 were 90-98% similar to those encoded by the argyrin biosynthetic genes of Cystobacter sp. SBCb004, an argyrin-producing myxobacterium with identical domain organization.

A Study on the Retrieval Effectiveness of KoreaMed using MeSH Search Filter and Word-Proximity Search (검색용 MeSH 필터와 단어인접탐색 기법을 활용한 KoreaMed 검색 효율성 향상 연구)

  • This study examined the method for adding related to "stomach neoplasms" as filters to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for search as well as a method for improving the search efficiency through a word-proximity search by measuring the distance of co-occurring terms. A total of 8,625 articles published between 2007 and 2016 with the major topic terms "stomach neoplasms" were downloaded from PubMed article titles. The vocabulary to be added to the MeSH for search were analyzed. The search efficiency was verified by 277 articles that had "Stomach Neoplasms" indexed as MEDLINE MeSH in KoreaMed. As a result, 973 terms were selected as the candidate vocabulary. "Gastric Cancer" (2,780 appearances) was the most frequent term and 7,376 compound words (88.51%) combined the histological terms of "stomach" and "neoplasm", such as "gastric adenocarcinoma" and "gastric MALT lymphoma". A total of 5,234 compounds words (70.95%), in which the co-occurring distance was two words, were found. The matching rate through the MEDLINE MeSH and KoreaMed MeSH Indexer was 209 articles (75.5%). The search efficiency improved to 263 articles (94.9%) when the search filters were added, and to 268 articles (96.7%) when the 13 word-proximity search technique of the co-occurring terms was applied. This study showed that the use of a thesaurus as a means of improving the search efficiency in a natural language search could maintain the advantages of controlled vocabulary. The search accuracy can be improved using the word-proximity search instead of a Boolean search.

RepWeb: A Web-Based Search Tool for Repeat-Related Literatures

  • Repetitive sequences such as SINE, LINE, and LTR elements form a major part of eukaryotic genomes. A literature search tool that summarizes the information contained within repeat elements would provide biologists in the field of genomics with a useful tool for analyzing genomic sequence features. We developed a java program designed to make literature access easier by using two search engines simultaneously. RepWeb is a web-based search system that provides a user friendly interface for searching the reference data and journals for information related to repeat elements by using the search engines, Google Scholar and PubMed, simultaneously. It provides an interface that displays the repeat element- related biological information, and includes useful functions such as the production of a repeat tree, clickable links to PubMed and Google Scholar, exporting, and sorting a field into date, author, journal and title.

A Study on exposure-Worker to Formaldehyde in the Endoscopy Unit of Hospitals (일부 종합병원 내시경실 근무자의 포름알데히드 노출에 관한 연구)

  • To identify relationship between the airborne concentrations of formaldehyde and the causal factors in the endoscope unit of hospitals, a total of 48 workers selected from 4 hospitals (3 university hospitals and 1 national hospital) were investigated. Airborne formaldehyde samples were collected using passive samplers and subsequently analyzed by HPLC according to the OSHA method 1007. The geometric mean(GM) of airborne formaldehyde concentrations was 0.056 ppm (range: 0.003~0.923 ppm). The rates of exceeding exposure limits of OSHA PEL-TWA and NIOSH REL-TWA were 4.2 % and 83.3%, respectively. The STEL GM concentration was 1.428 ppm(range: 0.103~14.773 ppm). Ventilation condition (p=0.001) and temperature (p=0.017) were statistically significant causal factors for the airborne exposure concentration of formaldehyde in the endoscope unit of hospitals. In conclusion, the workers in the endoscope unit of hospitals were highly exposed to formaldehyde, and adequate controls such as appropriate management of ventilation and temperature are recommended to reduce over exposure to formaldehyde.

Quantification of the Effect of Medication and Deep Brain Stimulation on Parkinsonian Rigidity (파킨슨병 환자의 경직에 대한 약물과 DBS 의 효과의 정량화)

  • This study aims to quantify the effects of medication (Med) and deep brain stimulation (DBS) on resting rigidity in patients with Parkinson's disease. We tested 10 limbs of five patients under each of four treatment conditions: 1) baseline, 2) DBS, 3) Med, 4) DBS + Med. Rigidity at the wrist joint was assessed using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). The examiner randomly imposed flexion and extension movement on patient's wrist joint. Resistance to passive movement was quantified by viscoelastic properties. Not only rigidity score but also damping constant showed improvements in rigidity by DBS and Med treatments (p<0.05). This indicates that the viscosity can represent the change in rigidity due to DBS as well as Med, which was manifested by UPDRS score.
