  • Purpose: This study was conducted to compare and analyze the smoking-related social-ecological factors affecting attempts to quit smoking by adolescents using tobacco cigarettes only and also those adolescents using tobacco cigarettes along with electronic cigarettes. Methods: This study, as secondary analysis research, used the raw data from the 14th Korea youth risk behavior survey 2018. The data was analyzed by frequency analysis, the Rao-scott χ2-test and logistic regression analysis when considering the complex sample's analysis. Results: On logistic regression analysis, during their first smoking period, intense physical activities and having friends who smoked were associated with significantly more attempts to quit smoking by cigarettes smokers, and their first smoking period and experiences of undergoing smoking cessation education were associated with significantly more attempts to quit smoking for dual smokers of both tobacco cigarettes and electronic ones. Conclusion: As a result of this study, we identified the need to differentiate different types of smoking cessation counseling and education according to the types of smoking in adolescents.

  • This study aimed to investigate gender differences in prevalence and correlates of depression and suicidal ideation among Korean adolescents. The analysis was performed using data from the 2009 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Logistic regression models and Wald chi-square statistics were used to identify the difference in the coefficients between the gender-specific models. Female students reported higher prevalence for depression(42.9%) than male students(31.4%), as well as higher level of suicidal ideation(girls:23.1%, boys:14.7%). Lower school achievement, worse self-rated health status, more conflicts were associated with higher level of depression and suicidal ideation. The impact of school achievement and conflicts with friends on mental health was greater among girls than boys. We suggest that the efficient strategies focusing on the gender differences should be established to improve mental health among Korean adolescents.

  • Purpose: We aimed to identify associations between the frequency of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and smoking-related characteristics among adolescent smokers. Methods: We used data from the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The participants were 3,722 smokers who had smoked cigarettes on at least one day during the past 30 days. The frequency of e-cigarette use was defined as the number of days that participants used e-cigarettes during the past 30 days, and was divided into four categories: 0, 1~2, 3~9, and ${\geq}10$ days. We used the $x^2$ test and multinomial logistic regression to examine the associations between the frequency of e-cigarette use and smoking-related characteristics. Results: Those who attempted to quit smoking, had used a heated tobacco product (HTP) at least once, or initiated e-cigarette use before middle school were more likely to use e-cigarettes for 3~9 days in the past 30 days. More frequent e-cigarette use (${\geq}10$ days) was associated with a higher frequency and greater amount of cigarette use, lifetime HTP use, and earlier initiation of e-cigarette use. Conclusion: Smoking-related characteristics differed by the frequency of e-cigarette use. Therefore, intervention programs targeting adolescent smokers should consider differences in smoking-related characteristics based on the frequency of e-cigarette use.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of physical activity on suicidal ideation according to gender in South Korean adolescents. Methods: This study is designed as a cross-sectional study. Using the statistics from the 12th (2016) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was conducted. The study sample comprised 62,558 middle and high school students aged primarily 12 to 17. Results: The rate of engaging in physical activity more than three times a week was 39.6% for boys and 28.8% for girls and the rate of suicide ideation was 9.35% for boys and 14.9% for girls. Male students were 1.42 times more likely to commit suicide when they did not engage in physical activity than when they do more than three times a week but it was found to have no significant effect on female students. Conclusion: Physical activity should be encouraged in the physical education curriculum and the school health area to reduce suicidal ideation in adolescents. Differentiated interventions are required according to gender. It is suggested that intervention programs involving physical activity be implemented more actively for male students and intervention programs centering on obesity and smoking prevention be implemented for female students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between physical activity and energy drinks consumption in Korean Adolescents. Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis using statistics from the 2017(13th) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The variables used in the study were physical activity, energy drinks consumption and socio-demographic characteristics such as gender, academic achievement, household economic status and weekly allowance. The data were analyzed by $x^2$ test and multinominal logistic regression and the results were presented in percentage. Results: As the number of days engaging in moderate and vigorous physical activities increased, the response that they consume energy drinks 'more than 5 times a week' also increased. The subjects who participated in a 'moderate' or 'high' level of moderate physical activity consumed 1.4 times more energy drinks than those who do not participate in physical activity. And the subjects who engaged in a 'low' or 'moderate' level of vigorous physical activity consumed about 1.3 times more energy drinks than those who don't work out. Conclusion: As the level and intensity of physical activity increased, the number and frequency of energy drinks consumption increased. The results of this study can be used as basic data for intervention programs to reduce energy drinks consumption and promote proper physical activity.

  • Purpose: This study investigated sleep satisfaction and influencing factors in Korean adolescents with atopic dermatitis. Methods: Data were obtained from 4,570 subjects who completed the 2017 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and multiple-sample logistic regression were used. Results: The results of this study were as follows. Gender, academic achievement, economic status, perceived stress, happiness, health status, and depression in the subjects showed a significant difference in terms of sleep satisfaction in atopic adolescents. Multiple-sample logistic regression analysis showed that male adolescents (odds ratio (OR)=0.48), academic achievement (low OR=0.67, middle OR=0.78), economic status (low OR=0.50, middle OR=0.64), lack of depression (OR=0.63), perceived stress (very OR=4.65, a little OR=2.25), perceived happiness (unhappy OR=1.99, moderate OR=1.22), perceived health status (unhealthy OR=2.17, ordinary OR=1.35), alcohol nondrinking (OR=0.75), and nonsmoking (OR=0.73) were not associated with sleep satisfaction. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop interventions that can relieve stress management and depression and develop positive emotions in atopic adolescents. In addition, there is a need to improve the environment to avoid health risks such as alcohol consumption and smoking and to minimize the effects of passive smoking.

  • Background: Despite social gradients in adult smoking, the effects of socioeconomic position (SEP) on adolescent smoking is not well understood. This study examined effects of subjective SEP as well as the objective SEP on smoking among Korean adolescents. Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from the 2012 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, a nationally representative sample of middle and high school students (38,221 boys; 35,965 girls). SEP was assessed by the Family Affluence Scale (FAS) and the self-rated household economic status. Relationships between SEP and smoking were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Results: The low perceived SEP for either the high or low FAS grade was related to an elevated likelihood of smoking in both genders. A significantly higher risk of smoking was found in boys of low perceived SEP in middle school (odds ratio [OR] 1.50; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.28-1.77 for high FAS, OR 1.55; 95% CI 1.21-1.98 for low FAS), and of low perceived SEP and high FAS in high school (OR 1.13; 95% CI 1.02-1.26). Among girls, an elevated risk of smoking was observed in middle school group with low perceived SEP and low FAS (OR 2.01; 95% CI 1.44-2.79) and in the high school group of low perceived SEP, regardless of FAS level (OR 1.34; 95% CI 1.14-1.57 for high FAS, OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.04-1.65 for low FAS). Conclusions: The relationship of subjectively perceived SEP with smoking is as important as objective SEP and more significant in Korean high school adolescents.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between demographic factors and oral health factors and mental health factors in Korean adolescents. Methods: The study was based on the 11th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (2015). The final participation rate in the survey was 96.7%. of a total of 70.362 adolescents (age, 12~18 years) who had participated in the survey, 68,043 adolescents were selected for analysis. Results:As a result of examining the stress awareness of adolescents and the experience of oral disease symptoms, it was found that the number of brushing times per day was less than 1 time (p<0.001), tingling and throbbing (p<0.001), gum pain & blood (p<0.001) and bad breath (p<0.001) were more stressed than those who had experience. On the other hand, the lack of experience in oral health education was more stressful (p<0.001). As a result of examining the factors influencing subjective happiness, it was found that the female, the lower the grade, the higher the academic performance and economic level, the less experience of oral disease in the last one year, The level of awareness was high. Conclusions: These results indicate that the demographic factors, mental health factors, and oral health factors of adolescents are correlated to one another. Therefore, when developing a program for promoting adolescent health or establishing a national business plan, it should be considered in a multi-faceted way.
