Volcanic Caves in Jeju (제주도의 화산동굴)

  • Jeju Island is formed by lava flow streams with the Mt. Halla in the center. The Mt. Halla‘s crater or other parasitic volcano produced lava flows creating lava plateau in this area. There are one thousand volcano caves in the world, and 50% of them are located in the west coast of United States. There are 186 volcano caves in Italy, 100 in Mt. Fuji, Japan, and 70 in Jeju Island. Jeju Island‘s east-west axis four sides are world-renown volcano zones with basalt strata that feature low viscosity and fluidity.

A Experimental Study on Void Ration at Initiating Consolidation for Fine-Grained Soils in Korea (국내 세립토의 압밀개시 간극비에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • For fine grained soils of 10 samples around coast areas in Korea, classified into three regions of West Coast, Kyungnam and Jeonnam, settling-consolidation tests of 161 were performed to evaluate characteristics of sedimentation and consolidation during dredging and reclamation and characteristic values proposed from Yano's method (1985) were used to analyze and assess their characteristics in this research. The settling-consolidation tests with columns of 1m in height were performed, changing initial water content and initial height of slurry, for 4, 3, and 3 samples from regions of West Coast, Kyungnam, and Jeonnam respectively. From test results effect of initial water content on coefficient of consolidation-sedimentation and initial velocity of sedimentation were analyzed, and regression equations having correlation between them were derived. The void ratios at initiating consolidation were analyzed on each samples and suggested regression equations for three regions. In addition, as a result of analyzing relation between initial void ratio of slurry and void ratio at initiating selfweight consolidation, expected ranges of void ratio at initiating consolidation for fine-grained soils from three regions of Korea coast could be proposed.

The Effect of Fault Failure with Time Difference on the Runup Height of East Coast of Korea (시간차를 지닌 단층파괴 활동이 동해안 처오름 높이에 미치는 영향)

  • The fault failure process with time difference affects the initial generation of waveforms of tsunamis, which consequently changes the runup height on the coast. To examine the effect of time difference in fault failure process on the runup height, a numerical simulation was conducted assuming a number of virtual subsea earthquakes in the west coast of Japan. Results revealed that maximum runup heights along the east coast of Korea were minimal when the subfaults were aligned parallel with the shoreline. Meanwhile, if they were located perpendicular to the shoreline, the superposition effect of the initial surface by each subfault was noticeable, resulting in an increase in maximum runup height on the coast.

Quantifying of the Persistent Periods of the Positive and Negative Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies at the Coastal Areas of the Korean Peninsula (한국연안 이상고수온과 저수온의 지속성 기간의 정량화)

  • The magnitudes of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies at 13 coastal stations along the Korean peninsula in the summer and winter for the past 29years (1969-1997) are more larger than those in the spring and autumn. The periods of positive SST anomalies (negative SST anomalies) longer than 1$^{\circ}C$ were 75(74.5) months in the eastern coast of Korea, 47.8(51.6) months in the southern coast of Korea and 69.5(69.8) months in the western coast of Korea during the past 348 months (1969-1997). The predominant periods of the low-pass filtered monthly SST anomalies are 3 years or 13 months, even another predominant period is 24 months. The spatial variation of SST anomalies were confined by regional seas of the Korean peninsula, such as the East Sea, the South Sea and the West Sea itself.

Summer Algal Flora of Gojeong-Ri, West Coast of Korea (충남 고정리의 하계 해조상)

  • The marine benthic algae of Gojeong-Ri was investigated in a floristic aspect. As a result, 34 species, 7 blue-green, 14 red, 6 brown and 7 green algae were identified as a summer flora from the area. Among them, Sirocoleum kurzii (blue-green alga), Ralfsia clavata (brown alga), Pseudulvella consociata and Cladophora speciosa (green algae) were known as new records to Korea.
