  • Allergic diseases as the major symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome have significantly increased because of the indoor pollutants resulted from the enhanced energy conservation performances of residential buildings. Following traffic accidents, domestic accidents are known as the second most frequent accident type. This study analyzes the occurrences of allergic diseases and home accidents caused by housing conditions, together with the residents' consciousness of the diseases and accidents. The findings of this study are expected to help develop the design guidelines and new housing types conducive to the healthy housing environment. For this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted in two rounds which include face-to-face questionnaire survey and online survey, collecting 200 responses and 1000 responses respectively. The data based on the valid 1011 responses were analyzed by Frequency Analysis and T-test.

In this study, the difference of residential satisfaction, moving plan, and residential service according to the type of the public rental housing and the characteristics of the resident is analyzed to identify their housing demands. As a result, there were differences in residential satisfaction, moving plan, and residential service depending on type of public rental housing and characteristics of residents. Residents in public rental housing modified from the multi-family housing after purchase showed lower residential satisfaction, and higher intention for moving plan compared to residents living in other type of public rental housing. In the residential service, residents in permanent lease type have higher experience of housing service as well as demand on housing service. Especially single household, elderly household, female household, or household with handicapped person indicated higher demand for housing services.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore housing value clusters of young renters in South Korea and their relationships to household and housing characteristics reflected in the 2012 Korea Housing Survey (KHS). The 2012 KHS microdata was used as secondary data. Among the households included in the microdata, 1,196,144 young renter households (between 20 and 34 years of age) in private rental units were analyzed. The main findings are as follows. Ten rating scale items measured housing values. Eight of them were grouped into three value factors: Investment, Affordability and Cost Increase. Using these three value factors and perception of homeownership, households were classified into four clusters: Prospective Home Investor, Settled Renter, Homeowner Wannabe, and Support Needed. The current tenure types, income and expectation for next tenure types of four housing value clusters of young renters reflected Korea's tenure ladder which has home ownership at top followed by Jeon-se rental, monthly rental with deposit and monthly rental without deposit. The households in Prospective Home Investor and Homeowner Wannabe clusters would consider home purchase in the near future. Finally, households in Support Needed Cluster would be the main target to consider in development and implementation of housing welfare policies and programs to resolve housing problems of young renters, including beginning-stage professionals.

  • Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) techniques have been developed to provide a means for evaluating occupant responses to changes in an environment and linking this response to physical measures of that environment. POE has been used to systematically evaluate the performance of buildings after they have been built and occupied for some time. This paper present findings on factors (social and physical), which influences housing residential satisfaction of a sample of occupants in four different government Housing Subsidy locations in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Descriptive statistics were carried out on the data obtained through the use of occupant survey. Findings emanating from the survey revealed that the respondents were satisfied with their overall housing situation, but had complaints about certain aspects of the housing unit. However, the respondents felt that most of their housing needs were not being met. Also, a comparison is also made of the perceived factors of dissatisfaction amongst the housing subsidy occupants. It is recommended that a wider systematic coverage of the subject through investigation and diagnostic POE and occupants need assessment should be carried in housing subsidy schemes in South Africa.

From the visitors to a model wood-framed house in Seoul, Korea, 296 persons willing to live in a wood-framed house were selected as the sample for the study. Data were collected using a self-administered survey and analyzed by frequency distribution, factor analysis, chi-square test, t-test, and one-way analysis of variance procedures. The results of the study Indicated that among seven factors based on 32 housing characteristics, Factor 2 - "floor plan and Interior environment" was the major variable which showed significant difference by selected demographic characteristics. Regarding the differences in wood-framed housing related characteristics by demographic characteristics, age, gender, education, and family life cycle showed group differences. • Aging is accompanied with numerous transitions in life, and residential environment becomes a pivotal part of the elderly's lives. Physically supportive housing linked with services emerges in midst of the reality that retrofitting housing with special features has been seriously underfunded. The purpose of this study was to examine the residential satisfaction of the elderly in two types of independent living arrangements specially designed for the elderly. The indices of residential supportiveness were developed, and the questionnaire survey was adopted for data collection. Two hundred eighty residents living in two different kinds of senior housing participated in the survey, and all the collected responses were used for data analysis. The finding showed that almost all of the elderly positively assessed their senior living. That is, the statistical analysis illustrated that satisfaction indices of senior living significantly and positively contributed the satisfaction with overall residential environment. Satisfaction with physical environment was the only strong predictor in explaining current residential satisfaction of the elderly in senior rental housing, and accounted for a small proportion of the variance in the dependent variable. Since affordability was the biggest concern among residents in senior housing, it was of significance that long-term housing affordability was ensured and reduction in service cost by utilizing economies of scale was pursued.

  • In contemporary housing design, this cultural value has been ignored. Contemporary design has adapted quickly to global trends and houses have gradually lost their cultural identity (GhaffarianHoseini & Dahlan, 2012; Lim, 2001). Nevertheless, traditional housing culture persists in people's behavior and thoughts. Therefore, there is currently a pressing need to rebuild cultural identity in housing for cultural sustainability. This study aimed to analyze the traditional culture which was maintained, then transformed and disappeared in housing design through the quantitative survey and explore the cultural identity of Malaysian housing as a result. A quantitative survey was distributed to mothers of 129 married households living in a metropolitan area of Kuala Lumpur in August 2019. As a result, it was found that hosting guest was important even though the designated space (serambi) was disappeared. The LD/K layout, separating kitchen from living and dining area was philosophical and practical culture, still strong among older generation, but weakened among younger generation. To accommodate the traditional habit of diverse household work, wet kitchen, utility space for washing machine & drying, and outdoor space were needed to design carefully. When applied to future housing design, the findings will contribute to enhancing quality of life by strengthening residents' sense of place and social cohesion and by providing a culturally inherent design that eases the effects of globalization.
