SUN INCIDENCE ANGLE ANALYSIS OF KOMPSTAT-2 PAYLOAD DURING NORMAL MISSION OPERATIONS (정상 임무운용 상태에서 다목적실용위성 2호 탑재체에 대한 태양 입사각 분석)

  • KOMPSAT-2 will carry MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) which provides 1m resolution panchromatic and 4m resolution multi-spectral images at the altitude of 685km sun-synchronous mission orbit. The mission operation of KOMSPAT-2 is to provide the earth observation using MSC with nadir pointing. KOMPSAT-2 will also have the capability of roll/pitch tilt maneuver using reaction wheel of satellite as required. In order to protect MSC from thermal distortion as well as direct sunlight, MSC shall be operated within the constraint of sun incidence angle. It is expected that the sunlight will not violate the constraint of sun incidence angle for normal mission operations without roll/pitch maneuver. However, during roll/pitch tilt operations, optical module of MSC may be damaged by the sunlight. This study analyzed sun incidence angle of payload using KOMPSAT-2 AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystem) Design and Performance Analysis Soft ware for KOMPSAT-2 normal mission operations.

The Effect Analysis of Compression Method on KOMPSAT Image Chain

  • Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) on the KOMPSAT-2 satellite was developed and launched as a main payload to provide 1m of GSD(Ground Sampling Distance) for one(1) channel panchromatic imaging and 4m of GSD for four(4) channel multi-spectral imaging at 685km altitude covering l5km of swath width. Since the compression on MSC image chain was required to overcome the mismatch between input data rate and output date rate JPEG-like method was selected and analyzed to check the influence on the performance. In normal operation the MSC data is being acquired and transmitted with lossy compression ratio to cover whole image channel and full swath width in real-time. In the other hand the MSC performance have carefully been handled to avoid or minimize any degradation so that it was analyzed and restored in KGS(KOMPSAT Ground Station) during LEOP(Launch and Early Operation Phase). While KOMPSAT-2 had been developed, new compression method based upon wavelet for space application was introduced and available for next satellite. The study on improvement of image chain including new compression method is asked for next KOMPSAT which requires better GSD and larger swath width In this paper, satellite image chain which consists of on-board image chain and on-ground image chain including general MSC description is briefly described. The performance influences on the image chain between two on-board compression methods which are or will be used for KOMPSAT are analyzed. The differences on performance between two methods are compared and the better solution for the performance improvement of image chain on KOMPSAT is suggested.

  • Usual satellite design adopts hardware Error Detection and Correction (EDAC) circuitary for memory elements to endure proper operation in space radiation environment and periodic read-back(scrubbing) scheme to remove errors occurred and to prevent further accumulation of errors, in parallel, But lack of detail radiation test data upset rates of KOMPSAT-2 mass storage was estimated very worse compared to that of KOMPSAT-1, which was evaluated from very precise radiation test. Although upset rates were evaluated enough low to accommodate by KOMPSAT-2 Flight Software, hardware scrubbing scheme is studied to shorten scrubbing time as well. This paper describes hardware scrubbing architecture having minimum 1.88 minutes scrubbing interval over 1 Gbits memory.

Land-Cover Classification of Barton Peninsular around King Sejong station located in the Antarctic using KOMPSAT-2 Satellite Imagery (KOMPSAT-2 위성 영상을 이용한 남극 세종기지 주변 바톤반도의 토지피복분류)

  • Baton Peninsula, where Sejong station is located, mainly covered with snow and vegetation. Because this area is sensitive to climate change, monitoring of surface variation is important to understand climate change on the polar region. Due to the inaccessibility, the remote sensing is useful to continuously monitor the area. The objectives of this research are 1) map classification of land-cover types in the Barton Peninsular around King Sejong station and 2) grasp distribution of vegetation species in classified area. A KOMPSAT-2 multispectral satellite image was used to classify land-cover types and vegetation species. We performed classification with hierarchical procedure using KOMPSAT-2 satellite image and ground reference data, and the result is evaluated for accuracy as well. As the results, vegetation and non-vegetation were clearly classified although species shown lower accuracies within vegetation class.

Current Status of Application of KOMPSAT Series (최근 다목적실용위성 시리즈 활용 현황)

  • It has been more than 20 years since the launch of KOMPSAT-1, and so far, a total of 5 satellites have been successfully launched. Until now, KOMPSAT has been used in various fields, including the production of various thematic maps, land change, environmental analysis, and marine monitoring. Many researchers have conducted research to process, analyze, and utilize KOMPSAT images. According to the national space development plan, the KOMPSAT series will be continuously developed to meet the demand for satellite images at the national level. If the ultimate purpose of satellite development is to utilize acquired images, systematic research to effectively utilize the developed satellites should be followed. This special issue introduces the recently conducted research on the use of KOMPSAT images.

APPLICABLE TRACKING DATA ARCS FOR NORAD TLE ORBIT DETERMINATION OF THE KOMPSAT-1 SATELLITE USING GPS NAVIGATION SOLUTIONS

  • NORAD Two Line Element (TLE) is very useful to simplify the ground station antenna pointing and mission operations. When a satellite operations facility has the capability to determine NORAD type TLE which is independent of NORAD, it is important to analyze the applicable tracking data arcs for obtaining the best possible orbit. The applicable tracking data arcs for NORAD independent TLE orbit determination of the KOMPSAT-1 using GPS navigation solutions was analyzed for the best possible orbit determination and propagation results. Data spans of the GPS navigation solutions from 1 day to 5 days were used for TLE orbit determination and the results were used as Initial orbit for SGP4 orbit propagation. The operational orbit determination results using KOMPSAT-1 Mission Analysis and Planning System(MAPS) were used as references for the comparisons. The best-matched orbit determination was obtained when 3 days of GPS navigation solutions were used. The resulting 4 days of orbit propagation results were within 2 km of the KOMPSAI-1 MAPS results.

Detecting Land Cover Change in an Urban Area by Image Differencing and Image Ratioing Techniques (영상의 차연산과 비연산 기법에 의한 도시지역의 토지피복 변화탐지)

  • This study presents the application of aerial photographs and the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite, KOMPSAT-1 Electro-Optical Camera(EOC) imagery in detecting change in an urban area that has been rapidly growing. For the study, we used multi-temporal images which were acquired by two different sensors. Image registration and resampling were rallied out before performing change detection in a common reference system with the same spatial resolution. for all of the images. Results from image differencing and image ratioing techniques show that panchromatic aerial photographs and KOMPSAT-1 EOC images collected by different sensors have potential to detect changes of urban features such as building, road and other man-made structure. And the optimal threshold values were suggested in applying image differencing and image ratioing techniques for change detection.

DEM Generation and Accuracy Comparison from Multiple Kompsat-2 Images (다중 Kompsat-2 영상으로부터 생성된 DEM 정확도 분석)

  • Accurate DEM(Digital Elevation Model) generation using satellite images is an active research topic. This paper focuses on generation of a DEM with multiple Kompsat-2 images. For DEM generation, we applied an orbit-attitude sensor model and a RPM sensor model to stereo and multiple Kompsat-2 images respectively. For matching, we used an object-space based matching method. Through the result of this experiment, we could confirm that the sensor model from multiple images is more accurate than the model from stereo images. Also DEM from multiple images gave much better performance than DEM from stereo images.

Analysis of Collision Avoidance Maneuver Frequency for the KOMPSAT-2 and the KOMPSAT-5 (아리랑위성 2호, 5호의 우주파편 충돌회피기동 주기 분석)

  • In this paper, a collision avoidance maneuver frequency for the KOMPSAT-2 and the KOMPSAT-5 is analyzed. For the statistical prediction of the avoidance maneuver frequency, mission orbits, responsive time, accepted collision probabilities, and positional uncertainties of primary and secondary objects are considered. In addition, the collision avoidance maneuver frequency of the KOMPSAT-2 is compared to the case that NORAD catalog during one year is used to calculate that of the KOMPSAT-2. As a result, the collision avoidance maneuver frequency is one per year on average and effective factors on the statistical prediction of the avoidance maneuver frequency are investigated. Efforts to improve its prediction accuracy are also discussed.

Aircraft Velocity and Altitude Estimation through Time Offset Calculation of KOMPSAT-3 Satellite (KOMPSAT-3 위성의 Time Offset 계산을 통한 항공기 속력 및 고도 추정)

  • In this study, a method of estimating the velocity and altitude of aircrafts photographed in a KOMPSAT-3 satellite was proposed. In the proposed method, parallax effect, which is a time offset between bands due to the photographing method of the KOMPSAT-3 satellite, the structure of the sensor, and the movement of the satellite's orbit, was calculated, and in this process, trucks running on the highway were used. In addition, the actual direction and the direction by parallax effect of the aircraft were calculated using the coordinates of the aircraft in the image, and the attitude information of the KOMPSAT-3 satellite was calculated using metadata to estimate the velocity and altitude of the aircraft. The estimated value through the proposed method was compared with the actual value, automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), and the error rate was calculated here. As a result, it was confirmed that the velocity and altitude error rate of large aircraft (I1, I3, S2) were lower than that of light aircraft (I2, S2), and the estimated velocity and altitude were relatively high in large aircraft using the proposed method.
