  • The processing paper has devoted to the theory of the flow equations, the basic derivative procedure, the meaning of a valve flow coefficient $C_v$, the valve Reynolds R$R_{ev}$ and its application for liquid control valves, which applicable under the condition of a non-critical flow and the case of piping geometry factor $F_p$=1.0. However there is no information on the effects of fittings, a critical flow and the flow resistance coefficient of a valve equivalent to that of pipe which is conveniently used in the piping design. Since the piping systems of plants or ships generally contain various fittings such as expanders and reducers due to different size between pipes and valves and there may occur a critical flow, that a mass flowrate is maintained to be constant, due to the pressure drop in a piping when a liquid is initially maintainder ar a saturated temperature or at nearby corresponding to upstream pressure, system designer should have a knowledge of the effect to flow due to fittings and the critical flow phenomenon of a liquid. This study is performed to inform system designers with the critical flow phenomenon of a liquid, a valve resistance coefficient, a valve geometry factor and their applications.

  • Recently, the notion of National Innovation System (NIS) has attracted considerable attention as a key driver of the economic success. Amongst others, the Northeast Asian countries deserve highlight as central cases of NIS. This research attempts to examine inter-industrial knowledge flows and structure among Northeast Asian countries. To this end, Korea, Japan and Taiwan are selected and the patent citation data, a proxy of disembodied knowledge flows, from United Stated Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO) are employed for cluster analysis and network analysis. Some meaningful findings are presented and distinctive characteristics of respective countries are contrasted.

  • The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive (ODD). Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in a personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity component and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), and the flow patterns induced by rotating disc in the ODD are calculated by a commercial finite volume method at the same time. The results show that the front holes reduce flow-induced noise and the position of pickup body only affects flow near the window. Furthermore, it is possible for cooling of heat sources in the drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray. In addition, the numerical results are well matched up to the experimental results, therefore, the validation of the numerical results can be achieved. From the validation of numerical results, it is possible to predict the flow characteristics of the region where it is unable to conduct the experiment.

  • Many dispatching rules have been developed for the on-line control of product flow in a job shop. The introduction of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) has added a new requirement to classical job shop control problem : the selection of machines by parts of different types. An FMS can keep a great deal of information on the status of the system, such as information on what is scheduled in the near future, with great accuracy. For example, the knowledge of the time when the next part will arrive at each machine can be neneficial for the routing. This paper tests the effects of the use of this knowledge for part routing on the parts flow time (sum of the time for waiting and service) under a simple routing procedure- a look-ahead routing procedure. A test under many operating conditions shows that the reduction of part flow time from the cases without using this information is between 1% and 11%, which justifies more study on this routing procedure at real production sites when machine capacity is a critical issue. The test results of this paper are also valid for other highly automated systems such as the semi-conductor fabrication plants for routing when the arrivals of parts in the near future are known.

  • Operators face challenges to plan alternative countermeasures when no procedure exists to address the current plant state. A model-based approach is desired to aid operators in acquiring plant resources and deriving response plans. Multilevel flow modeling (MFM) is a functional modeling methodology that can represent intentional knowledge about systems, which is essential in response planning. This article investigates the capabilities of MFM to plan alternatives. It is concluded that MFM has a knowledge capability to represent alternative means that are designed for given ends and a reasoning capability to identify alternative functions that can causally influence the goal achievement. The second capability can be applied to find originally unassociated means to achieve a goal. This is vital in a situation where all designed means have failed. A technique of procedure synthesis can be used to express identified alternatives as a series of operations. A case of station blackout occurring at the boiling water reactor is described. An MFM model of a boiling water reactor is built according to the analysis of goals and functions. The accident situations are defined by the model, and several alternative countermeasures in terms of operating procedures are generated to achieve the goal of core cooling.

  • In the knowledge-information-oriented society, it is difficult for students to solve lots of problems or adapt themselves to society just by using simple knowledge. Students have to develop individual problem solving ability and creative, logical thinking ability. They can develope these abilities by learning computer programming. This thesis studies the influences of a flow-chart learning on the logical thinking ability in Scratch using programming learning. The findings identify that the making algorithm by using flow-chart is more effective in developing logical thinking ability then the making algorithm by using pseudo-code.

  • A company regards knowledge shared and used within a corporate organization as intellectual capital linked to corporate competences. A great deal of research has been conducted in the past to identify knowledge sharing among knowledge workers. Some papers focus on information technology for automated, efficient, and explicit knowledge sharing. Other papers emphasize the role of social networks to identify the flow of tacit knowledge. Though the role of CoP(Community of Practice) is emphasized to facilitate knowledge management among workers, it is not an easy task to identify the potential members of CoP without voluntary participation of the workers. In this study we adopt a social network approach to analyze knowledge propagation and to identify the potential members of CoP. We suggest a framework for classifying knowledge workers and the result of feasibility study.

  • Technology transfer is recognized as a critical issue to strengthen industri competitiveness in today's global and knowledge-based economies. The vertical transfer of technology from R&D labs to industries is becoming more emphasized than the horizontal company-to-company transfer of commercialized technology. The network and cooperation among technology transfer intermediaries are becoming more important with the increasing demand of the comprehensive technology transfer services. This paper presents the configuration models for technology transfer from universities and research institutes to industries. The configuration models are classified and discussed from the viewpoint of information flow, and also technology and knowledge transfer.

  • The concept of Communities of Practice (CoPs) has been highlighted as an effective method for knowledge sharing in Knowledge Management (KM) and has been utilized strategically by many organizations. Therefore, the need to diagnose knowledge sharing activities in CoPs has increased. Previous studies of CoP strategies has generally suggested broad guidelines without diagnosing the current knowledge sharing status of individual CoPs. Furthermore, diagnosis methodologies are not connected to the strategic direction and require considerable time and effort to conduct regularly. The purpose of this paper was to develop a sustainable diagnosis framework for identifying knowledge sharing activities in virtual CoPs and to suggest strategies for CoPs-based on the proposed diagnosis framework. Finally, the proposed diagnosis framework was applied to an educational service case.
