  • This study presents a multilingual integrated ontological approach that enables linking classification systems. thesauri. and terminology databases in science and technology for more effective indexing and information retrieval online. In this integrated system, we designed a thesaurus model with concept as a unit and designated essential data elements for a terminology database on the basis of ISO 12620 standard. The classification system for science and technology adopted in this study provides subject access channels from other existing classification systems through its mapping table. A prototype system was implemented with the field of nuclear energy as an application area.

  • This study explored the Dis-Functional(DF) factors associated with the information and utilization of the R&D outcomes which has been left behind in the environmental & energy science research field. Of the total of 225 sample surveyed, exactly 66.2% responded to the questions about DF factors. The major factors that have been experienced by the respondents included the followings : the shortage of manpower and budget, inadequate network utilities of resource sharing, unstable policies of digitalization of R&D databases and of presenting a specimen copy(not only report itself but also experimental data), deficient knowledge resource system for the specialized sub-research areas, absence of the process of TLO and commercialization of R&D results, and underestimation of the significance of quality control (evaluation) of academic and research information. Some recommendations for utilization of the R&D outcomes were suggested according to the DF factors investigated.

  • We proposed "Table Mediator" which is a tabletop system for digital storytelling that uses web-retrieved information for the students' educational field trip. Students can perform their storytelling for their virtual pre-field trip to build up a sequential path as a story with web-retrieved documents, satellite images, geographical information, and group discussion. The proposed system was designed to lessen the limitation of individual interaction such as restricted viewpoint and biased inclination by group digital storytelling. Local interactions also have the limitation such as insufficient information and knowledge and the system supplied the rich live information such as subjective critiques or recently discovered history, or new updates for building a story that makes users arrange their own idea as a consistent story to lessen the limitation of the local interactions. The system can be used for various applications such as travel, education and other collaborative works with group interaction.

  • The decision making process is based on accurate and timely available information. To obtain precise information from the internet is becoming more difficult due to the continuous increase in vagueness and uncertainty from online information resources. This also poses a problem for blind people who desire the full use from online resources available to other users for decision making in their daily life. Ontology is considered as one of the emerging technology of knowledge representation and information sharing today. Fuzzy logic is a very popular technique of artificial intelligence which deals with imprecision and uncertainty. The classical ontology can deal ideally with crisp data but cannot give sufficient support to handle the imprecise data or information. In this paper, we incorporate fuzzy logic with heavyweight ontology to solve the imprecise information extraction problem from heterogeneous misty sources. Fuzzy ontology consists of fuzzy rules, fuzzy classes and their properties with axioms. We use Fuzzy OWL plug-in of Protege to model the fuzzy ontology. A prototype is developed which is based on OWL-2 (Web Ontology Language-2), PAL (Protege Axiom Language), and fuzzy logic in order to examine the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • This study suggests evaluation criteria for the web-based question-answer databases provided by major Korean search portals. In particular, this study suggests evaluation criteria for the relevance of question titles, entire questions, and answer's. The evaluation criteria for the qualify of answers are also developed. Based on these criteria. evaluation of documents from Naver Knowledge-in are performed. The results of this study can be implemented to the development of test collection of question-answer databases. The implications for system designers and web content providers are discussed.

  • Soil moisture, through its dominance in the exchange of energy and moisture between the land and atmosphere, plays a crucial role in influencing atmospheric circulation. To identify the crucial role, it is a common agreement that knowledge of land surface processes and development of remote sensing techniques are of great important scientific issues. This research uses TRMM satellite C band (10.65 GHz) data to retrieve soil moisture on the Tibetan Plateau in Mainland China. Two retrieval schemes that are implemented include the t-(J) model and the R model. The latter one is developed based on a land surface process and radiobrightness (R) model for bare soil and vegetated terrain. Compared with the in situ ground measurements, the soil moisture retrieved from the R model and the t-(J) model with vegetation information obviously appear more accurate than that derived from bare soil model. Retrieved soil moisture contents from the two inversion models, R model and t-(J) model, have a similar trend, but the former appears to be superior in terms of correlation coefficient and bias compared with in situ data. In the future, we will apply the R model with the TRMM 10.65 GHz brightness temperature to monitor long-term soil moisture variation over Tibet Plateau.

  • In writing learning as a second/foreign language, a learner has to acquire not only lexical and syntactical knowledge but also the skills to choose suitable words for content which s/he is interested in. A learning system should extrapolate learner\\`s intention and give example phrases that concern with the content in order to support this on the system. However, a learner cannot always represent a content of his/her desired phrase as inputs to the system. Therefore, the system should be equipped with a diagnosis function for learner\\`s intention. Additionally, a system also should be equipped with an analysis function to score similarity between learner\\`s intention and phrases which is stored in the system on both syntactic and idiomatic level in order to present appropriate example phrases to a learner. In this paper, we propose architecture of an interactive support method for English writing learning which is based an analogical search technique of sample phrases from corpora. Our system can show a candidate of variation/next phrases to write and an analogous sentence that a learner wants to represents from corpora.

  • Stroke, also called an attack on the brain, is a complex disease that results from the interaction of many genetic and environmental factors. StrokePortal is a comprehensive resource for information on stroke that integrates and provides essential findings regarding stroke pathology, diagnostics, and treatments, based on Oriental and Western medicine. The stroke information was collected from various sources, such as journal articles, books, websites, and news stories, and it was refined, classified, and stored into a relational database system by automatic classification and manual curation. To provide the stored information effectively to users, a specialized retrieval system, based on web interfaces, was implemented. StrokePortal provides cutting-edge information to experts; interested people, including patients and their families; and investigators to broaden their knowledge of effective treatments for patients and offer many preventive measures. It provides a specialized feature with which users can upload their information and opinions to StrokePortal, which will enrich and mature the content even further. StrokePortal is freely accessible at http://genomics.kribb.re.kr/StrokePortal/.

  • This paper is focus on 3D virtual building design technic that construction materials are showed by components and these components are part of patterns, and building design using pattern is possible. To use this technique in process of construction, design, analysis, change, assembly, etc, we will develop flexible building design system that it supports efficient building change and low cost by construction design simulation. Specially also the designer and the user use a pattern and easily will be able to change the building and according to change pattern information of the materials, design of the buildings which are changed creates automatic. Also we will implement knowledge retrieval engine which is necessary to personal skill or visualization.

  • Without detailed exact knowledge of a retrieval collection, most users find it difficult to formulate effective queries. In fact, most users may spend large amount of time formulating queries in order to obtain their desired result. A method to overcome this difficulty is to use query expansion that reformulates better query from initial query. In this paper we propose concept based query evaluation method using concept of class that retrieved from initial query. This concept is expanded through thesaurus. For efficiency evaluation of query expansion, we defined most critical value through a simulation and compared precision and recall each other.
