Building Hierarchical Knowledge Base of Research Interests and Learning Topics for Social Computing Support (소셜 컴퓨팅을 위한 연구·학습 주제의 계층적 지식기반 구축)

  • This paper consists of two parts: In the first part, we describe our work to build hierarchical knowledge base of digital library patron's research interests and learning topics in various scholarly areas through analyzing well classified Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) of NDLTD Union catalog. Journal articles from ACM Transactions and conference web sites of computing areas also are added in the analysis to specialize computing fields. This hierarchical knowledge base would be a useful tool for many social computing and information service applications, such as personalization, recommender system, text mining, technology opportunity mining, information visualization, and so on. In the second part, we compare four grouping algorithms to select best one for our data mining researches by testing each one with the hierarchical knowledge base we described in the first part. From these two studies, we intent to show traditional verification methods for social community miming researches, based on interviewing and answering questionnaires, which are expensive, slow, and privacy threatening, can be replaced with systematic, consistent, fast, and privacy protecting methods by using our suggested hierarchical knowledge base.

  • In this paper, we described the export system to monitor and diagnose 765KV power apparatus. To develop this expert system, we studied the knowledge bases and data bases for 765KV transformer and GIS. In order to make the reliable inference of knowledge base and the good MMI(Man Machine Interface), the data bases were consisted of the tables of power apparatus information, limit level value, measured input data, inference result and diagnosis result. The knowledge base had various rules to infer the conditions of transformer and GIS. We applied both the forward chaining and backward chaining methods to these rules of system for good inferences. This paper describes the applied methods for expert system. Also, this developed system was tested with dissolved gas analyzing result and the result was shown.

  • A method to automate hazard analysis of chemical plants is proposed in this paper. The proposed system is composed of three knowledge bases - unit knowledge base, organizational knowledge base and material knowledge base, and three hazard analysis algorithms - deviation, malfunction and accident analysis algorithm. Hazard analysis inference procedure is developed based on the actual hazard analysis procedures and accident development sequence. The proposed algorithm can perform hazard analysis in two methods and represent all conceivable types of accidents using accident analysis algorithm. In addition, it provides intermediate steps in the accident propagation, and enables the analysis result to give a useful information to hazard assessment. The proposed method is successfully demonstrated by being applied to diammonium phosphate manufacturing process. A system to automate hazard analysis is developed by using the suggested method. The developed system is expected to be useful in finding the propagation path of a fault or the cause of a malfunction as it is capable to approach causes of faults and malfunctions simultaneously.

  • For using the knowledge of experts diversely and efficiently, it is very important that the system could represent the complex knowledge in well structured manner and also adapt well to the frequent schema changes. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for knowledge base management by using XML based templates. In our proposed method, to solve the inefficiency of management of many XML documents, we represent the complex knowledge on XML-based templates, and manage the templates structurally by using a meta-template that defines relationship among the templates. In order to show the effectiveness of our method, we developed a knowledge base to formulate an exercise prescription for a subject and an application program to classify the subject's fitness. The experimental study shows that XML-based templates provide a flexible, extensible and structured way of representing expert knowledge. The inference using XML-based templates can be controlled systematically and efficiently by using meta-template.

  • The existing fuzzy traffic controllers construct the rule-base based on the intuitive knowledge and experience or the standard rule-base, but the rule-base constructed by the above methods has difficulty in representing exactly and detailedly the control knowledge of the export and the operator. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method that can improve the performance of the fuzzy traffic control by designing the fuzzy traffic controller which represents the control knowledge more exactly. The proposed method so modifies the position and shape of the fuzzy membership function based on the input-output data clustering that the fuzzy traffic controller can represent the control knowledge more exactly. Our method use the rough control knowledge based on intuitive knowledge and experience as the evaluation function for clustering the input-output data. The fuzzy traffic controller designed by the our method could represent the control knowledge of the expert and the operator more exactly, and it outperformed the existing controller in terms of the number of passed vehicles and the wasted green-time.

  • Expert system is a practical application part of the artificial intelligence and can be generally described as a computer-based system designed to simulate the knowledge and reasoning of a human expert, and to make that knowledge conveniently available to other people in a useful way. Expert systems consist of three major components, knowledge base, inference engine and user interface. In this paper, it is aimed to construct a prototype system to design the horizontal-typed pressure vessel. To do this, a representative artificial programming language, Turbo Prolog, was employed, and the knowledge representation was mainly done by the production rule such as "If(condition), than (action)" style and by the predicate logic. In the developed system, it was quite easy to represent the knowledge of "If(condition), then (action)"style and by the predicate logic.   • The main propulsion system may be the most complicated of the shipboard systems. Many factors such as fuel economy, weight, space, first cost, reliability, vibration and noise must be considered when selecting the prime mover of the main propulsion system for ships. An expert system is a computer program that represents and reasons with knowledge of some specialist subject with a view to solving problems or giving advice. Recently, it is being developed increasingly with wider applications in many industries. This paper describes development of knowledge-based system for main engine selection of ships using general purpose expert system development tool, Nexpert Object. Developed system is consist of ship performance estimation module such as resistance and propulsion, data base for main engine, knowledge base for main engine selection in Nexpert Object and graphic user interface.

Company Name Discrimination in Tweets using Topic Signatures Extracted from News Corpus

  • It is impossible for any human being to analyze the more than 500 million tweets that are generated per day. Lexical ambiguities on Twitter make it difficult to retrieve the desired data and relevant topics. Most of the solutions for the word sense disambiguation problem rely on knowledge base systems. Unfortunately, it is expensive and time-consuming to manually create a knowledge base system, resulting in a knowledge acquisition bottleneck. To solve the knowledge-acquisition bottleneck, a topic signature is used to disambiguate words. In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of various features of newspapers on the topic signature extraction for word sense discrimination in tweets. Based on our results, topic signatures obtained from a snippet feature exhibit higher accuracy in discriminating company names than those from the article body. We conclude that topic signatures extracted from news articles improve the accuracy of word sense discrimination in the automated analysis of tweets.

  • This paper presents the automatically extracting method of data item from name-cards using knowledge-base. In our approach, we utilize a structural information and a relational information between data items and elements with knowledge in the name-cards. To describe a hierarchical knowledge, we uses a flame structure and we propose an algorithim of domain classification to extract item and group candidate domains from the name-cards. From the experimental results, we obtain the extraction rate, 95%, for 100 samples.

  • This paper describes an experimental Knowledge-Based Control System, named KBCS, for manufacturing and assembly. The KBCS of five parts and function : data-base, knowledge acquisition, optimization, and graphic monitoring. The KBCS is utilized for a FMS which is of five machine centers and automatic assembly lines. Each machine can perform almost all manufacturing functions which some difference in efficiency. Buffers store temporarily the incoming components and the outing components. Parts arrive at assembly lines after many steps of manufacturing, and the transfer path and time are determined by procedural knowledge of control systems. Nine different incoming components are set up. The total control system is expected to perform four algorithms, timing algorithm ,sequencing algorithm, penalty algorithm, and cart algorithm. The construction of controller require basic components of manufacturing systems in which knowledges are formulated on the base of the results and the repeated simulation of KBCS with graphic monitoring system. Simulation results by KBCS are compared with those by the other rules of manufacturing.
