  • One of the conspicuous changes in kitchens is that kitchen space is more economically constructed than ever before giving more considerations to functionality. At the same time, eco-friendliness begins enjoying more attention for health and well-being reasons. Which is more important between functionality and eco-friendliness is a matter of personal taste and judgement. But eco-friendliness has become one of the more critical criteria for users to choose kitchen furniture. This paper examines the design trends of Contemporary kitchen furniture from the perspective of functionality and eco-friendliness. Results show that, as has been expected, many of kitchen furniture items manufactured by major furniture businesses have been found more functional and more eco-friendly than before the research period. I expect this trend to continue long into the future.

  • This study purposes drawing changing tendency of apartment kitchen areas and character of that by figuring out type, form and per period cause of change of brand apartment kitchen areas. I adopted subject of study as the six leading construction companies considering the apartment rankings of brand and subcontract from 2001 to 2015 when brand apartment was activated(Samsung C&T corporation Raemian, Daelim Industrial Co., Ltd E-pyeonhansesang, Daewoo E&C Prugio, GS E&C XI, Posco E&C The sharp, Hyundai E&C Hillstate) and analyzed kitchen plane of $84m^2{\sim}102m^2$ housing units which were in great demand from apartment housing market. Also, I drew changing trends of kitchen areas by conducting a model house field survey. Through this study result, I will expect the utility of baseline data which is necessary for space development by figuring out kitchen culture, flows and cause of change.

  • The purpose of this study is to interpret a house as material into culture. Main method is an ethnographic interview with dwellers as a part of a participant observation, a kind qualitative study. Significantly two different types of folk housing are discovered in East and West areas of the Cheju Island. In the East, kitchen itself forms a separated building, Jeongji-gori, whereas in the West, kitchen is within a main building, An-gori. Different type of kitchen is formed by the different family system. While independent family system of son and father selects a separate kitchen building as a general rule of Cheju Island, an extended family system between father and son selects same kitchen, Jeongji-gori, in the east area. Natural environment of infertile soil of east area makes family work together and eat together. Inner space of the kitchen building is utilized not only in cooking but also in eating, working, and sleeping. In order to explain folk house type, a 'culture area' concept is suggested. The interrelated 'cultural type' of architecture behind a physical surface 'type' is suggested as a new typology.

Mostly the living room is made as open plan of LDK type. Mostly, the entrance hall is separate with living room. Even if the case of the entrance hall is connected with living room, it is planned to be recognized as entrance hall, by making entrance poach or connecting it with stair hall. In many case, the public space is designed as traditional Japanese style, such as wellhole style space (吹拔け), courtyard, and Japanese style room (和室). The Japanese style room is adjacent to living room, and used as the space of receiving guests. The wellhole style space and courtyard are recognized as the center of the house, and used as buffer space for ensuring privacy of each generation. The most different point between bachelor house and multi generation family house is another LDK space, living room or kitchen for parents' generation is made separately. Particularly there are many case of making separate small kitchen space, therefore it can be known that, the separation of kitchen space is recognized more importantly than that of living room. And there are many case of making separate entrance hall, two houses under one roof. The spatial composition like this can said as rational method of ensuring the privacy of each generation, and using the public space together as necessary.

  • This study is for the Kyungduk-Dan(as a altar of Milsung-Daegun) and The Manun-Jae the characteristics(lay out and planning, window patterns, structure, materials) of the the Korean traditional house during the modern era. Before Manun-Jae was used for the house. The Kyungduck-Dan was constructed in August according to the Lunar Calender in 1927. The Manun-Jae(house for Ki-hun Kang, millionaire ) was completed in 1924. Modern Architectures brought to Korea with the bricks, the tiles, the flash doors, the plate grasses, the brass hardwares. These architectural material was used in positive. During the construction of Manun-Jae in 1924, it happened the architectural exchage among a korean, a chinese and a japanese constructor. Though using the air exhaust valve at the kitchen of Ukyung-Kak( old Anchae), it could be assume that the modern convenience and the improvement of residential environments was considered at that period during the construction of Manun-Jae. That construction was elected with the brick($222mm{\times}106mm{\times}50mm$), the chinese colored tile and plate glass such a modem materials. The new shape of the korean lattice window and the wooden flash-door with glass was used. In Ukyung-Kak, the Chan-Maru(service space) and the kitchen such as a service space or concise utility zone was organically connected. Especially, considered the domesitic activity and circulation, the western kitchen sink and the Chan-Maru(service space) was rationally placed. At the Manun-Jae and the Kyungduck-Dan, the architectural characteristic is that the new shape of windows was used. The lattice window at the Ondol room of Ukyung-Kak, was rgadually added the plate glass and the wood plate. The lattice window with the grid shape at kitchen of that building was adapted japanese grid lattice window in korea at that period. It is the sample that korean traditional house was typically influenced from the japanese resident culture. • A study was conducted to develop user-centered kitchen furniture and workspace to reduce fatigue and to prevent housewives's disorders such as low back pain and musculoskeletal disorders from housekeeping activities. A questionnaire survey and interview were performed on 150 households those live in 32Pyung-type($105m^2$) apartment in Seoul vicinity. Also actual housekeeping activities for 24 hours were video-taped for further motion analysis. Results of the study revealed that housewives complained the inconvenience and small size of storage space, and worksurface height as the most important problems to be considered for redesign. And they responded, if feasible, sitting is preferred over standing while they are working. After adapting a sit/stand chair in the kitchen, a physiological experiment measuring heart rate(HR) and oxygen consumption($VO_2$) as response variables was conducted to examine the effects of sit/stand chair in reducing physiological demand during housekeeping activities. The results showed that working on sit/stand chair reduced energy expenditures by maximum of 30% and 31.0% in terms of HR and $VO_2$, respectively. Also rearrangement of kitchen structure based on motion analysis showed that walking distance during daily housekeeping activities can be reduced by 5.5% on the average. Hence, it is concluded that adapting a sit/stand chair in the kitchen could reduce fatigue and occupational disorders of housewives from extended housekeeping activities.

  • In the spatial configuration of a unit plan, two rules exist: one that governs the arrangement of spaces, and one that controls the design process of generating a unit plan. This study defines space grammar as an integration of the two rules that give birth to a given spatial configuration and as the process of the generation of unit plans. To understand the distinctive features of Indonesian row houses, this study analyzes the unit plans of row houses in new towns of the metropolitan cities of Indonesia, derives a common space grammar from the unit plans, and interprets the sociocultural background that has produced this space grammar. This study employs Seo's (2007a; 2007b) graph-theoretic methodology to analyze the spatial configurations of unit plans along with a topographical approach to systematically illustrate the design process. The guest space was found as the most unique space of Indonesian houses, which cannot be found in other Southeast Asian houses. Kitchen was clearly seperated from the dining and living spaces, following traditional custom. Dining space was found to serve as a circulation center, connecting the entrance, the lving area and the kitchen. This study locates the basic orders of primary space and the design principles that dictate the unique spatial configurations of Indonesian row houses. This study reveals the basic space grammar that underpins the forms of Indonesian row houses, explaining the sociocultural and geo-climatic factors affecting this space grammar and proposing unique characteristics of Indonesian contemporary houses.
