  • Retarding retrogradation of Korean rice cakes(Karedduk) with a mixture of trehalose and Sun-Tender added, after 0, 24, and 48 hr of storage at $5^{\circ}C$, was analyzed by Avrami kinetics. A central composite design was used for arrangement of treatment. The two independent variables selected for retarding retrogradation analysis were amounts of trehalose(x) and Sun-Tender(y). Trehalose was added at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12% levels, and Sun-Tender added at 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2% levels, to dry rice flour. The Avrami exponent(n) for the mixtures of 9% trehalose and 0.3% Sun-Tender, and 9% trehalose and 0.9% Sun-Tender were lower than in the control. The time constant(1/k) for the mixture of trehalose and Sun-Tender was higher than in the control. The effect of retarding retrogradation of Korean rice cakes with added mixtures of trehalose and Sun-Tender showed an increasing trend as the amount of trehalose increased. These results suggest that adding a mixture of 9% trehalose and 0.3% Sun-Tender, or 9% trehalose and 0.9% Sun-Tender to Korean rice cakes(Karedduk) is effective for retarding retrogradation.

  • The 3-D information is useful as basic data which has been utilized in the development of simulating technology as fit-simulation. The experiment is designed to take some useful data on the variant shapes which contribute in simulating the adaptability of the clothes. The general figure of the clothes are made after the figure of the basic standing posture of the human body. The shape of the clothes fits with kinetic characteristic of the human body as the form of the clothes gets twisted, the ease of the clothes changes, and the clothes itself expands. We studied the dressed shapes of blouse according to two types of the arm movement(basic posture and reach forward) and three types of clothes(foundation, blouse with short sleeves and sleeveless) in the sit-down-posture. We accomplished some experimental data on three-dimensional measurement of the dressing shapes using TDS-3100 3-D scanner made in Japan PULSTECH. It is considered that the variant of shapes and distribution of gaps in the dressed shapes of blouse are determined by the adaptability of clothes made in arm movement.

  • Design data for COD and nitrogen removal from wastewater were collected from Pilot's Multi-stage Bio-reactor. Hyraulic conditions and pollutant loadings were varied in order to optimize the biological and operational parameters. Pilot's experimental results summarize as followings. 1. T-N removal efficiency in the organic volumetric loading 0.2 kgCOD/m$^{3}$·d was obtained as maxium of 85% at internal recycle ratio 2.5 and in more ratio than this it was decreased. Organic removal efficiency was about 91% under the overall experimental conditions and not influenced by recycle ratio.. 2. Nitrification reaction was shown as maxium in the SCOD$_{cr}$/NH$^{+}$-N ratio of 6.5 and in more ratio than this it was decreased. Denitrification rate was the maxium as 85% in more than 7.5 of SCOD$_{cr}$/NO$_{x}$-N ratio and in the ratio over this ratio it becomes constant. 3. By utilizing an applied new model of Stover-Kincannon from Monod's kinetic model, concentration of T-N in the effluent according to flow quanity in the influent was estimated as 8.74 and -67.5 respectively. The formula for estimating T-N concentration of effluent was obtained like this: N$_e$=N$_0$(1- $\frac{8.74}{(QN$_0$/A)-67.05}$)

  • Homogeneous and isotropic turbulence (HIT) with no mean flow is a very useful type of flow for basic turbulence research. However, it is difficult to generate HIT in the lab. In this study, we implemented HIT in a confined box through synthetic jet actuators using sub-woofer speakers. Characteristics of HIT are varied depending on the strength of the jets. We used 2D PIV to measure the velocity field. Turbulence statistics such as homogeneity, isotropy ratio, turbulence kinetic energy, dissipation rate, Taylor microscale, Kolmogorov scale, and velocity correlation coefficient were calculated. Most of the turbulence statistics increased exponentially according to the strength of the jets, and the Taylor Reynolds number reached up to 185.

  • This paper represents a piezoelectric ultrasonic linear actuator with flexural vibration mode. The actuator is composed of two piezo ceramics, the elastic body, and the connecting tip. It is driven by the frictional force between the connecting tip and the linear motion guide. Unimorph actuators have flexural vibration. Its middle point is fixed so that suitable to the flexural vibration of $3/2\lambda$. These vibrations contribute to elliptical motion by mixed mode between longitudinal and transverse mode. It was generated when the ultrasonic electrical signals with 90 degree phase difference are applied to two ceramics. A linear movement can be easily obtained using the elliptical motion. The ATILA, FEM simulator has been used to design actuator and verify the kinetic and dynamic analysis. We used the ceramics of $20\times10\times1$ mm size and confirmed the flexural vibration of the $3/2\lambda$ at the 79 kHz through the scanning of 3D-vibrometer. The maximum velocity of actuator was 221 mm/sec and the thrust force of actuator was 2.7 N in 200Vp-p of additional voltage.

  • Bacillus licheniformis ${\alpha}$-amylase (BLA), a thermophilic counterpart of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ${\alpha}$-amylase (BAA), is an appropriate model for the design of stabilizing mutations in BAA. BLA has 10 more histidines than BAA. Considering this prominent difference, in the present study, three out of these positions (I34, Q67, and P407; located in the thermostability determinant 1 region and Ca-III binding site of BAA) were replaced with histidine in BAA, using the site-directed mutagenesis technique. The results showed that the thermostability of P407H and Q67H mutants had increased, but no significant changes were observed in their kinetic parameters compared to that of the wild type. I34H replacement resulted in complete loss of enzyme activity. Moreover, fluorescence and circular dichroism data indicated a more rigid structure for the P407H variant compared with that of the wild-type BAA. However, the flexibility of Q67H and I34H mutants increased in comparison with that of wild-type enzyme.

  • The thermal load is a very important problem to be solved in many industrial systems including the electronic equipment. Impinging Jets have been known to provide a large heat transfer rates on surface for many years. The turbulence enhancement of fluid flow is requested for the efficiency elevation of heat transfer. A study on flow fields by rods attached to the wall surface as a promoter of turbulence enhancement has been carried out. The exact analysis on chracteristics of impinging jet field is requested to obtain the optimum design of the impinging jet system. By visualizing the flow field and processing the high digital image by computer PIV can afford exact data on the velocity vector kinetic energy and turbulence intensity in the complex turbulence field. In this study. three kinds of rod shape such as square. triangle. and semicircle are selected as the turbulence promoter. Nozzle diameters are 10mm. 17mm. and 23mm. And the analysis of the flow characteristics due to the above rods is carried out at Re No. 2.000, 3.000. and 4,000 by PIV measurement. It is clarified that the rod setup is very useful to obtain the turbulence enhancement and the turbulence intensity according to the shapes of rod appears large in order of the shapes of rod such as square 〉 triangle 〉semicircle.

  • Many researches have been studied on in-cylinder flow as one of dominant effects for an engine combustion. The combustion phenomena of reciprocating engine is one of the most important processes affecting performance and emissions. One effective way to improve the engine combustion is to control the motion of the charge inside a cylinder by means of optimum induction system design. It is believed that the tumble and swirl motion generated during intake breaks down into small-scale turbulence in the compression stroke of the cycle. However, the exact nature of their relationship is not well known. To know this relationship definitely, this paper describes analytical results of the tumble motion, swirl motion, turbulence intensity, turbulence inside the cylinder of marine engine. 3-D computation has been performed by using STAR-CD solver and es-ice.

  • Chelating solutions can be damaged by strong acids during oil production. To design effective corrosion inhibitors and other alternatives for corrosion control, it is important to understand not only the behavior of the system under operating condition but also the kinetics of electrochemical reactions during the corrosion process. In this study, the electrochemical behaviors of P-110 steel in aqueous fluids based on ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) compounds under various temperatures and hydrodynamic regime conditions were assessed. Electrochemical measurements were conducted using rotating disc electrodes manufactured. Electrolytes were prepared using aqueous compounds of EDTA like diammonium salt, disodium salt, and tetrasodium salt. Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance, and mass loss tests were performed in order to assess the corrosion kinetic in electrolytes. Hydrodynamic effects were observed only in the cathodic polarization curve. This proves that hydrodynamic regime plays an important role in the corrosion of steel mainly in disodium and diammonium EDTA solutions. Two cathodic reactions controlled the corrosion process. However, oxygen level and pH of the electrolyte played the most important role in metal corrosion. Corrosion rates in those fluids were decreased drastically when oxygen concentration was reduced.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) refer to the aircraft which carries no human pilot and is operated under remote control or in autonomous operational mode. As the UAVs can perform the dull, dangerous and difficult missions, various kinds of UAVs with different sizes and weights have been developed and operated for both civil and military application. As the avionics and communication technology related to the UAVs are matured, the demand for the UAVs is dramatically increased. Therefore, It is important to develope airworthiness process and regulations of the UAVs to minimize related risk to the man and environment. This paper describes related regulations and classification of the small UAVs for different international airworthiness authorities. The analysis of the CS-LURS verses Stanag 4702 and Stanag 4703 can provide guidelines for the generation of the airworthiness certification criteria for the small UAVs in civil sector. This paper conducted kinetic impact energy analysis of the loss of the small UAVs control scenarios and of the very small UAVs under 66 joules. Based on the analysis, the energy impact analysis can be considered before the design certification approval for the small UAVs.
