  • Ecological lightweight aggregates were made by using the wastes come from various industrial fields. Wastes were crushed and pulverized by mills and a certain portions of wastes were mixed and formed by pelletizer like small beads. The formed lightweight aggregates were finally sintered with $1125^{\circ}C$/15 min conditions by using rotary kiln. Lightweight concrete sound absorbers were made of ecological lightweight aggregates K73 (Coal bottom ash 70 wt%: Dredged soil 30 wt%) and K631 (Clay 60 wt%: Stone sludge 30 wt%: Spent bleaching clay 10 wt%). For the reference, lightweight concrete sound absorbers made of DL (German made 'L' company LWA) were also made under the same conditions. Sound absorption characteristics were observed and measured according to the kinds of aggregates, water/cement ratio (W/C=20, 25, and 30%), and designed pore rates (V=20, 25, and 30%). The pore rates of the lightweight concrete sound absorber were turned out to be 5 to 10% higher than designed ones. Absorption coefficient of the lightweight concrete sound absorber by using K631 aggregates with W/C=20% and V=25% conditions was 0.88 at 1000 and 3150 Hz from the measurement by the impedance tube.

  • The artificial lightweight aggregate (ALA) was manufactured in a rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$ using green body formed by pelletizing the batch powder composing of coal bottom ash (CBA) produced from power plant, clay and dredged soil (DS). The TCLP (Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) results showed that the dissolution concentration of heavy metal ions of ALA fabricated in this study was below the limitation defined by the enforcement regulations of wastes management law in Korea. The ALA containing 60$\sim$70 wt% CBA had a bulk density of 1.45$\sim$1.49 and a water absorption of 17.2$\sim$18.5 %. The impact values for oven-dry state and saturated-surface dry state of ALA were 27.4$\pm$1.3 and 23.4$\pm$2.6 % respectively. The 28-days compressive strength of concrete made with various ALA was $22.7\sim27.8 N/mm^2$. The slump of concrete with ALA containing CBA 60 and 70 wt% were 7.9 and 14.3 cm respectively. The unit weight of concrete made with any ALA fabricated in this study was satisfied with the standard specifications of lightweight concrete for the civil engineering and construction presented by Korea as below $1.84 ton/m^3$.

  • The required energy for the heat treatment of pine log was evaluated in this study. A proper heat treatment of pine log infected by pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) can prevent spreading of the infection by pinewood nematode and make the infected pinewood valuable again. The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) heat treatment standard for various types of infected wood for which a heat treatment of the core part of the wood is necessary is 30 minutes at $56^{\circ}C$, taking into account the international standards for phytosanitary measures (ISPM No. 15). In this study, the energy consumption during the heat treatment was separated into two kinds of energy, initial energy for heating kiln drier and to reach set point temperature and relative humidity and the required energy supplementing heat loss. The initial required energy per unit time is greater than that during the treatment. The energy consumption per unit time varied little during the heat treatment. As a result, the set point relative humidity with set dry bulb temperature and density of wood dependent on moisture content are very important factors to change energy consumption in the experiment. The heat treatment at higher temperature and higher humidity levels requires more energy consumption but less treatment time. It is expected that a more effective energy program could be planed for the heat treatment of pine log through this study.

  • Normally, cedar heartwood has a red color. However, it frequently changes black color (blackening phenomenon). It is reported that blackening phenomenon of cedar has been caused by oxidation of phenolics and norlignan extractives under weak alkaline conditions. In this study, heat treatment and UV irradiation were carried out to reduce the difference of color value between blackened wood and bright sap wood. Effects of temperature, moisture content, treatment time and light on decrease of color difference between blackened heartwood and sapwood were evaluated in each treatment. A decrement of different color value between blackened heartwood and bright sapwood by hot-water treatment was bigger than others. An effect of the vacuum drying was similar to that of the kiln drying. UV irradiation decreases the color difference between dried blackened heartwood and bright sapwood. It is suggested that UV irradiation could be used as final treatment to reduce the color difference on wood during drying process. Determination of optimum conditions and development of hybrid process for control of discoloration will be needed in a further study.

  • For the recycling of sludge as soil conditioner, the firing technology in pottery industry was applied to the sludge treatment, and produced artificial media with many voids. To produce artificial media using sludge, chabazite and lime were used as additives, and the mixture of sludge and additives was thermally treated in the firing kiln at about $800{\sim}1,100^{\circ}C$ for about ten minutes. The effect of mixed artificial media into upland soil was investigated through the crop growth experiment and the physical & chemical characteristics of the mixed soils were analysed. The pH of artificial media was higher than that of the control soils. After the plant growth experiment, artificial media plots almost contained more CEC, OM, TN, TP and $AV.P_2O_5$ than upland soil plots. From the growth analysis, growth of soybean and corn in the artificial media plots was better than that in the original upland soil plots. The yield of soybean and corn in the artificial media plots were about 46kg/10a, 194kg/10a, respectively, which is higher than that in the control. Heavy metals in the artificial media plots were lower than the standard regulation. Therefore, the artificial media produced from sludge can be mixed into farmland, and crop production can be increased additionally.

  • After excavation work of relics, historical site which has historically meaningful, are preserved using the various methods. There are three method in the relocation methods that are original relocation method, the remaining structure-peel method, and soil peel method. The original relocation method is restored after relocating in historical site such as residential site, iron foundry site, kiln site, old mound. The remaining structure-peel method are restored only the feature of exposed remaining structure using polymeric resin, when it is difficult to relocate the entire remaining structure. And soil-peel method is exhibited after peeling in case when soil layers such as grave of old mound, foundation of building site, sedimentary deposit layer, shell heap, and etc. Soil-peel method becomes important historical data of changes according to environment at that time, that is, flooding by storm, traces of fire and living features of that time such as heaps of shells discarded after eating shellfish and living wastes. In particular, in case of soil layer for preparing foundation sites of building by compacting in turn soils with different components such as clay soil, rough sand soil and etc, it becomes important data which can judge foundation technology of that time. It can be said to be an important data preservation method for utilizing these historical data as historical data as well as for the purpose of education, exhibitions and public relations which can be shared not only by experts but also by general public. In this paper, we present the reliable definition of soil-peel method in various preservation methods and explain the using polymer in this method. So, we will come up with the accurate index about this method that is used the eminent analysis method for soil layer.

  • Physical and chemical properties of artificial soil produced by firing process were analyzed and compared with normal dry field soil and soil quality standards. Material used for production was water and wastewater treatment sludge, chabizite, and lime. The mixed material was thermally treated in the firing kiln at about $300^{\circ}C$ and $1,000^{\circ}C$, respectively, as per designed process. General properties of the artificial soil were classified as sand by unified soil classification method and similar to the dry-field soil, and even soil conditioning effect were expected when it is mixed properly with normal soil. The artificial soil is high in pH and permeability compared to the dry-field soil. Heavy metal concentrations of the artificial soil met the soil quality standards for the farmland. Overall, the artificial soil was thought to be an appropriate soil which can be returned safely to the nature without significant adverse effect. The cost for the artificial soil production process needs to be lowered for practical application as a sludge treatment, therefore, commercializing of the artificial soil is under review.

  • It was studied to utilize wasted food as a starting material to produce for activated carbon. The wasted food was chemically activated with zinc chloride. Experiments were carried out at different chemical ratios(activating agent/wasted foods), activation temperatures, and activation time. The activated products were characterized by measuring the iodine and methylene blue number, the BET surface area, the pore volume, the micropore ratio, the pore diameter, the yields and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). For the products activated by impregnation ratio of 1.0 of ZnCl$_2$ at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 60 min in a rotary kiln reactor had iodine number of 480 mg/g, methylene blue number of 95 mL/g, BET surface area of 410 m$^2$/g, pore volume of 0.248 cm$^3$/g, and average pore diameter of 2.43 nm, respectively. The activated carbon obtained had the contribution of micropore area of 70.7% to the total pore area and micropore volume of 53.2% to the total pore volume.

  • The CKD extract is wastewater from which KCl in CKD has been removed to reuse CKD as a cement raw material, and tried to reuse no extracts due to problems such as wastewater treatment facility expansion. As a result of removing KCl by the ion exchange method, the pH of the extract after ion exchange decreased from 12.7 to less than pH 2, and it was confirmed that H+ of the cation exchange resin was dissolved in the extract through ion exchange. In addition, the selectivity of the ion exchange was removed in the order of Ca2+, K+, it was determined that the increase in the contact time to remove the K+ ions. The batch system had a contact time of 6 times or more, compared to the continuous system, and showed 4 times of K+ removal efficiency and 7 times of Cl- removal efficiency. It was showed by analyzing the pH of the extract that more H+ of the cation exchange resin was extracted than OH- of anion exchange resin as the pH of the extract was changed.

  • It was found that test piece heated rapidly by 3 kW microwave for 5 minutes satisfies the targeted temperature and the percentage of moisture content, and the highest rate of weight increase is obtained in case of 120 minute immersion in the mixture of phosphates and heterocyclic compounds, from the result of such analysis as: kiln drying schedule, flame retardent by flammability test, insect resistance by termites, and permeability of combined penetrant for the wood after assigning multifunctional finish by immersing conifer structural frame, which is used for the frame work of wooden house and indoor/outdoor finishing in flame retardant and insect repellent materials mixture with the remaining heat of microwave. In addition, after a test of flame retardent treated item, it was identified that every mixture of phosphates corresponds with the standards of flame retardent, and upon investigation of moritality of 7 days after putting termites, it was showed that test piece immersed in the mixture of phosphates and heterocyclic compounds has the best characteristics, showing over 96% of high moritality. From the analysis of inward permeability of combined penetrant for the wood, it was decided that excellent performance in the flame retardent and insect resistance of the wood revealed due to full penetration of combined penetrant as it was found that combined penetrant penetrated through the whole inner cells of the wood.
