An Empirical Investigation of Task-Technology Fit: Context of RFID in Disaster Management

  • The notion of technological adoption such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been examined in various domains such as supply chain management, inventory management and health care. However, there are several unanswered questions surrounding how this technology is adopted in disaster management. This study attempts to explore the potential of RFID in disaster management. The notion of Task-Technology Fit (TTF) is deemed suitable for this purpose and thus used as the theoretical framework that is further validated by employing multiple case studies. The empirical findings indicate that there are six key factors influencing the decision to adopt RFID in disaster management. Some relate to aspects of RFID when it is put into practice, namely cost, compatibility, standardisation, implementation and locatability; while the other key factor relates to privacy and security aspect of information. It is hoped that the findings of this research will inform disaster management organizations to better plan the adoption of RFID for their operations.

Effects of Different Advance Organizers on Mental Model Construction and Cognitive Load Decrease

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate why advance organizers (AO) are effective in promoting comprehension and mental model formation in terms of cognitive load. Two experimental groups: a concept-map AO group and a key-word AO group and one control group were used. This study considered cognitive load in view of Baddeley's working memory model: central executive (CE), phonological loop (PL), and visuo-spatial sketch pad (VSSP). The present experiment directly examined cognitive load using dual task methodology. The results were as follows: central executive (CE) suppression task achievement for the concept map AO group was higher than the key word AO group and control group. Comprehension and mental model construction for the concept map AO group were higher than the other groups. These results indicated that the superiority of concept map AO owing to CE load decrement occurred with comprehension and mental model construction in learning. Thus, the available resources produced by CE load reduction may have been invested for comprehension and mental model construction of learning contents.

  • The rapid growth of investments in mobile service to reach a large and growing body of customers, coupled with low communication costs, has made user acceptance an increasingly critical management issue. The study draws upon the task-technology fit (TTF) model as its theoretical basis and its empirical findings to pragmatically explain the key factors that affect the performance and user acceptance of mobile service in medical field. A total of 110 usable responses were obtained. The findings indicate that the task, technology, and individual user characteristics positively affect task-technology fit and mobile service usage. The task-technology fit and mobile service usage are the dominant factors that affect mobile service performance. The result points out the importance of the fit between technologies and users' tasks in achieving individual performance impact from mobile service in medical arena.

The effects of dual-task training on ambulatory abilities of stroke patients: Review of the latest trend

  • Objective: Dual-task walking deficits impact functional daily life, which often requires walking while performing simultaneous tasks such as talking, thinking or carrying an object. This study is to find out the latest trend of dual-task training's influence on ambulatory abilities of a stroke patient. Design: Systematic review of randomized controlled trials. Methods: This literature review was conducted in Pubmed and Sciencedirect with the follwing key words:stroke, cerebro-vascular accident, hemiplegia, gait, rehabilitation, exercise. 7 studies were chosen in findings by search tool. 3 studies were case study, 3 studies were cross sectional observational study and 1 study was randomized controlled trial. Results: It was found that stroke patients have difficulties in doing 2 motor tasks simultaneously and when they do 2 tasks, one is done in a naturally preferred activity areas. Moreover, when simply applying dual-tasks, the walking speed decreased. Meanwhile, when applying them through training, the speed increased. This showed the improvement of effective task-implementation abilities after dual-task training using task-integration models. Conclusions: In the beginning of the 2000s, dual-tasks were implemented by simply combining walking and cognition or exercise task, and the results of this study suggest that subjects with stroke have difficulty performing dual task. However, the latest trend is to let patients do the dual-task training by combining it with virtual reality. Therefore, dual task training could be performed in a safe in the environment such as virtual reality or augment reality.

휴대전화와 MP3에 사용되는 Wheel Navigation Key의 사용성 평가 (Usability Evaluation of the Wheel Navigation Key used for Mobile Phone and MP3)

  • The aim of the study is to investigate the usability of wheel navigation key(WNK) recently adopted for the new models of mobile phone and MP3 product. In this study, an experiment was designed to evaluate the functional benefit of WNK by using a performance test. A questionnaire was also used to examine the personal preference. In results, a significant difference was found in performance time between wheel-type and button-type product. In general, the difference was more significant as subject's skill level was higher. In particular, the performance time was significantly shortened with the WNK when a searching task was required, but push button was an effective interface for simple search task among beginners. Therefore, the wheel navigation key can be used to improve the usability of product by reducing the searching time in mobile phone and mp3. For practical application, the user's level of skill needs to be considered to maximize the effect of interface when choosing WNK or push button.

  • This paper describes effectiveness and characteristics of 3 P(point) task analysis as a new Ergonomic and Kansei design method for extracting user demand especially. The key point in 3 P task analysis is to describe the flow of tasks and extract any problems in each task. A solution of a problem means a user demand. 3 P task analysis cal eliminate an oversight of check items by examining the users' information processing level. The suers' information processing level was divided into the following three stages for problem extraction: acquirement of information ---> understanding and judgment ---> operation. Three stages has fourteenth cues such as difficulty of seeing, no emphasis, mapping for extracting problems. To link analysis results to the formulation of a product concept. I added a column on the right side of the table for writing the requirements (user demand) to resolve the problems extracted from each task. The requirements are extracted by using seventh cues. Finally 3 P task analysis was compared with group interview to make the characteristics of 3 P task analysis, especially extracting user demand, clear.

유전 알고리즘을 이용한 로봇 아크 용접작업 (Robot Arc Welding Task Sequencing using Genetic Algorithms)

  • This paper addresses a welding task sequencing for robot arc welding process planning. Although welding task sequencing is an essential step in the welding process planning, it has not been considered through a systematic approach, but it depends rather on empirical knowledge. Thus, an effective task sequencing for robot arc welding is required. Welding perations can be classified by the number of welding robots. Genetic algorithms are applied to tackle those welding task sequencing problems. A genetic algorithm for traveling salesman problem (TSP) is utilized to determine welding task sequencing for a MultiWeldline-SingleLayer problem. Further, welding task sequencing for multiWeldline-MultiLayer welding is investigated and appropriate genetic algorithms are introduced. A random key genetic algorithm is also proposed to solve multi-robot welding sequencing : MultiWeldline with multi robots. Finally, the genetic algorithm are implemented for the welding task sequencing of three dimensional weld plate assemblies. Robot welding operations conforming to the algorithms are simulated in graphic detail using a robot simulation software IGRIP.

Managing Deadline-constrained Bag-of-Tasks Jobs on Hybrid Clouds with Closest Deadline First Scheduling

  • Outsourcing jobs to a public cloud is a cost-effective way to address the problem of satisfying the peak resource demand when the local cloud has insufficient resources. In this paper, we studied the management of deadline-constrained bag-of-tasks jobs on hybrid clouds. We presented a binary nonlinear programming (BNP) problem to model the hybrid cloud management which minimizes rent cost from the public cloud while completes the jobs within their respective deadlines. To solve this BNP problem in polynomial time, we proposed a heuristic algorithm. The main idea is assigning the task closest to its deadline to current core until the core cannot finish any task within its deadline. When there is no available core, the algorithm adds an available physical machine (PM) with most capacity or rents a new virtual machine (VM) with highest cost-performance ratio. As there may be a workload imbalance between/among cores on a PM/VM after task assigning, we propose a task reassigning algorithm to balance them. Extensive experimental results show that our heuristic algorithm saves 16.2%-76% rent cost and improves 47.3%-182.8% resource utilizations satisfying deadline constraints, compared with first fit decreasing algorithm, and that our task reassigning algorithm improves the makespan of tasks up to 47.6%.

운전 중 IVIS 조작 상황에서 Motor Cue와 과제의 난이도가 과제 전환과 운전 주행에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Motor Cues and Secondary Task Complexity on Driving Performance and Task Switching While Driving)

  • 최근 자동차와 IT기술의 융합으로 차량 내 인포테인먼트 시스템이 운전자에게 편의 및 오락 기능을 제공하며 역할이 중요해지고 있다. 하지만 운전과 인포테인먼트 시스템을 조작하는 것은 동시에 시각 리소스를 요구하는 과제로 과제를 전환하며 수행해야 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 운전 중 인포테인먼트 시스템 조작 상황에서 조작 과제의 난이도와 motor cue가 과제 전환과 운전 주행능력에 미치는 영향과 함께, motor cue의 효과가 조작 과제의 난이도 수준에 따라 차이가 있는지 보고자 하였다. motor cue와 조작 과제 난이도의 효과를 살펴보기 위해 반복되는 숫자가 청크 단위와 일치하는지에 따라 두 종류의 번호를 사용하였으며, 터치 키의 크기로 난이도 수준을 조절했다. 실험에서 참가자들은 모의 주행을 하며 스크린에 번호를 입력하도록 지시받았고, 과제 수행 중 번호 입력시간, 차선 유지능력, 숫자 키 입력 시간 간격과 핸들 움직임을 측정했다. 그 결과, 난이도 수준에 따라 운전 주행 능력과[F(1, 26) = 8.521, p < .001], 번호 입력 시간의 차이가 유의미했고[F(1, 26) = 35.372, p < .0001], 번호 종류에 따른 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 하지만 Incongruent 번호 입력 시, 청크로 구분된 두 숫자를 입력하는 시간의 간격과 핸들 움직임이 크게 증가하였다. 이는 반복된 숫자가 청크로 구분되어도 청크를 무시하고 한 번에 입력하였음을 나타낸다. 종합하면, 다중 과제 상황에서 청크 단위는 motor cue에 의해 상쇄되며 과제 전환 시점을 결정하는 데에 motor cue의 효과가 있음을 시사한다.

햅틱 안내를 이용한 가상 유지보수 훈련 시스템의 개발 (Development of Maintenance Training System by Using Haptic Guidance)

  • In order to do a maintenance task, a maintenance operator should learn the basic skills of the maintenance task such as assembly and disassembly (A/D). However, the key of the learning process is to learn the A/D task intuitively and naturally. Haptic guidance promises to give effectiveness and benefit qualitatively since a person can be trained to do the optimal task based on information that comes from an expert, database, or intelligent algorithms. By applying haptic guidance, a maintenance training process can be made more intuitive and natural in a virtual environment. This paper describes the development of a maintenance training system by using haptic guidance.
