The effect of temperature on natural frequency and damping is investigated in two different composite materials, Kevlar 29 fiber woven and polyethylene cloth, used especially to design ballistic armor. A damping monitoring method is used experimentally to measure the frequency response curve and it is also modeled numerically using a finite element program. The natural frequencies of a material, or a system, are a function of its elastic properties, dimensions and mass. This concept is used to calculate theoretical vibration modes of the composites. The damping properties in terms of the damping factor are determined by the half-power bandwidth technique. Numerically analyzed and experimentally measured time response curves are compared. It is seen that polymer matrix composites have temperature dependent mechanical properties. This relationship is functional and they have different effects against temperature.
This paper describes the need for a ductile of Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) reinforcement for concrete structures. The criteria to be met by the FRP, which are based on the properties of the steel rebar it is to replace, are threefold: high initial modulus, a definite yield point and a high level of ultimate strain. It is shown that the use of a fiber architecture based design methodology facilitates the optimization of the performance of FRP through material and geometric hybrid. Ductile hybrid FRP bars were successfully fabricated at 3mm and 5mm nominal diameters using an in-line braiding and pultrusion process.
The role of transfer films formed during sliding of polymer composites against steel counterfaces was studied in terms of the tribological behaviors of composites. Four kinds of composites were included in this study: (1) unfilled PPS, (2) PPS+2%CuO, (3) PPS+2%CuO+5% carbon fiber (CF), and (4) PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar. The filler material CuO was in nanoscale particulate form and the reinforcing material was in the form of short fibers. The composites were prepared by compression molding at $310^{\circ}C$ and sliding tests were run in the pin-on-disk sliding configuration. The counterface was made of tool steel hardened to 55-60 HRC and finished to a surface roughness of 0.09-0.10 ${\mu}m$ Ra. Wear tests were run for 6 hrs at the sliding speed of 1 m/s and contact pressure of 0.65 MPa. Transfer films formed on the counterfaces during sliding were investigated using AFM and SEM. The results showed that as the transfer film became smooth and uniform, wear rate decreased. PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar composite showed the lowest steady state wear rate in this study and its transfer film showed the smoothest and the most uniform characteristics. The examination of worn surfaces of PPS+2%CuO composite using X-ray area scanning (dot mapping) showed back-transfer of steel counterface material to the polymer pin surface. This behavior is believed to strengthen the polymer pin surface during sliding thereby contributing to the decrease in wear rate.
Fully biodegradable high strength composites or 'advanced green composites' were fabricated using yearly renewable soy protein based resins and high strength liquid crystalline cellulose fibers. For comparison, E-glass and aramid ($Kevlar^{(R)}$) fiber reinforced composites were also prepared using the same modified soy protein resins. The modification of soy protein included forming an interpenetrating network-like (IPN-like) resin with mechanical properties comparable to commonly used epoxy resins. The IPN-like soy protein based resin was further reinforced using nano-clay and microfibrillated cellulose. Fiber/resin interfacial shear strength was characterized using microbond method. Tensile and flexural properties of the composites were characterized as per ASTM standards. A comparison of the tensile and flexural properties of the high strength composites made using the three fibers is presented. The results suggest that these green composites have excellent mechanical properties and can be considered for use in primary structural applications. Although significant additional research is needed in this area, it is clear that advanced green composites will some day replace today's advanced composites made using petroleum based fibers and resins. At the end of their life, the fully sustainable 'advanced green composites' can be easily disposed of or composted without harming the environment, in fact, helping it.
This paper describes the need for a ductile Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) reinforcement for Concrete Structures. Using the material hybrid and geometric hybrid, it is demonstrated that the pseudo-ductility Characteristic can be generated in FRP rebar. Ductile hybrid FRP bars were successfully fabricated at Ø3mm and Ø10mm nominal diameters using the braidtrusion process. Tensile and bending specimens from these bars were tested and compared with behavior of stress-strain of steel bar and GFRP rebar
Since the discovery of liquid crystallinity by Reinitzer [1] in 1988 as he studied the melting behavior of cholesteryl benzoate, anisotropic structural ordering in fluid phases has been of considerable interest to chemists, physicists and other scientists. Polymers which exhibit liquid crystallinity either in solution (lyotropic) or in the neat state upon heating (thermotropic) have both theoretical and practical importance [2]. Du Pont's Kevlar, a high modulus polyamide fiber spun from a lyotropic solution, is a prime example of such an application.
The objective of this research is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the hybrid fiber reinforced composite rebar, which is manufactured from a braidtrusion process. Braidtrusion is a direct composite fabrication technique, utilizing in-line brading and the pultrusion process. hz order to obtain the mechanical behavior of the glass fiber, carbon fiber, and kevlar fiber, the tensile tests are carried out. The results of the fibers are compared with that of steel. Hybrid rebar specimens with various diameters, ranging from model size (3 mm) to full-scale size (9.5 mm), and various cross sections, such as solid and hollow shape, have been manufactured from the braidtrusion process. The tensile and bending tests for the case of the hybrid rebar, the conventional GFRP rebar, and the steel bar have been carried out. The results of the experiments show that the hybrid rebar is superior to the conventional GFRP rebar and the steel bar, from the viewpoint of tensile and bending characteristics.
In this study, the effect of various adhesively bonded composite patches on mechanical properties of notched Al-Mg alloy plates was analyzed. For this purpose firstly, the un-notched and notched specimens were fabricated from 5086 Al-Mg alloys which have been used in armor-plated military vehicles. The surface notches as a flaw were machined with circular cutting tool to form notch aspect ratio a/c=0.15 and notch-to-thickness ratios a/t=0.5 in the radial direction on the test specimens. Then, various composite patches which reinforced by glass, carbon and Kevlar fibers were bonded adhesively at elliptically surface notches. Finally, experimental measurements conducted by applying tensile static loading. The experimental results showed that repairing with composite patches with order of carbon, glass and Kevlar fibers have remarkable effect on tensile strength of the notched plate. Also the finite element models were developed using Abaqus/Explicit code to predict the tensile strength and elongation of unrepaired notched specimen and specimen repaired by carbon fiber composite patch. The comparison between numerical and experimental results showed good agreement between them and proved the accuracy of numerical modeling.
High performance materials such as Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) are often used for retrofitting structures against blast loads due to its ductility and strength. The effectiveness of retrofit materials needs to be precisely evaluated for the retrofitting design based on the dynamic material responses under blast loads. In this study, the blast resistance of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and Kevlar/Glass hybrid fabric (K/G) retrofitted reinforced concrete (RC) wall is analyzed by using the explicit analysis code LS-DYNA, which accommodates the high-strain rate dependent material models. Also, the retrofit effectiveness of FRP fabrics is evaluated by comparing the analysis results for non-retrofitted and retrofitted walls. The verification of the analysis is performed through comparisons with the previous experimental results.
