Purpose: The aim of the current study was to develop a computer-assisted detection system based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm and to evaluate the potential usefulness and accuracy of this system for the diagnosis and prediction of periodontally compromised teeth (PCT). Methods: Combining pretrained deep CNN architecture and a self-trained network, periapical radiographic images were used to determine the optimal CNN algorithm and weights. The diagnostic and predictive accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, area under the ROC curve, confusion matrix, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using our deep CNN algorithm, based on a Keras framework in Python. Results: The periapical radiographic dataset was split into training (n=1,044), validation (n=348), and test (n=348) datasets. With the deep learning algorithm, the diagnostic accuracy for PCT was 81.0% for premolars and 76.7% for molars. Using 64 premolars and 64 molars that were clinically diagnosed as severe PCT, the accuracy of predicting extraction was 82.8% (95% CI, 70.1%-91.2%) for premolars and 73.4% (95% CI, 59.9%-84.0%) for molars. Conclusions: We demonstrated that the deep CNN algorithm was useful for assessing the diagnosis and predictability of PCT. Therefore, with further optimization of the PCT dataset and improvements in the algorithm, a computer-aided detection system can be expected to become an effective and efficient method of diagnosing and predicting PCT.

This paper studies the effect of the number of filters in the CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) layer on the performance of a noise attenuator. Speech is estimated from a noised speech signal using a 64-neuron, 16-kernel CNN filter and an error back-propagation algorithm. In this study, in order to verify the performance of the noise attenuator with respect to the number of filters, a program using Keras library was written and simulation was performed. As a result of simulation, it can be seen that this system has the smallest MSE (Mean Squared Error) and MAE (Mean Absolute Error) values when the number of filters is 16, and the performance is the lowest when there are 4 filters. And when there are more than 8 filters, it was shown that the MSE and MAE values do not differ significantly depending on the number of filters. From these results, it can be seen that about 8 or more filters must be used to express the characteristics of the speech signal.

In this paper, we propose an optimal wavelet in a system for canceling background noise of acoustic signals. This system performed Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) instead of the existing Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) and then improved noise cancellation performance through a deep learning process. DWT functions as a multi-resolution band-pass filter and obtains transformation parameters by time-shifting the parent wavelet at each level and using several wavelets whose sizes are scaled. Here, the noise cancellation performance of several wavelets was tested to select the most suitable mother wavelet for analyzing the speech. In this study, to verify the performance of the noise cancellation system for various wavelets, a simulation program using Tensorflow and Keras libraries was created and simulation experiments were performed for the four most commonly used wavelets. As a result of the experiment, the case of using Haar or Daubechies wavelets showed the best noise cancellation performance, and the mean square error(MSE) was significantly improved compared to the case of using other wavelets.
Purpose: Periodontal disease causes tooth loss and is associated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. The present study proposes using a deep learning-based object detection method to identify periodontally compromised teeth on digital panoramic radiographs. A faster regional convolutional neural network (faster R-CNN) which is a state-of-the-art deep detection network, was adapted from the natural image domain using a small annotated clinical data- set. Materials and Methods: In total, 100 digital panoramic radiographs of periodontally compromised patients were retrospectively collected from our hospital's information system and augmented. The periodontally compromised teeth found in each image were annotated by experts in periodontology to obtain the ground truth. The Keras library, which is written in Python, was used to train and test the model on a single NVidia 1080Ti GPU. The faster R-CNN model used a pretrained ResNet architecture. Results: The average precision rate of 0.81 demonstrated that there was a significant region of overlap between the predicted regions and the ground truth. The average recall rate of 0.80 showed that the periodontally compromised teeth regions generated by the detection method excluded healthiest teeth areas. In addition, the model achieved a sensitivity of 0.84, a specificity of 0.88 and an F-measure of 0.81. Conclusion: The faster R-CNN trained on a limited amount of labeled imaging data performed satisfactorily in detecting periodontally compromised teeth. The application of a faster R-CNN to assist in the detection of periodontally compromised teeth may reduce diagnostic effort by saving assessment time and allowing automated screening documentation.
This paper presents a deep learning-based road segmentation framework from very high-resolution orthophotos. The proposed method uses Deep Convolutional Autoencoders for end-to-end mapping of orthophotos to road segmentations. In addition, a set of post-processing steps were applied to make the model outputs GIS-ready data that could be useful for various applications. The optimization of the model's parameters is explained which was conducted via grid search method. The model was trained and implemented in Keras, a high-level deep learning framework run on top of Tensorflow. The results show that the proposed model with the best-obtained hyperparameters could segment road objects from orthophotos at an average accuracy of 88.5%. The results of optimization revealed that the best optimization algorithm and activation function for the studied task are Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) and Exponential Linear Unit (ELU), respectively. In addition, the best numbers of convolutional filters were found to be 8 for the first and second layers and 128 for the third and fourth layers of the proposed network architecture. Moreover, the analysis on the time complexity of the model showed that the model could be trained in 4 hours and 50 minutes on 1024 high-resolution images of size $106{\times}106pixels$, and segment road objects from similar size and resolution images in around 14 minutes. The results show that the deep learning models such as Convolutional Autoencoders could be a best alternative to traditional machine learning models for road segmentation from aerial photographs.
A deep recursive bidirectional Cuda Deep Neural Network Long Short Term Memory (Bi-CuDNNLSTM) layer is recruited in this paper to predict the entire force time histories, and the corresponding hysteresis and backbone curves of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers using experimental fast and slow cyclic tests. The proposed stacked Bi-CuDNNLSTM layers involve multiple uncertain input variables, including horizontal actuator displacements, vertical actuators axial loads, the effective height of the bridge pier, the moment of inertia, and mass. The functional application programming interface in the Keras Python library is utilized to develop a deep learning model considering all the above various input attributes. To have a robust and reliable prediction, the dataset for both the fast and slow cyclic tests is split into three mutually exclusive subsets of training, validation, and testing (unseen). The whole datasets include 17 RC bridge piers tested experimentally ten for fast and seven for slow cyclic tests. The results bring to light that the mean absolute error, as a loss function, is monotonically decreased to zero for both the training and validation datasets after 5000 epochs, and a high level of correlation is observed between the predicted and the experimentally measured values of the force time histories for all the datasets, more than 90%. It can be concluded that the maximum mean of the normalized error, obtained through Box-Whisker plot and Gaussian distribution of normalized error, associated with unseen data is about 10% and 3% for the fast and slow cyclic tests, respectively. In recapitulation, it brings to an end that the stacked Bi-CuDNNLSTM layer implemented in this study has a myriad of benefits in reducing the time and experimental costs for conducting new fast and slow cyclic tests in the future and results in a fast and accurate insight into hysteretic behavior of bridge piers.

The Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect has intensified due to urbanization and heat management at the urban level is treated as an important issue. Green space improvement projects and environmental policies are being implemented as a way to alleviate Urban Heat Islands. Several studies have been conducted to analyze the correlation between urban green areas and heat with linear regression models. However, linear regression models have limitations explaining the correlation between heat and the multitude of variables as heat is a result of a combination of non-linear factors. This study evaluated the Heat Island alleviating effects in Seoul during the summer by using a deep neural network model methodology, which has strengths in areas where it is difficult to analyze data with existing statistical analysis methods due to variable factors and a large amount of data. Wide-area data was acquired using Landsat 8. Seoul was divided into a grid (30m × 30m) and the heat island reduction variables were enter in each grid space to create a data structure that is needed for the construction of a deep neural network using ArcGIS 10.7 and Python3.7 with Keras. This deep neural network was used to analyze the correlation between land surface temperature and the variables. We confirmed that the deep neural network model has high explanatory accuracy. It was found that the cooling effect by NDVI was the greatest, and cooling effects due to the park size and green space proximity were also shown. Previous studies showed that the cooling effects related to park size was 2℃-3℃, and the proximity effect was found to lower the temperature 0.3℃-2.3℃. There is a possibility of overestimation of the results of previous studies. The results of this study can provide objective information for the justification and more effective formation of new urban green areas to alleviate the Urban Heat Island phenomenon in the future.
In order to minimize the human and time consumption required for rock classification, research on rock classification using artificial intelligence (AI) has recently developed. In this study, basic volcanic rocks were subdivided by using polarizing microscope thin section images. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model based on Tensorflow and Keras libraries was self-producted for rock classification. A total of 720 images of olivine basalt, basaltic andesite, olivine tholeiite, trachytic olivine basalt reference specimens were mounted with open nicol, cross nicol, and adding gypsum plates, and trained at the training : test = 7 : 3 ratio. As a result of machine learning, the classification accuracy was over 80-90%. When we confirmed the classification accuracy of each AI model, it is expected that the rock classification method of this model will not be much different from the rock classification process of a geologist. Furthermore, if not only this model but also models that subdivide more diverse rock types are produced and integrated, the AI model that satisfies both the speed of data classification and the accessibility of non-experts can be developed, thereby providing a new framework for basic petrology research.

Some innovative researchers have had a dream of self-thinking intelligent computer. Alphago, at last, showed its possibility. With it, most computer engineers including even students can learn easily how to do it. As the interest to the deep learning has been growing, people's expectation is also naturally growing. In this research, we tried to enhance the game ability of a 7-poker system by applying machine learning techniques. In addition, we also tried to apply emotion analysis of a player to trace ones emotional changes. Methods and outcomes are to be explained in this paper.
Quantitative forecasting of groundwater levels for the assessment of groundwater variation and vulnerability is very important. To achieve this purpose, various time series analysis and machine learning techniques have been used. In this study, we developed a prediction model based on LSTM (Long short term memory), one of the artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms, for predicting the daily groundwater level of 11 groundwater wells in Hankyung-myeon, Jeju Island. In general, the groundwater level in Jeju Island is highly autocorrelated with tides and reflected the effects of precipitation. In order to construct an input and output variables based on the characteristics of addressing data, the precipitation data of the corresponding period was added to the groundwater level data. The LSTM neural network was trained using the initial 365-day data showing the four seasons and the remaining data were used for verification to evaluate the fitness of the predictive model. The model was developed using Keras, a Python-based deep learning framework, and the NVIDIA CUDA architecture was implemented to enhance the learning speed. As a result of learning and verifying the groundwater level variation using the LSTM neural network, the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.98 on average, indicating that the predictive model developed was very accurate.
