Sea Level Variability at a Synoptic Band along the East Coast of Korea and its Causal Mechanism (한국 동해연안의 종관주기 해수면 변동 특성과 발생원인)

  • Sea level and atmospheric pressure data of 1999-2005 from four stations along the Korean east coast were analyzed to understand the sea level variability and its causal mechanism. The results of the wavelet and the auto-spectrum analyses indicate that the sea level fluctuations of 3-17 day period are statistically significant at the 95% confidence level, especially in spring to early summer. In this period, the coherency between the sea levels and the atmospheric pressures in a cross-spectrum is high, implying the importance of an inverted barometric effect in generation of the sea level fluctuations. To learn about the sea level variability, the cross-spectrum analyses were applied between the sea levels of the adjacent stations. The results show a case of southward phase propagations along the coast, as in 1999, 2003 and 2005, and an another case of no progressive phase lags between the stations, as in 2000-2002, and 2004. The phase speed in the former case is 12-15 m/s, which is a commonly observed phase speed of coastal Kelvin waves. Generation of such fluctuations seems to be related to low pressure cells developed in the Asian continent in spring and summer and moving eastward over the coastal region north of the stations. The latter case of no progressive phase lag, however, occurs when the low pressure cells developed in the continent move along the region south of the stations. In this case, the northeastward phase propagation with a speed of 5-8 m/s is observed along the southwestern coast of Japan.

Construction of an Underground Heat Exchanger for Pig Housing (양돈용 지열교환기의 개발)

  • To use the earth heat for the pig housing, an underground heat exchanger has constructed in depth of 2.5m and 20m length. The temperature of the outlet air was max. 8 kelvin higher than that of inlet air in winter season. In spite of the -7$^{\circ}C$ outside temperature, it could keep the air temperature from the earth tube above zero degree. The heating performance was maximum in value of 3.25Wh/㎥ and average of 1.75Wh/㎥ by the airflow volume of 340㎥/h. The slope of relative humidity from outlet air has shown gentler than that of inlet air. By using the underground heat exchanger, it would be possible to prepare an relatively uniform relative humidity in the swine stalls. The temperatures on the earth, where PVC pipes are buried, have shown 10~12$^{\circ}C$ on March. This can reduce the difference between day and night temperature during this season by using the underground heat exchanger.

  • 디스플레이는 다수의 가로 전극과 세로 전극으로 구성되고, 전극에 신호를 주어 동작하도록 하는 원리이다. 이 디스플레이에는 전기가 통하고 투명한 전극이 필수적으로 사용되고 있고, 대표적인 투명 전극으로 ITO (Indium Tin Oxide)가 있다. ITO 박막은 $In_2O_3$에 Sn을 첨가하여 $Sn^{4+}$ 이온이 $In^{3+}$ 이온을 치환하고 이 과정에서 잉여 전자가 전기전도에 기여하는 구조이다. ITO 박막은 표면 처리 방법에 따라 표면 상태가 크게 변화한다. 플라즈마를 이용한 표면 처리는 환경오염이 적으며 강도, 탄성률 등과 같은 재료의 기계적 특성을 변화시키지 않으면서 표면 특성만을 변화시킬 수 있는 방법으로 알려져 있다[1]. UV (Ultraviolet)를 조사한 표면처리는 ITO 표면의 탄소를 제거하고, 표면 쌍극자를 형성하며, 표면의 조성을 변화시킬 수 있으며, 페르미 에너지 준위를 이동시킬 수 있어 ITO의 일함수를 증가시킬 수 있다[2]. ITO에 대한 다양한 연구가 수행되었음에도 불구하고 보다 다양한 관점에서의 연구가 지속될 필요가 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 다양한 조건으로 표면 처리한 ITO 표면의 일함수, 면저항, 표면 형상, 평탄도, 접촉각 등에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 세정한 ITO, 세정 후 UV 처리한 ITO (UV 처리 시간 2분, 4분 6분, 8분), 세정 후 $N_2$, $O_2$, Ar의 공정 가스를 사용하여 Plasma 처리한 ITO로 표면 처리 조건을 변화하였다. 표면 처리한 ITO의 특성은 Kelvin Probe를 이용한 일함수, 물방울 형상의 각도를 측정한 접촉각, AFM (Atomic Force Microscope)을 이용한 평탄도, 가시광선 (380~780 nm) 파장에 대한 투과도와 면저항을 측정하였다. 접촉각은 세정한 ITO의 경우 $45.5^{\circ}$에서 세정 후 UV를 조사한 ITO의 경우 UV 8분 조사 시 $27.86^{\circ}$로 감소하였고, $N_2$, $O_2$, Ar 가스를 사용하여 Plasma 처리한 ITO는 모두 $10^{\circ}$ 미만을 나타내었다. 플라즈마 처리에 의하여 접촉각이 현저하게 개선되었다. ITO의 면저항은 표면 처리 조건에 따라 $9.620{\sim}9.903{\Omega}/{\square}$로 그 차이가 매우 적어 표면처리에 의하여 면저항의 변화는 없는 것으로 판단된다. 가시광선 영역에서의 투과도는 공정 조건에 따라 87.59 ~ 89.39%로 그 차이가 적어 표면처리에 의한 변화를 나타내지는 않은 것으로 판단된다. 표면 처리 조건에 따른 평탄도 $R_{rms}$는 세정한 ITO의 경우 4.501 nm로부터 UV 2, 4, 6, 8분 처리한 경우 2.797, 2.659, 2.538, 2.584 nm로 평탄도가 개선되었다. $N_2$, $O_2$, Ar 가스를 사용하여 플라즈마 처리한 ITO의 경우 평탄도 $R_{rms}$는 2.49, 4.715, 4.176 nm로 사용한 가스의 종류에 따라 다른 경향을 나타내었다. 표면 처리 조건에 따른 평탄도 Ra는 세정한 ITO의 경우 3.521 nm로부터 UV 2, 4, 6, 8분 처리한 경우 1.858, 1.967, 1.896, 1.942 nm를, $N_2$, $O_2$, Ar 가스를 사용하여 플라즈마 처리한 ITO의 경우는 1.744, 3.206, 3.251 nm로 평탄도 $R_{rms}$와 유사한 경향을 나타내었다.

Size-resolved Source Apportionment of Ambient Particles by Positive Matrix Factorization at Gosan, Jeju Island during ACE-Asia (PMF 분석을 이용한 ACE-Asia 측정기간 중 제주 고산지역 입자상 물질의 입경별 발생원 추정)

  • Size-and time-resolved aerosol samples were collected using an eight-stage Davis rotating unit for monitoring (DRUM) sampler from 23 March to 29 April 2001 at Gosan, Jeju Island, Korea, which is one of the super sites of Asia-Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment(ACE-Asia). These samples were analyzed using synchrotron X-ray fluorescence for 3-hr average concentrations of 19 elements including Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, and Pb. The size-resolved data sets were then analyzed using the positive matrix factorization(PMF) technique to identify possible sources and estimate their contributions to particulate matter mass. PMF analysis uses the uncertainty of the measured data to provide an optimal weighting. Twelve sources were resolved in eight size ranges($0.09{\sim}12{\mu}m$) and included continental soil, local soil, sea salt, biomass/biofuel burning, coal combustion, oil combustion, municipal incineration, nonferrous metal source, ferrous metal source, gasoline vehicle, diesel vehicle, and volcanic emission. The PMF result of size-resolved source contributions showed that natural sources represented by local soil, sea salt, continental soil, and volcanic emission contributed about 79% to the predicted primary particulate matter(PM) mass in the coarse size range ($1.15{\sim}12{\mu}m$) while anthropogenic sources such as coal combustion and biomass/biofuel burning contributed about 58% in the fine size range($0.56{\sim}2.5{\mu}m$). The diesel vehicle source contributed mostly in ultra-fine size range($0.09{\sim}0.56{\mu}m$) and was responsible for about 56% of the primary PM mass.

Estimation of Daily Net Radiation from Synoptic Meteorological Data (종관기상자료에 의한 순폭사량 추정)

  • Five models for net radiation estimation reported by Linacre(1968), Berljand(1956), Nakayama et al. (1983), Chang (1970) and Doorenbos et al. (1977) were tested for the adaptability to Korea. A new model with effective longwave radiation term parameterized by air temperature, solar radiation and vapor pressure was formulated and tested for its accuracy. Above five models with original parameter values showed large absolute mean deviations ranging from 0.86 to 1.64 MJ/$m^2$/day. The parameters of the above five models were reestimated by using net radiation and meteorological elements measured in Suwon, Korea. These five models with new parameter values showed absolute mean deviations ranging from 0.74 to 0.88 MJ/$m^2$/day. The following model was newly formulated: Rn=(1- $\alpha$) Rs- $\sigma$ $T_{k}$$^{4}$ (0.0103 Exp (0 .0731 Rs) -0.0475 (equation omitted) +0 .2478) ($R^2$=0.997, n=63) where $\alpha$ =albedo, $\sigma$=Stefan-Boltzmann constant, Rs=solar radiation in MJ/$m^2$/day, Tk =air temperature in Kelvin and $e_{a}$=vapor pressure in mb. This model revealed 0.4988 MJ/$m^2$/day in absolute mean deviation when applied to an independent set of meteorological data.a.a.

A Numerical Method for Nonlinear Wave-Making Phenomena (비선형 조파현상의 수치해법)

  • A numerical method for nonlinear free-surface-wave problem is developed in this paper. The final goal of this study is to simulate the towing tank experiment of a ship model and to partially replace the experiment by the numerical model. The exact problem in the scope of potential flow theory is formulated by a variational principle based on the classical Hamilton's principle. A localized finite element method is used in the present numerical computations which made use of the following two notable steps. The first step is an efficient treatment of the numerical radiation condition by using the intermediate nonlinear-to-linear transition buffer subdomain between the fully nonlinear and linear subdomains. The second is the use of a modal analysis in the final stage of the solution procedures, which enables us to reduce the computation time drastically. With these improvements the present method can treat a much larger computational domain than that was possible previously. A pressure patch on the free surface was chosen as an example. From the present computed results we could investigate the effect of nonlinearity on the down-stream wave pattern more clearly than others, because much larger computational domain was treated. We found, specifically, the widening of the Kelvin angle and the increase of the wave numbers and the magnitude of wave profiles.

Clean-up of the Crude Oil Contaminated Marine Sediments Through Biocarrier-Mediated Bioaugmentation (생물담체 활용 생물접종에 의한 원유로 오염된 해양토양의 정화)

  • This study was carried out to develop an effective biocarrier-mediated bioaugmentation technology which will be useful for remediation of the crude oil-contaminated marine sediments. Enrichment of several microbial communities was made from several oil-polluted seashore sites and the two distinctively functional consortia have been successfully selected. These two consortia were grown together and used to manufacture the microbial agents for bioaugmentation of marine sediments polluted with crude oil. The most dominant species in the mixed culture was identified as Alcanivorax borkumensis based on pure culture and DGGE analysis. Bioaugmentation of oil-polluted marine sediments with the microbial agent MA-2 formulated using the mixed culture and biocarriers (activated carbon and minerals) was more effective, especially in combination with an oxygen producing (releasing) compound (ORC). Ninty percent of TPH was removed in the presence of ORC in 35 days while 74% in the absence of ORC. This indicated that the indigenous consortial degraders could be immobilized on the active carbon as a biocarrier to manufacture microbial agents and then effectively bioaugmented for remediation of the oil-polluted sediments.
