  • This study deals with the removal of mercury species using a packed-bed column with spherical aminated chitosan material. These adsorbents revealed a high adsorption capacity for mercury species. Experiments with feed solutions of 10 ppm Hg dissolved in distilled water showed an excellent removal with a sharp increase of the filter effluent concentration after a total throughput of 900 bed volumes of feed water. Up to $95\%$ desorption was reached by using 3 bed volumes of 0.01 N EDTA solution. EDTA could be recovered by means of sulfuric acid with about $75\%$ efficiency. Almost the same results were obtained in repeated sorption and desorption experiments at identical conditions. The experiments demonstrated that the sorbents possessed practically no sorption capacity for alkaline earth ions ($Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$). Their influence on the sorption of mercury was negligible. In experiments with spiked tap water of the Karlsruhe Research Centre and a feed mercury concentration of 0.01 mg/l, the breakthrough of Hg was observed only after a total throughput of about 6,000 bed volumes of feed water.

  • Thermal resistance of dried bacterial spores against dry heat was determined. Spare suspensions of Bacillus subtilis var. niger ATCC 9372, Bacillus stearothermophilus Oxoid Code BR 23 and Clostridium sporogenes ATCC 19404 were located on aluminium strips, dried in electric oven under vacuum at room temperature for 10 minutes. The aluminium strips were laid in the middle of gas flow (hot air and superheated steam) with the velocity of 6 m/sec and heated at $120^{\circ}C$ for 180 seconds. The calculated D-values showed that there were no remarkable differences in the heat resistance of bacterial spares between $R.H.\leqq0.012$ and R. H.=0.51. Furthermore the thermal resistance of B. subtilis spores to dry heat was greater than that of B. stearothermophilus.

  • For evaluating participation in collaboration project, the peer assement method is mostly used and various scoring methods have been proposed. But, the reliability and validity of the peer assessment method are still doubted for all most method. In order to overcome these weaknesss, some guidelines and training methods have been recommended. In this article, however, statistical technique is proposed for measuring individual contributions to collaboration projects considering each assessor's reliability. The gist of our proposed algorithm is that an assessor's reliability depends on the evaluation policy, and this reliability is evaluated by an analysis of variance of the scores assigned by the assessor. We also show that the proposed method is very efficient by case study in university class.

  • The specific configuration of the safety systems in VVER-1000/V320 reactors allows a comprehensive study of the Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA). In the present paper, a verification of the success criteria of the event trees headers for the medium and large break LOCA sequences is conducted. A detailed TRACEV5P5 thermal-hydraulic model of the reactor has been developed, including all safety systems. When analyzing the results of all sequences, some conservatism is observed in certain specific configurations as the success criterion of some headers is not consistent with the classic PSA level 1. Therefore, new proposals for the LOCA event trees are performed based on a reconfiguration of LOCA break ranges and the use of the expanded event trees approach.

  • Rice plants at different seed-developing stages were exposed to HTO vapor in an exposure box for 1 h during daytime and nighttime to investigate the levels of tissue free water $^3H$ (TFWT) and organically bound $^3H$ (OBT) in different plant parts. In the daytime experiment, TFWT concentrations in leaves at the end of exposure $(h_0)$ were around 100% of the 1 hour mean HTO concentrations in air moisture whereas in the nighttime experiment, they were as low as $30{\sim}40%$ of the air concentration. TFWT concentrations in both experiments decreased very rapidly in the beginning but much mote slowly later and those at harvest were hundreds to hundred thousands times lower than those at $h_0$. OBT concentrations varied with time in different manners depending on plant parts and exposure times and differed between at $h_0$ and at harvest by factors of less than 10 on the whole. Even during nighttime exposures, OBT was produced at about a third the rate for daytime exposures. The degree of the conversion of airborne HTO into OBT in mature rice seeds, being several times higher in the daytime experiment than in the nighttime experiment, was highest after the exposure peformed at the most actively seed-developing stage for both experiments. It is estimated that OBT would contribute much more to the ingestion radiation dose than TFWT if rice plants are exposed to HTO vapor for the seed-developing period.

  • Stability of a cylindrical shell subject to a uniform axial compression, which is a power function of time, is examined within the framework of small strain elasto-plasticity. The material of the shell is incompressible and the effect of the elastic unloading is considered. Initially, employing the infinitesimal elastic-plastic deformation theory, the fundamental relations and Donnell type stability equations for a cylindrical shell have been obtained. Then, employing Galerkin's method, those equations have been reduced to a time dependent differential equation with variable coefficient. Finally, for two initial conditions applying a Ritz type variational method, the critical static and dynamic axial loads, the corresponding wave numbers and dynamic factor have been found. Using those results, the effects of the variations of loading parameters and the variations of power of time in the axial load expression as well as the variations of the radius to thickness ratio on the critical parameters of the shells for two initial conditions are also elucidated. Comparing results with those in the literature validates the present analysis.

  • The bed evolution of the stretch of the River Rhine between km-812.5 and km-821.5 is characterised by general bed degradation as a result of the river training works and dredging activities of the last two centuries. The degradation of the river bed affects the water levels, and so the navigation conditions. To combat the erosion of the river bed with the aim to keep up the shipping traffic and to avoid the ecological system damages due to water level reductions, sand-gravel-mixtures were added to the river (so called artificial grain feeding activities). This paper presents the results of an application of a graded sediment transport model in order to study morpholodynamical characteristics due to artificial grain feeding activities in the river stretch. The finite element code TELEMAC2D was used for flow calculation by solving the 2D shallow water equation on non-structured grids. The sediment transport module SISYPHE has been developed for graded sediment transport using a multiple layer model. The needs to apply such graded sediment transport approaches to study morphological processes in the domain are discussed. The calculations have been carried out for the case of middle water flow and different size-fraction distributions. The results show that the grain feeding process could be well simulated by the model.

  • A geochemical approach to the long-term safety of waste disposal is discussed in connection with the significance of actinides, which shall deliver the major radioactivity inventory subsequent to the relatively short-term decay of fission products. Every power reactor generates transuranic (TRU) elements: plutonium and minor actinides (Np, Am, Cm), which consist chiefly of long-lived nuclides emitting alpha radiation. The amount of TRU actinides generated in a fuel life period is found to be relatively small (about 1 wt% or less in spent fuel) but their radioactivity persists many hundred thousands years. Geological confinement of waste containing TRU actinides demands, as a result, fundamental knowledge on the geochemical behavior of actinides in the repository environment for a long period of time. Appraisal of the scientific progress in this subject area is the main objective of the present paper. Following the introductory discussion on natural radioactivities, the nuclear fuel cycle is briefly brought up with reference to actinide generation and waste disposal. As the long-term disposal safety concerns inevitably with actinides, the significance of the aquatic actinide chemistry is summarized in two parts: the fundamental properties relevant to their aquatic behavior and the geochemical reactions in nanoscopic scale. The constrained space of writing allows discussion on some examples only, for which topics of the primary concern are selected, e.g. apparent solubility and colloid generation, colloid-facilitated migration, notable speciation of such processes, etc. Discussion is summed up to end with how to make a geochemical approach available for the long-term disposal safety of nuclear waste or for the performance assessment (PA) as known generally.
