A plane field and a sloped field located at low-land plane and alpine areas, respectively, were monitored with respect to runoff, water quality and fertilizer uses from March to December, 2008. Runoff volume and Non-Point Source (NPS) loads were estimated and analyzed with respect to fertilizer uses. Total TN and TP loads from the sloped field were higher than those from plane field because of larger chemical uses in the alpine field than in the plane field. Organic matter load from plane field was higher than that from sloped field because more organic compost was applied to plane field than to sloped field. Event Mean Concentration (EMC) of measured water quality indices were relatively higher in both fields. Organic matter load per 1 mm rainfall were higher in plane field and TN and TP loads per 1 mm rainfall were higher in sloped field than those in respective comparing field. It was concluded that the type and application method of fertilizer could play an important role in the estimation of NPS pollution loads and the development of Best Management Practices (BMPs). However, it was recommended that long-term monitoring is necessary to better describe the relationship between fertilizer uses and water quality from agricultural fields because numerous natural and management factors other than fertilizer also affect runoff quality.
This study investigates to identify the impact factors of timber production cost on the relationship between production cost components and revenues generated by evaluating the entire timber supply chain. In this research, selected 13 logging zones as target areas and classified 14 forest production cost factors, six groups. Additionally, established 13 externalenvironmental factors with related stakeholders and forestry experts. And the BCR (Benefit Cost Ratio) method was then used to analyze the economics of each zone. Filled up a checklist and rated using 5 point scale for each target region, and extracted major cost factors for the production economy of the item. The analysis of major cost factors in the timber production revealed that wood grab equipment usage fee was the first ranked and forest trees purchase cost was ranked in the $2^{nd}$Also, the $3^{rd}$ranking was logging expenses, and transport cost, which accounted for 84% of the total cost, was ranked in the $4^{th}$. In addition, the rock land ratio, slope, timber payment (forest trees purchase cost), special timber, ratio of timber, DBH (Diameter at Breast Height), and mixed forest ratio were the factors that most affected the timber supply chain cost.

Seeds of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge were collected from two plantations and two superior trees in Inner Mongolia: and one plantation and one superior tree in Liaoning, China in late August, 2011. Yellowhorn or goldenhorn is an important tree species, from the aspects of source of edible oil and biodiesel and pioneering capacity of degraded and desert land. Characteristics investigated were seed length, width, and weight: weight and volume of 1,000 seeds: and weight and volume of one-liter seeds. The seeds of Qingsonglingxiang No. 1, growing alone in an open space, showed the highest values in seed length (16.08 mm), width (14.48 mm) and weight (1.40 g), while those of Tree No. 160 in Ar Khorqin Banner were the lowest ones: that is, 11.48mm for length, 11.81 mm for width, and 0.73 g for weight, respectively. Traits of seeds varied quite much between trees and among areas; for example, Tree No. 38 and No. 160 produced quite different seeds in several traits, although they are adjacent to each other in the same farm. Weight of 1,000 seeds varied from 718.0 g to 1,010.1 g and volume from 0.76 L to 1.52 L. Weight of one-liter seeds were 522.3 g to 688.2 g, while the number of seeds were 603 to 935. Seeds which were soaked in the water at $4^{\circ}C$ for 2 days showed the highest germination rate (89%) in a 30-day test, which was about 10% to 40% higher than those of non-treatment and dipping treatment at $36^{\circ}C$ followed by keeping under room temperature for 2 days. 81% of seeds in the wet sand at room temperature germinated, while 23% of seeds deprived of seed coat germinated. It is necessary to understand seed traits to select superior clones or provenances for the increased, unfluctuating production of seed.
This study purposed to extract and assess the accuracy of assessment for deforestation area in Wonju city using medium resolution satellite image. The total size of deforestation area during the last nine years (2000-2008) was about 467 ha, and it was occurred annually about 52 ha. The most frequent form of deforestation was settlements (72%). Ninety percent of the size of deforestation was less than 2 ha in size. In addition, 79 percent of deforestation area was found within 500 m from the road network and within 100 m of the Forest/Non-forest boundary. This study compared the deforestation based on the administrative information (GIS deforestationI) with the deforestation (RS deforestation) extracted from the satellite imagery by vegetation indices (NDVI, NBR, NDWI). Extraction accuracy, mean-standard deviation${\times}1.5$ applied 3 by 3 filtering, showed reliable accuracy 35.47% k-value 0.20. However, error could be occurred because of the difference of land-use change and land-cover change. The actual rate of land-cover change deforestation area was 32% on administrative information. The 7.52% of forest management activities area was misjudged as deforestation by RS deforestation. Finally, the comparison of land-cover change deforestation (GIS deforestationII) with the RS deforestation accuracy, as a result NDVI mean-standard deviation${\times}2$ applied 3 by 3 filtering, showed improved accuracy 61.23%, k-value 0.23.

In this study, to estimate the transforming (runoff and leachate) rate of the organic fertilizer made of livestock resources to farm land, laboratory scale test was conducted and the results were obtained as follows: The runoff volume from farm land showed the tendency of increase according to the increase of rainfall intensity. The most rainfall leachated into the underground at the rainfall intensity of 20mm/hr, and rainfall of 5L or less leachated at the rainfall intensity of > 32.4 mm/hr. This shows that surface runoff largely depends on the rainfall intensity when soil characteristic and hardness are similar in each site. When liquid compost was fertilized, the surface runoff was similar with the results from the reactor fertilized by compost, and leachate flow was found to be lower than compost. The runoff ratio of contaminant parameters from farm land were BOD 0.00003,, $COD_{cr}$ 0.00006, TN 0.00056, TP 0.00011, TOC 0.00005, Especially, the runoff ratio of TN showed 10 folds higher than other parameters. On the other hand, the runoff ratio of SS showed higher value of 0.001, and colloid particles of soil caused this result rather than the leachate from compost fertilizer. At all ranges of rainfall intensity, fertilizer removal ratio by farm land was found to be 94.9~98.4% for compost and 85.8~98.1% for liquid compost in terms of BOD. For TN, it resulted in 96.6~98.4% for compost and 97.2~98.5% for liquid compost, and thus the most fertilizer from livestock resources were shown to be reduced through farm land application.
Environmental policies and industry practices have recently seen a gradual paradigm shift from reactive management to proactive prevention of environmental impacts. Accordingly, preventive conservation policies are carried out to address the increasing value of protecting soils and soil functions as resources are limited. To propose a direction for future soil erosion research, we analyzed domestic and international research trends of soil erosion, based on journal papers retrieved from the Web of Science databases over the last decade, using VOSviewer for keyword co-occurrence analysis. The results showed that the number of publications on soil erosion per land area in Korea ranked high worldwide. In particular, studies on the soil erosion control were found to account for a more significant proportion than other countries. The active ongoing studies on soil erosion in Korea indicate that the country has recognized the severity of soil erosion resulting from climate, topography, and land use. However, the number of keywords found in the studies on the soil erosion control in Korea was relatively smaller than those found at the international level, indicating the need to diversify and expand the study subjects. In particular, studies on the soil erosion process and the related physical and chemical soil properties are necessary to find the fundamental solutions to soil erosion problems.
The situation and the problems of the management of public forest owend by Kangweon provincial and Taebaek municipal govenments were investigated throughout literature and field survey. The results were as follows; 1. Kangweon provincial forest is 25,896ha and Taebaek municipal forest is 550ha, which consists of Kangweon provincial forest, 470ha and municipal forest, 80ha. Taebaek city is responsible for the management of the province-owned forest in its administrative district in addition to its own forest. 2. Except San 1-2Changjookdong (443ha) which is leased by Dai Han Coal. Coporation for mining coal, the remaining forest (107ha) consists of 32 scattered, small-area forest lands. 3. Due to small area and dispersal of municipal forest, the management base for forest production is not sound and the management at present is nearly absent. Based on these actual conditions, the following suggestions are provided for the rationalization for the municipal forest management. First, scattered, small-scale forests should be gathered to prepare a management complex. Second, the sustaining production of timber should be attained through the estblishment of systematic management plan. Third, the reasonable system for forest land utiliztion shoule be established in consideration of the recreational use of public forest.
For the investigation of the potentials of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi on pine seedlings for reforestation on fire-damaged forest lands, six months old seedlings of Pinus densiflora, which were artificially inoculated or non-inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius, were transplanted into the fire-damaged forest land. Seedling mortality was recorded as 3.5% for the seedlings inoculated with P. tinctorius at three months after transplanting, while it was 70.5% for the non-inoculated seedlings. Mycorrhizal root formation was shown as typically Y-branched type, and thier rate was 82% for inoculated seedlings, but it was 52% for non-inoculated. Comaprisons in seedling height, fresh weight, and dry weight between pine seedlings inoculated or non-inoculated with P. tinctorius at every 3 months till 9 months after transplanting showed that the inoculated seedlings were much better in all criteria as compared to the non-inoculated at the level of 63%, 35%, 18% in seedling height, 206%, 114%, 70% in fresh weight, and 187%, 109%, 63% in dry weight, respectively. The percentages were decreased by the elapse of time, which indicate that P. tinctorius give a growth-stimulating effects on seedlings at the early stage. T/R ratio for inoculated and non-inoculated seedlings after 9 months was 1.75 and 1.90, respectively.

Anatomical characteristics of volumetric composition, fiber length, vessel diameter, and crystalline properties of cellulose in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) planted in the reclaimed land of Buan-si, Korea were examined to understand the growth characteristics using a light microscopy and an X-ray diffraction method. The samples of kenaf were taken from six positions (3 cm, 35 cm, 70 cm, 105 cm, 280 cm, and 320 cm) of each stem over the growth period (July, August, September, and October) after seeding in the mid-May. In the kenaf stem, phloem constituted 10 to 15 %, xylem 66 to 82%, and pith 7 to 19%. The ray, bast fiber, and remainder comprised 50%, 20%, and 30% of the phloem, respectively. The volume of vessel, ray, and fiber in the xylem was approximately 10, 15, and 75%, respectively. The proportion of cell wall was 30.92% at the base of stem and 46.40% at the top of stem, respectively. The average length of bast fiber and xylem fiber was about 2.8 mm and 0.9 mm, respectively. Radial and tangential diameters of vessel increased with the increase of growth period, while they decreased with increasing the stem height. Relative crystallinity ranged from 70 to 79% in phloem and from 50 to 56% in xylem. Cellulose crystallite width was about 3 nm both in the phloem and xylem. Thus, the volumetric composition and cell dimensions in the phloem and xylem appeared to be varied with the growth period and the stem height.
The hydrologic models, capable of simulating groundwater recharge for long-term period and effects on it of crops management in the agricultural areas, have been used to compute groundwater recharge in the agricultural fields. Among these models, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been widely used because it could interpret hydrologic conditions for the long time considering effects of weather condition, land uses, and soil. However the SWAT model couldn't represent the spatial information of Hydrologic Response Unit (HRU), the SWAT HRU mapping module was developed in 2010. With this capability, it is possible to assume and analyze spatio-temporal groundwater recharge. In this study, groundwater recharge of rate for various crops in the Mandae stream watershed was estimated using SWAT HRU Mapping module, which can simulate spato-temporal recharge rate. As a result of this study, Coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) for flow calibration were 0.80 and 0.72, respectively, and monthly groundwater recharge of Mandae watershed in Haean-myeon was 381.24 mm/year. It was 28% of total precipitation in 2009. Groundwater recharge rate was 73.54 mm/month and 73.58 mm/month for July and August 2009, which is approximately 18 times of groundwater recharge rate for December 2009. The groundwater recharges for each month through the year were varying. The groundwater recharge was smaller in the spring and winter seasons, relatively. So, it is necessary to enforce proper management of groundwater recharge during droughty season. Also, the SWAT HRU Mapping module could show the result of groundwater recharge as a GIS map and analyze spatio-temporal groundwater recharge. So, this method, proposed in this study, would be quite useful to make groundwater management plans at agriculture-dominant watershed.
