  • The possibility of ASR(alkali-silica reaction) for coarse aggregates had known to be low up to recently in Korea. But the distress of ASR was identified and reported by ASTM C 1260 test. The purpose of this paper was to identify the effect of environmental conditions on length expansion of mortar-bar by alkali-silica reaction with KS F 2546 and ASTM C 1260 test. The results of this study were as following; The result of KS F 2546 test for five kinds of aggregates shows that all of them are non-reactive. But that of ASTM C 1260 test shows that all of aggregates except Andesite-2 are over possible reactive because of environmental condition such as external alkali ion by 1N NaOH, high temperature and humidity. The result of variety of NaOH concentration on ASTM C 1260 using Siltstone indicates that length expansion rate increases highly as NaOH concentration increases. And, comparison results of KS F 2546 for Siltstone with that of 0.00N NaOH experiment indicates that length expansion rate increases as temperature and humidity increases.

  • As a part of the movement of natural resources conservation, there have been doing many recycling research works for obsolete aged tire, wasted plastic materials, etc. The purpose of this experimental study is to develop glass concrete by recycling wasted glasses as a cementitious constituent in concrete. First of all, the optimum replacement ratio of powdered waste glasses(PWG) can be determined through pilot compressive strength test on normal and high strength concrete cylinders, which have been made in various mix proportions by changing the replacement ratio of PWG. Then, further tests have been done to figure out mechanical properties of most desirable glass concrete with optimum replacement ratio of PWG, such as static modulus of elasticity, compressive and tensile strengths, flexural strength. On the other hand, the alkali-silica reactions by the mortar-bar method(KS F 2546) have been experimentally doing in various grain sizes of PWG, since the alkali in the cement has a tendency to react with the silica in the PWG. In can be confirmed from the test that glass concrete can have better workability than concrete with silica fume, and they are alike in compressive strength. It is concluded that wasted glasses can be used as pratical additives for economic and environmentally friendly concrete.

  • It has been well known that the alkali-aggregate reaction between the aggregates and cement paste is one of the reasons of a concrete siructre expansion. Because of a serious demage on the concrete stnicture from the expansion, in many countries, the safety of the materials is checked in laboratory by mortar-bar test and the upper limit of expansion in length is 0.1%. The prescriptions are presented in the ASTM C227 and 490 of U.S. which has been international currency and in the KS Handbook F2503, F2546 and L5107 of Korea published by Korean Standards Association. Both of the prescriptions are almost same in their contents. Actually, in the process of preparing and measuring the mortar-bar according to the prescription mentioned above, it seems that there are no problems for its own purpose but a few points are found to be improved upon the methods to increase the accuracy for laboratory work as follows. 1. The prescription of blending ratio(aggregate, cement and water) should be noted by volume not by weight. 2. It is unreasonable to measure the initial length of mortar bars after 24$\pm$2 hours at once regardless the kind of aggregates. 3. It may bring about errors in calculating the expansion ratio under the condition of the denominator value fixed as 254mm. 4. The measuring methods of specific gravity are selected according to the purposes but the pure specific gravity displays the highest accuracy among them.
