The Effects of COVID-19 Knowledge and COVID-19 Health Beliefs on Infection Prevention Behaviors in Elementary and Middle School Students (초·중등학교 청소년의 COVID-19 지식, COVID-19 건강신념이 감염예방행위에 미치는 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to conduct a descriptive survey to examine the knowledge, infection prevention behaviors, and health beliefs regarding COVID-19 and to identify factors that influence infection prevention behaviors in elementary and middle school students based on the Health Belief Model. Methods: The study included 388 elementary and middle school students in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Jeonbuk provinces. Data were collected from September 1 to September 15, 2023. The questionnaire consisted of 10 questions about COVID-19 knowledge, 13 questions about infection prevention behaviors, and 15 questions about health beliefs. The collected data were subjected to multiple hierarchical regression analyses. The cronbach's α of infection prevention behaviors was 0.83, the KR-20 of COVID-19 related knowledge was 0.68, and the Cronbach's α of COVID-19 related health beliefs was 0. 78. Results: In Model 1, females showed higher levels of infection prevention behaviors than males (β=.14, p=.006) and middle school students showed lower levels of infection prevention behaviors than elementary school students (β=-.10, p=.037). In Model 2, among COVID-19-related health beliefs, barriers had a significant negative effect on infection prevention behaviors (β=-.20, p<.001) and cues to action had a significant positive effect on infection prevention behaviors (β=.14, p=.037), indicating that lower barriers and higher cues to action were associated with higher levels of infection prevention behaviors. Conclusion: The results showed that prevention behaviors were associated with lower barriers and higher cues to action among COVID-19 health beliefs. Elementary and middle school students in Korea spend a lot of time in groups at private academies or school, which are closed spaces with poor ventilation, making them vulnerable to new infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Unlike adults, infectious diseases can have serious impact on their mental and social health. Therefore, it is necessary for schools to provide accurate and timely health education about COVID-19 to increase cues to action for elementary and middle school students in order to improve their infection prevention behaviors.

Trichloroethylene Treatment by Zero-Valent Iron and Ferrous Iron with Iron-Reducing Bacteria - Model Development (영가철 및 철환원균을 이용한 2가 산화철 매질에 의한 TCE 제거 연구 - 모델수립)

  • Numerical simulation was carried out to study the trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by permeable reactive barrier (PRB), and revealed the effect of concentration of TCE, iron medium mass, and concentration of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB). Newly developed model was based on axial dispersion reactor model with chemical and biological reaction terms and was implemented using MATLAB ver R2006A for the numerical solutions of dispersion, convection, and reactions over column length and elapsed time. The reaction terms include reactions of TCE degradation by zero-valent iron (ZVI, Fe$^0$) and ferrous iron (Fe$^{2+}$). TCE concentration in the column inlet was maintained as 10 mg/L. Equation for Fe$^0$ degradation includes only TCE reaction term, while one for Fe$^{2+}$ has chemical and biological reaction terms with TCE and IRB, respectively. Two coupled equations eventually modeled the change of TCE concentration in a column. At Fe$^0$ column, TCE degradation rate was found to be more than 99% from 60 hours to 235 hours, and declined to less than 1% in 1,365 hours. At the Fe$^{2+}$ and IRB mixed column, TCE degradation rate was equilibrated at 85.3% after 210 hours and kept it constant. Study on the Analysis of Corneal Variation by Refractive Error (굴절이상에 의한 각막 변화도 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this Study investigated corneal power, corneal astigmatism and corneal axis according to spherical equivalent of refractive error. We measured spherical equivalent, corneal power and corneal astigmatism in 100 subjects from January 2014 to July 2014. Measured spherical equivalent of refractive error were $-3.01{\pm}3.79D$, corneal power of $43.79{\pm}1.60D$ and corneal astigmatism of $-1.17{\pm}0.79D$ respectively. Prevalence of spherical equivalent of refractive error were as follows : myopes (61%), emmetropes (22%), hyperopes(17%). Corneal astigmatism of refractive error greater than +0.75D was 63% and prevalence of corneal astigmatism were as follows : with-the-rlue astigmatism (84.13%), against-the-rule astigmatism(9.52%) respectively. Corneal power by spherical equivalent increased from hyperopia to myopia. Between spherical equivalent of refractive error and the mean corneal power was significant correlation(r=-0.25, p=0.01). A correlation were found between corneal power and spherical equivalent of refractive error in adults. They have the highest distribution of prevalence myopia among the refractive error. When the refractive error was increased, we found that corneal power was steeper. It is recognized that this can be refractive error factor and correct visual function is considered.

Research Trends of the Traditional Korean Medicine Treatment for Atopic Dermatitis -Based on the Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine- (아토피 피부염의 한의학적 치료에 대한 연구 동향 -대한한방소아과학회지를 중심으로-)

  • Objectives The goal of this review was to investigate clinical, experimental and literature studies of Korean medicine on atopic dermatitis (AD) of Korean children in Korean medicine literature, seeking for the better research methods for more effective treatments. Methods Electronic investigations were practiced on AKOP (The Association of Korean Oriental Pediatrics, http://www.akop.or.kr) to collect theses which were published by J Pediatr Korean Med. The key word 'Atopy' was used for searching to ensure that every related thesis was collected. The publication date was limited from 1996 to 2016. The selected literatures were assessed mainly according to distributions of study type, publication year, scale, treatment and its efficacy. Results 55 papers were selected from 59 studies. In these collected 55 related theses, there were 29 experimental studies (52.73%), 18 clinical studies (32.73%), 8 review studies (14.55%). In the 29 experimental studies, there were 20 studies (68.97%) using NC/Nga mouse as subjects. The mite antigen was used to trigger AD by 8 studies (27.59%). The studies have been utilizing DNCB and DNFB instead of mite antigen since 2011. All the experimental studies showed that the Korean medicine was effective in AD. In total 18 clinical studies, 3 studies (16.67%) were case reports, only 1 thesis (5.56%) was conducted by case control study and the rest were case series studies. 7 studies (38.89%) of 18 studies diagnosed AD according to Hanifin and Rajka's diagnostic criteria (1980), only 1 study (5.56%) according to the Korean standard and the rest 10 studies (55.56%) didn't mention diagnostic criteria. 12 clinical studies (66.67%) showed efficacy in treating AD. There were 10 studies (55.56%) only employing internal treatments and 1 thesis (5.56%) didn't mention the exact prescription. Naesowhajungtang-kamibang, Saenghyeoryunbue-um were used 3 times (16.67%) as the internal medicine respectively. 5 theses (27.78%) were combined with acupuncture therapy. Hegu (LI4), Sanyinjiao (SP6) were used in 4 theses, and Taichong (LR3), Quchi (LI11), Zusanli (ST36) in 3 theses. The number of acupoints chosen from The Spleen meridian of Foot-Taiyin was the largest. There were 8 review theses. 2 were about the foreign oriental medicine, 3 were about the external medicine or external treatment methods, and 3 other studies were about severity scoring systems, the methodological study in the latest clinical study, overview for pattern and results of herbal medicine-derived AD clinical researches. Conclusions The experimental studies and clinical studies showed the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatments. However, this study still needs improving by conducting more comparative studies and using better research methods, in order to find more effective treatments to improve clinical efficacy.

An Analysis of Domestic Medicine Study Tendency on Obesity -Focused on The Korean Journal of Obesity- (비만에 대한 국내 의학계의 최근 연구 동향 분석 -대한비만학회지를 중심으로-)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to analyze the recent trend of the studies about obesity in medicine and to provide background for futher studies. Methods: All of the article were selected in "The Korean Journal of Obesity". Search were conducted through "http://kosso.or.kr" with the search word "obesity". Collected articles were classified into clinical study, experimental study, literary study, case report. Results: One hundred eighty four studies were included and analyzed in terms of study design, subject, intervention, period, obesity index and so on. The numbers of clinical studies, literary studies, experimental studies, case reports were respectively 143 (77.7%), 26 (14.1%), 2 (1.1%) and 7 (3.8%). In clinical studies, observational studies were 112 (78.3%) and intervention studies were 31 (21.7%). And most of sample sizes were more than 100 and less than 499. Body mass index, waist circumstance, body fat percent were major criteria of clinical study. Most of the subjects on obesity were about relation with another disease or experimental results and diagnosis. According to classification by the kinds of intervention, diet, exercise, drug, behavior were respectively 22, 18, 8, and 8. More than fourty percent of intervention studies were studied for 12 weeks. Conclusions: To improve the quality of Korean Medicine study for obesity, we need to recruiting big sample size and activate randomized clinical trial.

A Web-based 'Patterns of Care Study' System for Clinical Radiation Oncology in Korea: Development, Launching, and Characteristics (우리나라 임상방사선종양을 위한 웹 기반 PCS 시스템의 개발과 특성)

  • Purpose: We report upon a web-based system for Patterns of Care Study (PCS) devised for Korean radiation oncology. This PCS was designed to establish standard tools for clinical quality assurance, to determine basic parameters for radiation oncology processes, to offer a solid system for cooperative clinical studies and a useful standard database for comparisons with other national databases. Materials and Methods: The system consisted of a main server with two back-ups in other locations. The program uses a Linux operating system and a MySQL database. Cancers with high frequencies in radiotherapy departments in Korea from 1998 to 1999 were chosen to have a developmental priority. Results: The web-based clinical PCS .system for radiotherapy in www.pcs.re.kr was developed in early 2003 for cancers of the breast, rectum, esophagus, larynx and lung, and for brain metastasis. The total number of PCS study items exceeded one thousand. Our PCS system features user-friendliness, double entry checking, data security, encryption, hard disc mirroring, double back-up, and statistical analysis. Alphanumeric data can be input as well as image data. In addition, programs were constructed for IRB submission, random sampling of data, and departmental structure. Conclusion: For the first time in the field of PCS, we have developed a web-based system and associated working programs. With this system, we can gather sample data in a short period and thus save, cost, effort and time. Data audits should be peformed to validate input data. We propose that this system should be considered as a standard method for PCS or similar types of data collection systems.

Analysis of Environmental Effects for Linear Type Traits and Scoring Traits on Holstein Cows (Holstein 젖소의 선형심사형질과 등급형질에 대한 환경효과 분석)

Farm, appraisal year-month, appraisal person should affect linear type and scoring traits. Most of type traits and scoring traits would be significantly affected by parity and lactation stage after absorbing farm-appraisal year-month-person effects. Otherwise, some traits such as traits related to udder would be affected by registration criteria. However, interval of appraisal time and milking time would not affect these traits. The scores related to udder, teat placement and foot angle would be positively related to parity. Final score would be optimized at cows of 2nd and 3rd parities. Dairy form, front teat placement, rear udder height, rear udder width and final score would show similar to pattern of lactation curve at lactation stage. Dairy capacity composite index would also show similar to lactation curve. This result would be indicated that more concise standardizing system for linear type scoring rules would be needed. Furthermore, correcting system for parity and lactation stage would be needed because this factor should affect physiological status, specially, udder status.

The Flora of Mt. Gakhwasan Adjacent to the Baekdudaegan (백두대간에 인접한 각화산 일대의 식물 분포 연구)

  • 경상북도 봉화군에 위치한 각화산(1,177m)은 태백산맥에서 소백산맥으로 갈라지는 기점을 이루는 산으로 구령산, 청옥산, 옥석산 등과 함께 백두대간 일대의 중요한 산으로 인식된다. 특히 각화산은 조선왕조실록을 보관했던 태백산 사고지터(사적 제 348호)를 품고 있는 역사적인 장소이기도 하다. 본 연구는 각화산 일대 관속식물의 분포상을 파악하고자 2017년 5월부터 2018년 9월까지 진행되었다. 연구 결과 조사지 내 관속식물은 92과 291속 413종 4아종 38변종 6품종으로 총 461분류군이 확인되었다. 이는 경상북도 관속식물 1,684분류군(Korea National Arboretum, 2016)의 27.4%, 한반도 관속식물 4,499분류군(Korea National Arboretum, 2018; Http://www.nature.go.kr/kpni/)의 10.2%에 해당되는 것으로 분석되었다. 각화산 일대의 주요 식물 가운데 한국특산식물은 12분류군(할미밀망, 진범, 처녀치마, 지리대사초 등)이 확인되었고, 산림청 지정 희귀식물은 VU등급(꼬리진달래, 노랑무늬붓꽃) 2분류군, LC등급(너도바람꽃, 쥐방울덩굴, 도깨비부채) 3분류군으로 총 5분류군의 희귀식물이 분포하는 것으로 조사되었다. 또한, 식물구계학적 특정식물 IV등급 5분류군, III등급 13분류군, II등급 21분류군, I 등급 25분류군이 확인되었고, 외래식물은 총 24분류군으로 도시화지수(%) 6.8%, 귀화율은 5.2%에 해당되는 것으로 분석되었다. 조사된 식물의 유용성 분석 결과, 식용식물 348분류군(75.5%), 섬유용식물 1분류군(0.2%), 약용식물 기분류군(15.4%), 관상용식물 18분류군(3.9%), 목초용식물 102분류군(22.1%) 목재용식물 14분류군(3.0%) 등으로 확인되었다. 본 연구 결과물은 각화산의 식물 현황을 제시함과 동시에 생태축으로 연결된 백두대간 일대의 효율적인 관리 및 보전 방안을 마련하기 위한 기초자료로 활용 될 것이라 기대한다.

The Flora of Mt. Galbangsan in Bonghwa-gun (봉화군 갈방산 일대의 식물 분포 연구)

  • 경상북도 봉화군에 위치한 갈방산(712m)은 백두대간 옥석산(1,244m)에서 분기한 문수지맥의 산지 가운데 하나다. 본 연구는 갈방산 일대 관속식물의 분포상을 파악하고자 2017년 5월부터 2018년 9월까지 진행되었다. 연구 결과 92과 265속 373종 4아종 44변종 5품종으로 총 426분류군의 관속식물이 조사지에서 확인되었다. 이는 경상북도 관속식물 1,684분류군(Korea National Arboretum, 2016)의 25.3%, 한반도 관속식물 4,499분류군(Korea National Arboretum, 2018; Http://www.nature.go.kr/kpni/)의 9.5%에 해당되는 것으로 분석되었다. 갈방산 일대의 주요 식물 가운데 한국특산식물은 11분류군(키버들, 병꽃나무, 처녀치마 등)이 확인되었고, 산림청 지정 희귀식물은 VU등급(세잎승마) 1분류군, LC등급(도깨비부채, 태백제비꽃) 2분류군으로 총 3분류군의 희귀식물이 분포하는 것으로 조사되었다. 또한, 식물구계학적 특정식물 V등급 1분류군, IV등급 2분류군, III등급 10분류군, II등급 16분류군, I 등급 23분류군이 확인되었고, 외래식물은 총 22분류군으로 도시화지수(%) 6.3%, 귀화율은 5.2%에 해당되는 것으로 분석되었다. 조사된 식물의 유용성 분석 결과, 식용식물 345분류군(81%), 섬유용식물 4분류군(0.9%), 약용식물 85분류군(20.0%), 관상용식물 18분류군(4.2%), 목초용식물 109분류군(25.6%) 목재용식물 15분류군(3.5%) 등으로 확인되었다. 요컨대 갈방산 일대의 식물 현황을 제시함으로써 본 연구 결과물이 갈방산 일대의 희귀특산식물과 유용식물의 보전 및 활용 방안을 마련하기 위한 기초자료로 활용 될 것이라 기대한다.

Bioinformatics services for analyzing massive genomic datasets

  • The explosive growth of next-generation sequencing data has resulted in ultra-large-scale datasets and ensuing computational problems. In Korea, the amount of genomic data has been increasing rapidly in the recent years. Leveraging these big data requires researchers to use large-scale computational resources and analysis pipelines. A promising solution for addressing this computational challenge is cloud computing, where CPUs, memory, storage, and programs are accessible in the form of virtual machines. Here, we present a cloud computing-based system, Bio-Express, that provides user-friendly, cost-effective analysis of massive genomic datasets. Bio-Express is loaded with predefined multi-omics data analysis pipelines, which are divided into genome, transcriptome, epigenome, and metagenome pipelines. Users can employ predefined pipelines or create a new pipeline for analyzing their own omics data. We also developed several web-based services for facilitating downstream analysis of genome data.
