To evaluate the adhesive characteristics of mixed cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic softwoods structural lumber proposed by KS F 3020 and yellow poplar, penetration depth of adhesive and thickness of bonding line were analyzed based on the results of boiling water soaking delamination. 3 Types of adhesives and 2 types of major layer were divided into a 5 ply CLT using yellow popular as minor layer. The bonding performance of the mixed CLT as structural members was evaluated based on the KS F 2081. The thickness of bonding line between layers of the mixed CLT was measured with a scanning electron microscope, and the adhesive penetration depth in the layer members was measured with an optical microscope. As a result of boiling water soaking delamination test of mixed CLT, the CLT specimens using PRF and PUR adhesives met the requirements of KS F 2081. It was verified that the penetration path of the adhesive in the layes was mainly through the tracheid cell in the case of Japanese larch and Korean red pine layers, and through the vessel and radial tissue in yellow popular layers. The penetration depth of the adhesive was the highest for the PRF adhesive under the same pressing time conditions, and the thickness of the bonding line was in inverse proportion to the penetration depth in the case of the PUR adhesive.
Red pine and Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis Gordon) grown in Korea have been the main species of coniferous resources in Korea. Especially, planting area of Japanese larch has been increased continueously in the recent years due to its superior plant type and rapid growth rate and its stocks reached approximately 4.32 million cubic meters at the present time. Although many research works have been done for the utilization of the larch wood in various ways, still many problems are existed in its chemical applications due to a large proportion of soluble extractives. In this study, chemical composition of larch extractives and chemical structure of its major component were analyzed. In order to identify the basic structure of major component, gas-liquid chromatography for separation of some completely methylated alditols as their acetates on a 3% - ECNSS-M on Gas Chrom Q. column was used. Proportion of extractives of Japanese larch wood was higher than that of other conifers and major component of the soluble extractives was arabinogalactan, a schematic structural formula which was presented in Figure 2. The molar ratio of arabinose and galactose was 1:4.5. The main chain of arabinogalactan was composed of 1,3 linked ${\beta}$-D-galactopyranose residues, each of which carried a side chain, attached to the C-6 positions. The exact nature of all of the side chains is not known, but the majority of these side chain was composed of 1, 6 linked ${\beta}$-D-galactopyranose residues, with 2~3 such units present per average chain. Some of the galactose units in the main chain had a residue of 3 - 0 - ${\beta}$-L-arabinopyranosyl-L-arabinofuranose. In addition, a few terminal residues of D-glucuronic acid also was confirmed, attached to C-6 position of the D-galactopyranose residue. It could concluded that the main structure of highly branched arabinogalactan from Japanese larch extractive was essentially the same as those of the other larch species.
The effect of neonicochid type wood preservatives on adhesive properties of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin for laminated wood manufacture was examined. By the previous studies, it was verified that the neonicochid type preservative has a high termite-proofing and anti-mold effectiveness. Commercial ACQ (ammoniacal copper quaternary compounds) and CUAZ (copper azol compounds) were used as comparison preservatives of effects on adhesive properties. The wood specimens used japanese red pine (Pinus densifrora) after application with preservatives and then bonded with resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. Adhesive properties were evaluated by shearing strength of adhesive bond and wood failure to dry condition or after accelerated aging test. Of all laminated woods, the wood specimens spread with ACQ or CUAZ showed the lowest shearing strength of adhesive bond. We estimated that the decrease of shearing strength was caused by copper in the ACQ or CUAZ preservatives. On the application of the neonicochid type preservatives, the wood specimens showed the highest shearing strength even after accelerated aging test. From these results, it is concluded that the copper-free neonicochid type preservative not affected the curing of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin.

Alkaline peroxide bleaching of chemi-mechanical pulp is a very complicated system where various process factors affect the bleacing performance and pulp properties. Traditional onefactor-at a time method is ineffective and costly infinding the optimal bleaching conditions. In this study, statistical experimental design and multiple regression method wre used to investigated the interactions among various bleaching factors and to find out the possbile maximal brightness development during one stage alkaline peroxide bleacing of TMP. The TMP was made from 10% Korean red pine and 90% Korean spruce and had an initial brightness of 54.5% ISO. the TMP was pretreated with EDTA(0.5% on O.D. pulp, 3% pulp consistency, 30$^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes) and bleached in a 2 L Mark V Quantum Reactor at 750 rmp, 7.5% of bleaching consistency and with 0.05% magnesium sulfate addition. The ranges of chemical factors studied , based on oven-ried pulp, were 1-5% for hydrogen peroxide, 1-4% for sodium hydroxide and 1-4% for sodium silicate. The rages of reaction temperature and time were 50-90$^{\circ}C$ and 40-180minutes respectively. Interactions of hydrogen peroxide with alkali , time with temperature ature, alkali with time and silicate with temperature were found to be significant which means that hydrogen peroxide bleaching will be favored at stable concentration of perhydroxyl ion, relatively short time and low temperature, and high level of silicate. Mathematical model which has good predictability for target brightness in one stage peroxide bleaching can also be established easily. Base ion the model, maximal brightness of 70% ISO was found to at 50$^{\circ}C$ and 50 minutes by chemical additions of 5% for hydrogen peroxide, 3.2-3.4% for sodium hydroxide and 4% for silicate based on O.D. pulp. However, this result might not be suitable for situation where furnishes are different from ours, or different pretreatment is used, or bleaching carried out at different pulp consistency. In these cases it will be good to re-investigate the process by a similar methodology as was used in this study.

The purpose of this study is to interpret the landscape of Soyojeong, Taegeojeong, Chungeuijeong and Chwihanjeong in the Ongnyucheon region of the Changdeokgung Palace by analyzing the landscape elements using the pavilion's hanging couplets. Next, the landscape elements would be classified and interpreted by the Tang dynasty poet named Wang Changnyeong(王昌齡, 698-757) who put forward the range of aesthetics. According to the three kinds of classified boundaries, the results were as follows. First, the characteristics of the 'Wujing(物境)' described at spring dawn or in the moonlit night when the rain stopped, dew condensed, blooming flowers were in the quiet garden, fishes were drawn from the pond, and golden ogres sung in a dense pine forest. Second, the characteristics of 'Qingjing(情境)' described the emperor who held a grand ceremony: he sat in the jade throne, red curtains and gorgeous fans are propped up etc. All of these were used to praise the reign of a stable and peaceful nation. Third, the characteristics of 'Yijing(意境)' mainly described the Ongnyucheon region's scenery as an immortal world where people can experience and reach a high spiritual realm such as the 'integrated as one(物我一體)'.
In this study, it was examined the characteristics of bending property of red pine(Pinus densiflora S, et Z.) related to slope of grain. At first, we have investigated the characteristics of wood species for bending property. At second, it was examined the relationships between grain angle and its related bending property. Specimens were made following to grain angle $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, respectively. Dimension of wood materials was $10mm(T){\times}20mm(R){\times}350mm(L)$. Microwave irradiation time for bending process was 30, 60, 90, 120 seconds. The result of this study were as follows ; 1. Grain angle of wood was closely related to Young's modulus on bending process. In the process of bending with various grain angle, wood bending was easily proceed on the high grain angle range. 2. However, the strength of bent wood was very weak when the grain angle was high. Therefore, it was considered suitable grain angle for bending was existed. 3. The characteristics of wood properties for wood bending were very different among wood species.
Following our previous reports for finger-jointed woods with various finger profiles studied for the efficient use of small diameter logs and woods containing various defects, twelve types of finger-jointed woods glued with three kinds of adhesives and with two sizes of finger pitches were made with sitka spruce and red pine. The effects of the adhesives and finger pitches on bending creep performances of finger-jointed woods were investigated. The shape of creep curves differed among the used adhesives and finger pitches of finger-jointed woods for both tested species. Their creep curves showed a linear behavior beyond about one hour, and the N values fitted to power law increased with increasing finger pitches. The initial deformation increased with increasing finger pitches, regardless of the tested species and kinds of adhesives, whereas the effect of finger pitches on the creep deformation was not clear. For finger-jointed woods glued with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) resin, creep failure occurred in 106 hours after the load was applied. And the difference of the creep compliance between finger-jointed woods glued with resorcinol-phenol formaldehyde (RPF) resin and aqueous vinyl urethane (AVU) resin was small. The ratios for creep performances of finger-jointed woods glued with RPF resin and AVU resin versus solid wood were higher in creep deformation than initial deformation for both species, and the difference between both adhesives was not found. The relative creep decreased with increasing finger pitches, and the marked differences was not found between RPF resin and AVU resin.

This study investigates fire-retardant performances and combustion/thermal characteristics of fire-retardant treated wood by comparing them with those of fire-retardant untreated wood from the expreimental resutls of cone calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric(TG) analyzer. Hazardousness of combustion product gases for fire-retardant treated wood and untreasted wood were also observed from the results of internal finish material incombustibility test according to the Korea standard code of KS F 2271. In this study, we also tried to improve the fire retardant performance of wood by applying fire-retardant chemical composites, and to secure the fire safety performance in buildings. Red pine (Pinus densiflora) was selected as a test specimen because it is mostly used as a building material in Korea. Fire retardant chemical composites (FRCs) were prepared by mixing boron, phosphorous, and nitrogen species and treated by press-impregnation method. Water-based FRCs were composed of 3% boric acid($H_3BO_3$), 3% borax decahydrate($Na_2B_4O_7$), 8% ammonium carbonate($(NH_4)_2CO_3$), diammonium phosphate ($(NH_4)_2HPO_4$) varied from 10-30% and potassium carbonate($K_2CO_3$) varied from 10-30%. From the test results of cone calorimeter, TG analysis and gas hazard assessments, newly proposed were the optimal composition and production methods of FRCs which can sufficiently meet fire-retardant level 3 based on Korea law of construction. Thus, the FRCs, developed in this study, are anticipated to contribute to the improvement of fire safety and widespread of usage in wood as building materials.
This study was performed to investigate gruel intake, preference and opinions about gruel development to produce new products for breakfast. The subjects of this study were 307 adults in Chungju city. People who favored gruels were 212(69.5%) and 50.2% of the subjects liked the gruel because of good digestion and absorption. They liked midium thick or thin gruel and also liked grain granules with some stuff as contents. The gruels often taken were abalone gruel(45.9%), pumpkin gruel(41.7%), chicken gruel(34.9%), vegetable gruel(33.6%), beef and mushroom gruel(30.3%) etc. in order. The frequency of gruel intake was 1-2 times/year and 59.6% of subjects got gruels from the special gruel restaurant. People who need gruels most were patients, indigestible person, the elderly, weaning babies, workers and students missing breakfast in order. Sesame taste obtained the highest score of all, that of bitter taste was significantly higher in over fifty year old people (p<0.05), and hot taste score was significantly higher in 30-40 year old people (p<0.01). The gruels preferred most were abalone gruel, pumpkin gruel, chicken gruel, beef and mushroom gruel, vegetable gruel, red bean gruel, pine nut gruel, egg gruel, sesame gruel, plain grain gruel etc. in order. Fifty seven percent of subjects wanted to develope new gruels fortified nutrients. In conclusion, when the substitute gruel for breakfast is developed, it is better to use food materials to be easy to digest, to have grain granules with some stuff inside and to be sesame taste.
As a primary step to develop natural preservative for extending the shelf-life of kimchi, the effect of 102 edible plants, 21 antimicrobial agents and related compounds on kimchi fermentation was studied. Among 42 oriental medicinal plants tested, Baical skullcap and Assam indigo were found to be highly effective for maintaining the fresh state of kimchi. Although Bugbane, Red mangolia, Bushy sophora, Szechuan pepper, Chinese quince and Scisandre significantly inhibit the growth of Lactobacilli, their effect was not high enough to be used as raw materials for kimchi preservative. When the effect of 32 herbs and spices was tested, peppermint, cinnamon, lemon balm, clove, hop, rosemary, sage, horseradish and thyme showed high antimicrobial activity against kimchi microorganisms. Among them, the effect of clove ranked top. When it was added to fresh kimchi, initial cfu value ($2.4{\times}10^{6}cfu/g$) changed little even after 2 day's fermentation ($2.6{\times}10^{6}cfu/g$). Sensory test was not a good criteria to evaluate the effect of herbs and spices, since their highly specific flavors affected the taste of kimchies. Twenty eight fruits, vegetables and related plants were tested, but only leaves of pine tree, persimmon and oak leaves showed a significant bactericidal effect, finally contributing to the storage of kimchi. In addition, when 21 natural preservatives and other compounds were added individually to fresh kimchi, nisin and caffeic acid could inhibit fermentation.
