The application of simulated KOMPSAT-2 imagery to monitor graveyards is to be developed. Positions calculated from image were compared with those obtained from Geographic Positioning System. With 24 checkpoints, the position of graveyards showed within 5-meter range. Unsupervised classification, supervised classification, and objected-orientation classification algorithms were used to extract the graveyard. Unsupervised classification with masking processes based on National topographic data gives the best result. The graveyards were categorized with four types in field studies while the two types of graveyards were shown in descriptive statistics. Cluster Analysis and discriminant analysis showed the consistency with two types of tombs. It was hard to get a specific spectral signature of graveyards, as they are covered with grasses at different levels and shaded from the surrounding trees. The slopes and aspects of location of graveyards did not make any difference in the spectral signatures. This study gives the basic spectral characteristics for further development of objected-oriented classification algorithms and plausibility of KOMPSAT-2 images for management of mountainous areas in the aspect of position accuracy and classification accuracy.
Mapping systems using Satellite Imagery has not been well-established compare to conventional Arial Photograph mapping systems. In order for satellite imagery to produce a stable quality of maps, it requires to follow the standard mapping procedures. In this satellite imagery study, we proposed four methods of mapping procedures. Mapping methods were established by generating trial maps and analyzing types of input data and functions of DPW (Digital Photogrammetric Workstation). On quantitative aspect, accuracy of each steps were measured by increasing 2 GCPs each time from the minimum of 6 GCPs. In DLT, with the minimum of 10 points, RMSE is 2 pixels at most. Besides that, interpretation and stereoscopic plotting using KOMPSAT-1 imagery and other simulated imagery was performed. The tests resulted that, for KOMPSAT-1 (6.6m) stereoscopic images, the possibility of interpretation is 44.79% and possibility of stereoscopic plotting is 43.75%. In the other hand, for simulated imagery (1m), the possibility of interpretation is 60.92% and possibility of stereoscopic plotting is 55.18%.
With high resolution capability, satellite images are expanding their roles from earth resource monitorings to map production. Until now, maps are produced from airborne photos, but as large as at 1:2,400 scale, low cost satellite ortho images will replace the airborne photos. However, there has been no standard for map productions with satellite images. In this paper, we study the process of map productions with the satellite images of SPOT, IRS-lC, KOMPSAT, the positional accuracy of map features extracted from the satellite images, and the relationship between the image resolution and the map scale.
Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-5 (KOMPSAT-5) is the first satellite in Korea that provides 1 m resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Precise orbit determination (POD) using a dual-frequency IGOR receiver data is performed to conduct high-resolution SAR images. We suggest orbit determination strategies based on a differential GPS technique. Double-differenced phase observations are sampled every 30 seconds. A dynamic model approach using an estimation of general empirical acceleration every 6 minutes through a batch least-squares estimator is applied. The orbit accuracy is validated using real data from GRACE and KOMPSAT-2 as well as simulated KOMPSAT-5 data. The POD results using GRACE satellite are adjusted through satellite laser ranging data and compared with publicly available reference orbit data. Operational orbit determination satisfies 5 m root sum square (RSS) in one sigma, and POD meets the orbit accuracy requirements of less than 20 cm and 0.003 cm/s RSS in position and velocity, respectively.
In this study, we performed cross calibration of KOMPSAT-3 AEISS imaging sensor with reference to normalized pixels in the Landsat 8 OLI scenes of homogenous ROI recorded by both sensors between January 2014 and December 2019 at the Libya 4 PICS. Cross calibration is using images from a stable and well-calibrated satellite sensor as references to harmonize measurements from other sensors and/or characterize other sensors. But cross calibration has two problems; RSR and temporal difference. The RSR of KOMPSAT-3 and Landsat 8 are similar at the blue and green bands. But the red and NIR bands have a large difference. So we calculate SBAF of each sensor. We compared the SBAF estimated from the TOA Radiance simulation with KOMPSAT-3 and Landsat 8, the results displayed a difference of about 2.07~2.92% and 0.96~1.21% in the VIS and NIR bands. Before SBAF, Reflectance and Radiance difference was 0.42~23.23%. Case of difference temporal, we simulated by 6S and Landsat 8 for alignment the same acquisition time. The SBAF-corrected cross calibration coefficients using KOMPSAT-3, 6S and simulated Landsat 8 compared to the initial cross calibration without correction demonstrated a percentage difference in the spectral bands of about 0.866~1.192%. KOMPSAT-3 maximum uncertainty was estimated at 3.26~3.89%; errors due to atmospheric condition minimized to less than 1% (via 6S); Maximum deviation of KOMPSAT-3 DN was less than 1%. As the result, the results affirm that SBAF and 6s simulation enhanced cross-calibration accuracy.
The satellite visible data have been successfully applied to study the ocean color. Another ocean color sensor, the Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) on the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) will be launched in 1999. In order to understand the characteristics of future OSMI images, we have first discussed the simulation models and procedures in detail, and produced typical patterns of radiances at visible bands by using radiative transfer models. The various simulated images of full satellite passes and Korean local areas for different seasons, water types, and the satellite crossing equator time (CET) are presented to illustrate the distribution of each component of radiance (i.e., aerosol scattering, Rayleigh scattering, sun glitter, water-leaving radiance, and total radiance). A method to evaluate the image quality and availability is then developed by using the characteristics of image defined as the Complex Signal Noise Ratio (CSNR). Meanwhile, a series of CSNR images are generated from the simulated radiance components for different cases, which can be used to evaluate the quality and availability of OSMI images before the KOMPSAT will be placed in orbit. Finally, the quality and availability of OSMI images are quantitatively analyzed by the simulated CSNR image. It is hoped that the results would be useful to all scientists who are in charge of OSMI mission and to those who plan to use the data from OSMI.
In this study, we the estimated surface normalized difference vegetation index by using the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-3 (KOMPSAT-3) multi-spectral images for comparative analysis. The estimated NDVI from KOMPSAT-3 is used as for comparison with the high resolution GeoEye products. The geometry conditions for atmospheric effects are selected from meta files of KOMPSAT-3 bundle data. The used geometry conditions are consist of solar zenith angle, solar azimuth angle, viewing zenith angle, viewing azimuth angle, and date. And, Atmospheric effects such as attenuation, scattering and absorption were physically simulated from water vapor, ozone and aerosol information. Generally, although ground measurements are important for accurate information, in this study, MODIS atmospheric products are used as atmospheric constituents. The surface reflectance from radiative transfer model is utilized for estimating vegetation index. The present study, to reduce atmospheric and geometry conditions between KOMPSAT-3 and GeoEye having difference observation characteristics, data acquisition time is carefully determined for reliable vegetation spectral characteristics.
This study presents a method to restore an optical satellite image with distortion and occlusion due to fog, haze, and clouds to one that minimizes degradation factors by referring to the same type of peripheral image. Specifically, the time and cost of re-photographing were reduced by partially occluding a region. To maintain the original image's pixel value as much as possible and to maintain restored and unrestored area continuity, a simulation restoration technique modified with the Cycle Generative Adversarial Network (CycleGAN) method was developed. The accuracy of the simulated image was analyzed by comparing CycleGAN and histogram matching, as well as the pixel value distribution, with the original image. The results show that for Site 1 (out of three sites), the root mean square error and R2 of CycleGAN were 169.36 and 0.9917, respectively, showing lower errors than those for histogram matching (170.43 and 0.9896, respectively). Further, comparison of the mean and standard deviation values of images simulated by CycleGAN and histogram matching with the ground truth pixel values confirmed the CycleGAN methodology as being closer to the ground truth value. Even for the histogram distribution of the simulated images, CycleGAN was closer to the ground truth than histogram matching.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of spatial resolutions on digital image for detecting pine trees damaged by pine wilt disease. Color infrared images taken from PKNU-3 multispectral airborne photographing system with a spatial resolution of 50cm was used as a basic data. Further test images with spatial resolutions of 1m, 2m and 4m were made from the basic data to test the detecting capacity on each spatial resolution. The test was performed with visual interpretation both on mono and stereo modus and compared with field surveying data. It can be conclude that it needs less than 1m spational resolutions or 1m spatial resolutions with stereo pair in order to detect pine trees damaged by pine wilt disease.
As part of the next-generation Compact Advanced Satellite 500 (CAS500) project, CAS500-4 is scheduled to be launched in 2025 focusing on the remote sensing of agriculture and forestry. To obtain quantitative information on vegetation from satellite images, it is necessary to acquire surface reflectance through atmospheric correction. Thus, it is essential to develop an atmospheric correction method suitable for CAS500-4. Since the absorption and scattering characteristics in the atmosphere vary depending on the wavelength, it is needed to analyze the sensitivity of atmospheric correction parameters such as aerosol optical depth (AOD) and water vapor (WV) considering the wavelengths of CAS500-4. In addition, as CAS500-4 has only five channels (blue, green, red, red edge, and near-infrared), making it difficult to directly calculate key parameters for atmospheric correction, external parameter data should be used. Therefore, thisstudy performed a sensitivity analysis of the key parameters (AOD, WV, and O3) using the simulated images based on Sentinel-2 satellite data, which has similar wavelength specifications to CAS500-4, and examined the possibility of using the products of GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK2A) as atmospheric parameters. The sensitivity analysisshowed that AOD wasthe most important parameter with greater sensitivity in visible channels than in the near-infrared region. In particular, since AOD change of 20% causes about a 100% error rate in the blue channel surface reflectance in forests, a highly reliable AOD is needed to obtain accurate surface reflectance. The atmospherically corrected surface reflectance based on the GK2A AOD and WV was compared with the Sentinel-2 L2A reflectance data through the separability index of the known land cover pixels. The result showed that two corrected surface reflectance had similar Seperability index (SI) values, the atmospheric corrected surface reflectance based on the GK2A AOD showed higher SI than the Sentinel-2 L2A reflectance data in short-wavelength channels. Thus, it is judged that the parameters provided by GK2A can be fully utilized for atmospheric correction of the CAS500-4. The research findings will provide a basis for atmospheric correction of the CAS500-4 in the future.
