  • Recently Korean government announced the vision for low-carbon green growth. Quantifying of the carbon storage, distribution, and change of urban trees is vital to understanding the role of vegetation in the urban environment. In the city planning the carbon storage estimation has become an important factor. In this paper, KOMPSAT-2 satellite imagery was used to develop a method to predict the urban forest carbon storage from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) computed from a time sequence image data. The total carbon storage change by trees in the 6 administrative zonings of Jinju was estimated using the image data in 2007 and 2009. Therefore the paper presents a method based on the satellite images, which can estimate the spread of urban tree and carbon storage variation using KOMPSAT-2.

  • DEMs(digital elevation models) are generally used to automatically map the channel network and to delineate subbasins. At present, most DEM data are derived from three alternative sources which are ground survey, pphotogrammetric data capture and digitized cartographic data sources. The accuracy of a DEM is dependent on the spatial resolution, quality of the source data, collection and processing procedures, and digitizing systems. weather conditions and nature environment.etc provide us satellite image of the highest quality. However, Match in error of the auto generation DEM was severely affected by physical and environmental conditions at shooting time. This paper shows that real-time operation analysis of applied hydrology after extracting DEM Using a pair of Kompsat images.

  • GF (Guided Filtering) is a representative image processing technique to effectively remove noise while preserving edge information in the digital image. In this paper, we proposed a unsupervised change detection method for the KOMPSAT-3 satellite image using the GF and evaluated its performance. In order to utilize GF for the unsupervised change detection, cross-sharpened images were generated based on GF, and CVA (Change Vector Analysis) was applied to the generated cross-sharpened images to extract the changed area in the multitemporal satellite imagery. Experimental results using KOMPSAT-3 satellite images showed that the proposed method can be effectively used to detect changed regions compared with CVA results based on existing cross-sharpened images.

  • Earth observation satellites are being used in various field and are being developed in many countries due to their high utility and marketability. Korea is developing various Earth observation satellites according to National Space Development Plan. Among them, the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite(KOMPSAT) series is the most representative low-orbit satellite. So far, a total of five KOMPSAT have been launched to meet the national image demand and have been used in various fields, including national institutions. This special issue introduces research related to data processing, analysis, and utilization using various image data from the KOMPSAT series. Meanwhile, for the uninterrupted utilization of the subsequent KOMPSAT image data, data processing and utilization research suitable for high-resolution images must be continued, and related research contents will be continuously shared through a special issue.

  • This study investigated the method for obtaining 3-dimensional terrain information on inaccessable areas by evaluating geometric accuracy of the EOC pass image and scene image acquired from the KOMPSAT-1 satellite. For this purpose, the following four experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the KOMPSAT-1 EOC satellite data. 1) Calculation of ground coordinates by using ancillary data and image coordinates on Level 1R that were processed by the pre-processing system of KOMPSAT-1. 2) Calculation of 3-dimensional ground coordinates from the ground coordinates of stereo images calculated by using ancillary data, based on space intersections. 3) Execution of bundle adjustment by using GCP (Ground Control Point) extracted in a part of the stereo pass image (KOMPSAT-1 EOC, 1 scene size); and then, evaluation of the ground coordinates from the calculated exterior orientation. 4) Evaluation of accuracy by applying the exterior orientation calculated from 3) To the whole pass image.

  • As the availability of high-resolution satellite imagery increases, improvement of positioning accuracy of satellite images is required. The importance of orthorectified images is also increasing, which removes relief displacement and establishes true localization of man-made structures. In this paper, we performed automated extraction of building rooftops and total building areas within original satellite images using the existing building height database. We relocated the rooftop sin their true position and generated an orthorectified building layer. The extracted total building areas were used to blank out building areas and generate true orthographic non-building layer. A final orthorectified image was provided by overlapping the building layer and non-building layer. We tested the proposed method with KOMPSAT-3 and KOMPSAT-3A satellite images and verified the results by overlapping with a digital topographical map. Test results showed that orthorectified building layers were generated with a position error of 0.4m.Through the proposed method, the feasibility of automated true orthoimage generation within dense urban areas was confirmed.

  • The LEOP Cal/Val (Launch and Early Operation Phase Calibration/Validation) was carried out during 6 months after KOMPSAT-3A (KOMPSAT-3A Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A) was launched in March 2015. After LEOP Cal/Val was successfully completed, high resolution KOMPSAT-3A has been successfully distributing to users over the past 8 years. The sub-meter high-resolution satellite image data obtained from KOMPSAT-3A is used as basic data for qualitative and quantitative information extraction in various fields such as mapping, GIS (Geographic Information System), and national land management, etc. The KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) periodically checks and manages the quality of KOMPSAT-3A's product and the characteristics of satellite hardware to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information extracted from satellite data of KOMPSAT-3A. To minimize the deterioration of image quality due to aging of satellite hardware, payload and attitude sensors of KOMPSAT-3A, continuous improvement of image quality has been carried out. In this paper, the Cal/Val work-flow defined in the KOMPSAT-3A development phase was illustrated for the period of before and after the launch. The MTF, SNR, and location accuracy are the key parameters to estimate image quality and the methods of the measurements of each parameter are also described in this work. On the basis of defined quality parameters, the performance was evaluated and measured during the period of after LEOP Cal/Val. The current status and characteristics of MTF, SNR, and location accuracy of KOMPSAT-3A from 2016 to May 2020 were described as well.
