  • This work intends to investigate the effects of shift characteristics on the propulsion performance of a manual wheelchair with an automatic transmission. A planetary gear train is employed to generate a two-stage shift automatically, based on the distance traveled from rest. Motion analysis has been performed for measuring kinematic properties of the arm and then the inverse dynamics has been applied for estimating joint forces/torques. Then, a parametric study has been performed to find a set of the shift ratios and the shift intervals for optimizing propulsion performance. Results show that the propulsion performance is closely related to the shift condition. It is found that a short shift interval is desirable for a short distance propulsion. However, an optimum shift interval for a long distance propulsion is inversely proportional to the shift ratio approximately. Consequently, the automatic transmission can greatly lower the joint loadings by the speed reduction, which eventually contribute to prevent joint injuries of wheelchair users.

  • This study was to investigate the kinematical analysis using ski simulator. Twelve people(six skilled, six unskilled) participated in the experiment. Each phase of motion time was slight differences between the skilled group and the unskilled group but not significant difference in statistics. In displacement of vertical on COG(Center of Gravity), left and right down motion showed significant difference between group. In velocity of horizontal on COG, both left and right down motion showed significant difference between group, and up motion of between down motion showed significant difference. In displacement of angle on ankle, knee, hip joint almost showed significant difference between group. Almost in body position was lower skilled group than unskilled group.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the net joint moment and joint power of the lower extremity during squat in female patients with genu varum. Method: Eight female patients with genu varum were asked to do regular squats, and their net joint moment and joint power were compared to those of another eight female participants with straight legs. Their video recordings and ground reaction force data were analyzed to be used as a theoretical evidence of squatting effectively for female patients with genu varum. Results: Squats had a higher impact on internal knee joint rotation and ankle joint flexion moments in the genu varum group than in the straight leg group due to their weak and short hip joint muscles. Conclusion: There is a need to develop a squat movement that is appropriate for women with genu varum in order to distribute overload efficiently among the hip, knee, and ankle joints and to strengthen the muscles in a balanced way.

  • Objective: Flat-footed people struggle with excessive ankle joint motion during walking and running. This study aimed to investigate the effects of customized three-dimensional 3D-printed insoles on the kinematics of flat-footed people during daily activities (walking and running). Method: Fifteen subjects (height, $169.20{\pm}2.61cm$; age, $22.87{\pm}8.48years$; navicular bone height, $13.2{\pm}1.00mm$) diagnosed with flat feet in a physical examination participated in this study. Results: The customized 3D-printed insoles did not significantly affect 3D ankle joint angles under walking and running conditions. However, they shifted the trajectory of the center of pressure (COP) laterally during fast walking, which enhanced the load distribution on the foot during the stance phase. Conclusion: The customized 3D-printed insoles somewhat positively affected the pressure distribution of flat-footed people by changing the COP trajectory. Further research including comparisons with customized commercial insoles is needed.

  • Objective: Identification of meaningful patterns and trends in large volumes of unstructured data is an important task in various research areas. In the present study, we gathered golf swing image data and did quantitative analysis of swing image. Method: We collected golf swing images of 30 novice players and 30 professional players in this study. Results: We selected important features of swing posture and employed data mining algorithm to classify whether a player is an expert or a novice. Moreover, our proposed method could offer quantitative advices for golf beginners for correcting their swing. Conclusion: Finally, we found a possibility that our proposed method can be expanded to golf swing correction system

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of dynamic postural balance control against tilting platform between golfers and non-golfers. Method: 24 golfers and 26 non-golfers were participated. Eight motion capture cameras, two force plates, and one dynamic balance control platform were used for sensory perception test. It was performed two-way repeated ANOVA with a Bonferroni adjustment at a significant level of a 0.05. Results: Golfers' perception ability was higher than non-golfer according to slope. the CoP, time, angle variables were indicated main effect and interaction effect between golfer and non-golfer. Conclusion: It was known that golfer's proprioception perception ability was higher than non-golfers. Repeated practice such as shots and putting on the uneven ground might improve their balance control.

  • Objective: The goal of this study is to calculate and compare the Maximum Lyapunov Exponent (MLE) for the anteroposterior, mediolateral and vertical displacement of the markers attached to bony land marks of the trunk and foot. Method: Ten young and healthy male subjects (age: 26.5±3.27 years, height: 167.44±5.12 cm, and weight 69.5±7.36) participated in the study. Three-dimensional positional coordinate of eight different trunk and foot marker during walking on tread mill were analysed. Results: MLE values for anteroposterior displacement of the marker were found to be significantly different with MLE values for mediolateral and vertical displacement whereas MLE values for mediolateral displacement of the marker shows no significant difference with the MLE values for vertical displacement of the markers at significance level 0.05. Conclusion: Finding of this study suggest that it is essential to consider the displacement in all three direction to examine the real characteristic of a gait signal.

  • Objective: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate potential effects of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) on motor functions in postmenopausal women. Method: In this meta-analysis, 19 studies that examined changes in motor functions between postmenopausal women with and without HRT intervention were qualified. We additionally conducted moderator variable analyses including: (1) motor function type, (2) hormone type, and (3) duration of HRT intervention. Results: The random effects model showed no significant overall effects (SMD = 0.199; SE = 0.115; 95% CI = -0.026~0.425; Z = 1.730; p = 0.084; I2 = 93.258%). Additional three moderator variable analyses revealed no significant effect sizes indicating that specific HRT protocols did not improve different motor functions in postmenopausal women. Conclusion: These meta-analytic findings suggest that HRT had no positive effects on motor functions in postmenopausal women.

  • The batting performance in baseball is a repetitive movement. In order to make the stabilization of posture and the efficient shift of body weight, both the range of stance and stride are important. The previous studies explained that the consistent stride which included the amount of time, stance, and direction were needed. However, the batting performance is frequently changed according to the several speed of ball. Therefore, this study was to analyze the reaction time, the range of stance, the change of stride, and the change of GRF during the batting movement in three kinds of ball speed (120km/h, 130km/h, & 140km/h). Seven elite players are participated in this study. 1. The reaction time of the stride phase was short whereas the time of the swing phase was long according to the increasing ball speed. 2. The range of the stance was wide and the mediolateral direction of the stride was decreased according to the increasing ball speed. 3. In the three kinds of ball speed, the change of body weight was transferred to the center, the rear foot, and the front foot directions. The ball speed of 130km/h showed the high frequency of the suitable batting. At this ball speed, the movement of the body weight was shifted smoothly and the value of the Ground Reaction Force was large enough.
