  • This study was conducted to identify the appropriate nitrogen fertilizer application rate for improving rice quality in tidal reclaimed area, at the Gyehwado substation of the Honam Agricultural Research Institute during 2002-2(103. The experimental fields contained 0.1% (low salinity) and 0.3-0.4% (medium salinity) Nacl in soil solution. Plant height at panicle formation stage was tall ay heavy nitrogen level and the effect of heavy nitrogen was higher in low than in high soil salinity condition. Heading date was not affected by applied nitrogen levels from 8 to 16 kg/10a in low soil salinity condition but it was one day later in 24 kg/10a nitrogen level when compared with the standard nitrogen level,20 kg/10a. In middle soil salinity condition, the heading date was one day earlier in 8 to 16 kg/10a and similar in 24 kg/10a, when compared with 20 kg/10a nitrogen level. And also it was four days later in middle than in low soil salinity condition. In low soil salinity condition, grain number $\textrm{m}^2$ increased but ripened grain ratio decreased as the nitrogen application increased and finally, milled rice yield was not different among heavy nitrogen application levels compared with 12 kg/10a. Head rice ratio was high and protein content was low in 12 kg/10a or lower nitrogen level. In middle soil salinity condition, grain number $\textrm{m}^2$ increased and ripened grain ratio was not affected as the nitrogen application increased. And finally, milled rice yield increased with increasing nitrogen application levels, Head rice ratio was high and protein content was not affected by nitrogen application levels. Therefore, on the basis of milled rice yield and rice grain quality inreclaimed land, the appropriate nitrogen application level would be 12 kg/10a in low soil salinity condition and 20 kg/10a in middle soil salinity condition.

  • We investigated the effect of ginseng total saponin (GTS) on the regeneration process of experimentally crush injured rat sciatic nerves. The bilateral sciatic nerves of fifty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were compressed surgically with a straight hemostat for 30 seconds with 1 mm width. Twenty rats were divided into four groups to test the dose-dependent effect of GTS (0, 50, 100, or 150 mg/kg, i.p.). Saline for vehicle control group or GTS dissolved in saline was administerd for three weeks. After that period of time, the numbers of total myelinated axon and degenerated myelin in the sciatic nerves of bilateral legs were examined and analyzed using image analysis system to confirm a morphological effect of GTS. We found that the most effective concentration of GTS for the regeneration of damaged sciatic nerve was 150 mg/kg. In another set of experiment, thirty rats were divided into two groups as saline-treated vehicle group and GTS-treated group (150 mg/kg, i.p.) for three weeks. Every week we examined the numbers of total myelinated axon and degenerated myelin in the sciatic nerves of bilateral legs using image analysis system to evaluate the effect of GTS on injured nerves. We found that the regeneration of damaged sciatic nerves was facilitated in GTS-treated group compared to saline-treated group until two weeks. However, after that period of time we could not observe the significant difference between saline-treated group and GTS-treated group. These results suggest that GTS is a useful adjuvant therapy for the regeneration of the peripheral nerve injury in short period of treatment.

  • BACKGROUND: Pesticide residue analysis is essentially required for safety evaluation of agricultural products. Bistrifluron and chlorantraniliprole have been currently considered as potentials to deeply evaluate their residues in agricultural products because they are frequently found in strawberry. This work was performed to investigate the residual patterns of bistrifluron and chlorantraniliprole in strawberry after harvest. METHODS AND RESULTS: Strawberry was treated with bistrifluron and chlorantraniliprole 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days before harvest under greenhouse conditions. The strawberry samples were subjected to solvent and solid phase extractions followed by LC-MS/MS analysis. There covery percentages of bistrifluron and chlorantraniliprole for tified in the control samples ranged from approximately 82 to 103% with the method limit of 0.005 mg/kg. The concentrations of bistrifluron and chlorantraniliprole in strawberry samples decreased significantly in 10 days after treatment, giving the safety levels of 0.04 to 0.06 mg/kg at 10 days after application, as considered maximum residue limit. The half-lives of bistrifluron and chlorantraniliprole based on first order kinetics were determined to 6.3 days and 6.4 days, respectively. CONCLUSION: Bistrifluron and chlorantraniliprole are suggested to use in strawberry 10 days before harvest to reach residual safety levels.

  • The residual patterns of azoxystrobin and cyenopyrafen were investigated to compare the differences between rainshield and plastic house conditions of the grapes. Initial residue concentrations of azoxystrobin were $0.54\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ under rainshield condition and $0.9\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ under plastic house condition. And cyenopyrafen was 0.55 and $0.64\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ respectively. Biological half-life of azoxystrobin was calculated as 13.28 days under rainshield and 15.58 days under plastic house condition. And cyneopyrafen was 7.99 and 12.65 days, respectively. In comparison with two different cultivation conditions, pesticides in/on the grape were decomposed more faster under plastic house than rain shield conditions.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of free choice feeding of starter feed and whole cereals on the growth of turkey poults. Two hundred-seventy poults (7-d old) were divided into 3 treatment groups each with 3 replications containing 15 males and 15 females. Control poults (C) were fed only on starter feed (280 g CP and 11.7 MJ ME/kg). Treatments for choice-fed turkey poults were offered a choice of a starter feed and wheat (120 g CP and 12.3 MJ ME/kg) for wheat selecting (WS) or maize (83 g CP and 13.9 MJ ME/kg) for maize selecting (MS) group in separate feeders. Final live weight (2,280.7 g for the C vs. 2,374.3 and 2,324.6 g for the WS and MS), daily gain (39.21 g vs. 40.87 and 39.99 g) and total feed intake (95.2 g vs. 103.2 and 97.9 g) in the WS poults were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of the C group, but feed conversion ratio was not significantly different between the treatments. The proportional intakes of cereals vs. total feed intake were 11% in both the WS and MS group. The amount of protein intake in the C group (280 g CP/kg diet) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in WS and MS groups (263 and 259 g CP/kg diet, respectively) whilst the ME intake in the C group (11.7 MJ/kg diet) was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that in MS group (11.9 MJ/kg diet). Our results showed that turkey poults fed starter feed and whole wheat in a free choice feeding system have a higher efficiency in terms of daily gain, final live weight, and an economic advantage may be obtained from free choice feeding due to a reduced protein intake and feed cost.

  • Background: By-products of pickled radish (BPR) are considered food waste. Approximately 300 g/kg of the total mass of raw materials becomes BPR. Production of pickled radish has grown continuously and is presently about 40,000 metric tons annually in Korea. The objective of the present study was thus to explore the possibility of using BPR as a ruminant feed ingredient. Results: BPR contained a large amount of moisture (more than 800 g/kg) and ash, and comprised mostly sodium (103 g/kg DM) and chloride (142 g/kg DM). On a dry matter basis, the crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) levels in BPR were 75 g/kg and 7 g/kg, respectively. The total digestible nutrient (TDN) level was 527 g/kg and the major portion of digestible nutrients was carbohydrate; 88 % organic matter (OM) was carbohydrate and 65 % of total carbohydrate was soluble or degradable fiber. The coefficient of variation (CV) of nutrient contents among production batches ranged from 4.65 to 33.83 %. The smallest CV was observed in OM, and the largest, in EE. The variation in CP content was relatively small (10.11 %). The storage stability test revealed that storage of BPR at $20^{\circ}C$ (room temperature) might not cause spoilage for 4 d, and possibly longer. If BPR is refrigerated, spoilage can be deferred for 21 d and longer. The in vitro ruminal fermentation study showed that substitution of annual ryegrass straw with BPR improved ruminal fermentation, as evidenced by an increase in VFA concentration, DM degradability, and total gas production. Conclusion: The major portion of nutrients in BPR is soluble or degradable fiber that can be easily fermented in the rumen without adverse effects, to provide energy to ruminant animals. Although its high sodium chloride content needs to be considered when formulating a ration, BPR can be successfully used as a feed ingredient in a ruminant diet, particularly if it is one component of a total mixed ration.

  • These studies were investigated about influence of SKP 450, a $K^{+}$ channel opener, on the pressor actions induced by norepinephrine, angiotensin II and carotid artery occlusion in rats. Before these studies, effect of SKP 450 itself on blood pressure was examinated. SKP 450 produced the depressor action in proportionaly to dose of 0.3, 1.0 and 3.0 $\mu$g/kg given intravenously and this depressor action was weakened by pretreatment of glibenclamide, a $K^{+}$ channel blocker. The pressor action induced by norepinephrine, an alpha-adrenergic agonist, was blocked 1 hr after administation of SKP 450 in a dose of 3.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v. and directly after in a dose of 6.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v.. The pressor action induced by angiotensin II was blocked immediatly after treatment of SKP 450 in a dose of 3.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v.. The pressor action caused by carotid artery occlusion was not affected by SKP 450 of 3.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v., whereas markedly blocked by SKP 450 of 6.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎦, i.v.. The potentiated-pressor actions of norepinephrine and angiotensin II by pretreatment of chlorisondamine, a autonomic ganglionic blocking agent, were also blocked by administration of SKP 450 in a dose of 6.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v.. The weakened-pressor action of carotid artery occlusion by pretreatment of chlorisondamine was more weakened by SKP 450 6.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v.. The results suggest that hyperpolarization formed through $K^{+}$ channel opening in cell membrane inhibits the pressor action induced norepinephrine ; angiotensin II ; and carotid artery occlusion.usion.

  • Rural Development Administration has recently developed mid-late maturing rice cultivars with high quality. This study was conducted to select suitable mid-late maturing rice cultivar in major cultivation areas of Gangwon Province among domestic breeding cultivars for 2 years from 2013 to 2014. The average air temperature during the experiment in 2013 and 2014 was higher $0.6{\sim}1.1^{\circ}C$ in Chuncheon, $1.0{\sim}1.3^{\circ}C$ in Gangreung, and $0.1{\sim}0.7^{\circ}C$ in Cheolwon than normal year. Precipitation in ripening period was higher 52.5 mm in 2013, but lower 176.4 mm in 2014 than normal year in Chuncheon, lower 103.1 mm in 2013 and higher 42.9 mm in 2014 in Gangreung, lower 225.9~322.7 mm in Cheolwon. Duration of sunshine in ripening period was higher 142 hours in Chuncheon, 108 hours in Gangreung, and 94 hours in Cheolwon than normal year in 2013, higher 20~21 hours in Chuncheon and Gangreung, and 82 hours in Cheolwon than normal year in 2014. Milled rice yield of 'Samgwangbyeo' and 'Daebobyeo' was 594 kg per 10a, and 578 kg for 'Jinsumibyeo' in Chuncheon in plain area. For Gangreung in east coastal area, the yield of 'Daebobyeo' was 555 kg per 10a, 'Hopumbyeo' was 554 kg, and 'Chilbobyeo' was 546 kg. For Cheolwon in mid-mountainous area, the yield was 504 kg per 10a for 'Daebobyeo' and 489 kg for 'Haiamibyeo'. But there was no difference in milled rice yield among cultivars tested in the study at each area. Head rice ratio of 'Haiamibyeo', 'Jinsumibyeo', and 'Mipumbyeo' in Chuncheon was 94.2~95.6% higher than the other cultivars. In Gangreung head rice ratio of 'Hopumbyeo', 'Haiamibyeo', and 'Samgwangbyeo' were 85.2~88.3% but there was no difference among cultivars except 'Gopumbyeo' and broken rice ratio of 'Haiamibyeo', 'Samgwangbyeo', and 'Mipumbyeo' were low as 7.5~8.5% and palatability of 'Mipumbyeo' was higher than the other cultivars. Head rice ratio of 'Daebobyeo' was the highest as 89.2% and there was no difference in broken and chalky rice ratio and palatability among cultivars in Cheolwon. Considering rice yield and quality in major cultivation areas of Gangwon Province, suitable mid-late maturing rice cultivars were 'Samgwangbyeo', 'Haiamibyeo', and 'Jinsumibyeo' in Chuncheon, 'Daebobyeo' and 'Chilbobyeo' in Gangreung, and 'Daebobyeo' and 'Haiamibyeo' in Cheolwon. The results obtained in the study imply that the selected cultivars with high yield and quality and suitability to Chuncheon, Gangreung, and Cheolwon, respectively could be recommended to rice cultivating farmers in the regions with high priority.

  • Soil temperatures and soil physical properties were investigated in order to better understand the effects of mulchings in the red pepper field. The red pepper was planted in the lysimeter installed at the Yesan sandy loam with 20% slope and 10cm slope length. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Average soil temperatures at 10cm and 20cm depth in vinyl mulching plots were $1.6^{\circ}C$ and $1.1^{\circ}C$ higher than those of control, respectively. However, the average soil temperatures in rice straw mulching plots were relatively lower than those of control during the growing season. 2. The greatest diurnal fluctuation of soil temperature was found at the vinyl mulching plots and it was decreased with increasing soil depth. 3. The calculated thermal diffusivities were 0.011, 0.009 and $0.007cm^2/sec$ for the vinyl mulching, control and straw mulching, respectively. 4. Soil losses were 103kg/10a for the vinyl mulching and 36kg/10a for the straw mulching which were nearly negligible as compared to the control. 5. Soil physical properties such as bulk density, hardness and water content were significantly improved by the vinyl and straw mulchings.

  • Residues of ampicillin and amoxicillin in the muscles of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus were investigated after oral doses of 20 mg/kg body weight/day of ampicillin and 40 mg/kg body weight/day of amoxicillin in a first examination and 40 mg/kg body weight/day of ampicillin and 80 mg/kg body weight/day of amoxicillin in a second examination for 5-6 days. The ranges of seawater temperatures in the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ examinations were $13.4-15.6^{\circ}C$ and $16.8-21.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Ampicillin and amoxicillin concentrations were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The average recovery rates of ampicillin and amoxicillin in fish samples ranged from 84.8-95.2% and 100.8-103.8%, respectively. Residual concentrations in the olive flounder peaked on the $5^{th}$ day, with average concentrations of 0.075 mg/kg and 0.311 mg/kg in the $1^{st}$ examination, and 0.098 mg/kg and 0.630 mg/kg in the $2^{nd}$ examination for ampicillin and amoxicillin, respectively, with maximum concentrations in muscle. In the $1^{st}$ examination, ampicillin concentrations in olive flounder after withdrawals of 1 and 3 days were 0.041 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively, and amoxicillin concentrations after withdrawals of 1 day and 10 days were 0.172 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively. In the $2^{nd}$ examination, the ampicillin concentrations in olive flounder after withdrawals of 1 and 3 days were 0.041 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively, and amoxicillin concentration after withdrawals of 1 day and 10 days were 0.172 mg/kg and 0.023 mg/kg, respectively. We suggest that the recommended withdrawal periods should be 3 days for ampicillin and 10 days for amoxicillin in the olive flounder.
