  • A total of 824 observations (206 in ${\Delta}B$, 206 in ${\Delta}V$, 206 in ${\Delta}R$, 206 in ${\Delta}I$ for CC Com were made on 3 nights from March 3 to April 3 in 2002 using the 61cm telescope with 2K CCD camera of the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory of KASI. From our observations 9 times of minimum light were newly determined. Combined analysis of our new BVRI light curves with the double-lined radial velocity curves of Pribulla et al. (2007) were made with the 2004 Wilson-Devinney(WD) binary model code to yield new physical parameters of the CC Com system. Small asymmetries in light curves were explained with the adoption of two hot spots on the cool secondary.

  • The Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) from GPS with high resolution in terms of time and space might reduce the limitations of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model for easily variable phenomena, such as precipitation and cloud. We have converted to PWV from Global Positioning System (GPS) data of Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF). First of all, we have selected the heavy rainfall case of having a predictability limitation in time and space due to small-scale motion. In order to evaluate the effect for GPS PWV, we have executed the sensitivity experiment with PWV from GPS data over Korean peninsula in the Weather Research & Forecasting 3-Dimensional Variational (WRF-3DVAR). We have also suggested the direction of further research for an improvement of the predictability of NWP model on the basis of this case.

  • We made a revised catalogue for reliable records of meteor outbursts that were recorded in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese chronicles. In order to avoid the effects of both Earth's precession and perihelion shift, we introduced a new time-coordinate of records, or the number of days elapsed within the sidereal year of the record for a given origin of time or the perihelion passage time of the you 2000. We added nineteen new records of meteor showers that are wrongly classified i, individual meteors in a Chinese archive. We found that the ${\eta}-Aquarids,$ the Perseids, the Orionids, and the Leonids have been active during the last two millennia. Due to the change of time-coordinate, the oldest record of each long-lasting meteor shower has been slightly corrected. We discuss that these long-lasting meteor showers belong to the Halley-type comets.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) launched the development project of two satellite laser ranging (SLR) systems in early 2008 after the government fund approval of the SLR systems in 2007. One mobile SLR system and one permanent SLR station will be developed with the completion of the project. The main objectives of these systems will be focused on the Space Geodetic researches. A system requirement review was held in the second half of the same year. Through the following system design review meeting and other design reviews, many unsolved technical and engineering issues would be discussed and resolved. However, the design of the mobile SLR system is a corner stone of whole project. The noticeable characteristics of Korea's first SLR system are 1) use of light weight main mirror, 2) design of compact optical assembly, 3) use of KHz laser pulse, 4) use of commercial laser generator, 5) remote operation capability, 6) automatic tracking, 7) state of art operation system, etc. In this paper, the major user requirement and pre-defined specification are presented and discussed.

  • We produced the electron density distribution in the ionosphere over South Korea using the data from nine permanent GPS (Global Positioning System) stations which have been operated by KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute). The dual-frequency GPS receiver data was used to precisely estimate the electron density in the ionosphere and we obtained the precise electron density profile based on two-dimensional TEC (Total Electron Contents). We applied ART (Algebraic Reconstruction Technique), which is one of the most commonly used algorithms to develop the tomography model. This paper presented the electron density distribution over South Korea with time. We compared with the electron density profiles derived from the GPS tomography reconstruction, Ionosonde measurement data obtained by observations, and the IRI-2001 values. As a result, the electron density profile by GPS reconstruction was in excellent agreement with the electron density profile obtained by Ionosonde measurement data.

  • We observed $2.1218{\mu}m$ $H_2$ 1-0 S(1) emission from H II region A, which is located just next to Sgr A East and one of the nearest star forming regions to the Gatactic center. Cooled Grating Spectrometer 4 (CGS4) at the 3.8 m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) was used with aa echelle grating at a velocity resolution of ${\sim}$ 18km s^{-1}$ and an angular resolution of ${\sim}$ 2 arcsec. Comparing the distributions and kinematics of the observed $H_2$ emission with radio continuum and $NH_3$ emission, we find no evidence that this H II region is interacting with Sgr A East. This conclusion supports that the star formation in this region has not been stimulated by the blast wave of Sgr A East.

  • The GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signal is delayed by the neutral atmosphere at the troposphere, so that the delay is one of major error sources for GNSS precise positioning. The tropospheric delay is an integrated refractive index along the path of GNSS signal. The refractive index is empirically related to standard meteorological variables, such as pressure, temperature and water vapor partial pressure, therefore the tropospheric delay could be calculated from them. In this paper, it is presented how to generate meteorological data where observation cannot be performed. KASI(Korea Astronomy & Space Science Institute) has operated 9 GPS (Global Positioning System) permanent stations equipped with co-located MET3A, which is a meteorological sensor. Meteorological data are generated from observations of MET3A by Ordinary Kriging. To compensate a blank of observation data, simple models which consider periodic characteristics for meteorological data, are employed.

  • There have been many solar tracking systems developed for the high accuracy in solar tracking. One of the key components of any motion control system is software. LabVIEW offers an ideal combination of flexibility, ease-of-use and well-integration with other I/O pieces for developing solar tracking system. Real-time solar positions which vary with GPS's data are used simultaneously to control the solar tracker by a chain of operating modes between the open and closed loops. This paper introduces a step by step procedure for the fabrication and performance assessment of a precision solar tracking system. The system developed in this study consists of motion controllers, motor drives, step-motors, feedback devices and application. CRD sensors are applied for the solar tracking system which play a primary role in poor conditions for tracking due to a gear backlash and a strong wind. Mini-dish was used as a concentrator for collecting sun light. The solar position data, in terms of azimuth and elevation, sunrise and sunset times was compared with those of KASI(Korea Astronomy & Space Science Institute). The results presented in this paper demonstrate the accuracy of the present system in solar tracking and utilization.

  • The trend of water vapor contents in atmosphere is one of key elements for studying climate change. The tropospheric products, i.e., ZTD values achieved through GPS data processing can retrieve the amount of water vapor with higher temporal and spatial resolution than any other instruments. In this study, the tropospheric products of KASINET for a time period from 2001 to 2014 are reprocessed using PPP strategy and the products from the CODE's 2nd reprocessing campaign. For consistency with reprocessing activities of other networks like EPN, the VMF1 mapping function and non-tidal loading effect due to atmospheric pressure are applied in the process. The reprocessing results are investigated through comparing with the CODE's 2nd reprocessing products by including some IGS stations in the process and also calculating weekly coordinate repeatability to see the quality of the processing. After removing outliers based on the variation of averaged formal error, all processed stations have similar variations of formal error about 2 mm which is lower than that of the IGS final product. Comparison results with the CODE's 2nd reprocessing products show that the overall mean difference is found to be -0.28±5.54 mm which is similar level of the previous studies. Finally, the ZTD trends of all KASINET stations are calculated and the averaged trend is achieved as 0.19 mm/yr. However, the trend of each month shows different amounts and directions from -1.26 mm/yr in May to 1.18 mm/yr in August. In conclusion, the reprocessed tropospheric product and applied strategy of this study has enough quality as one of reliable solution for a reference product for Korean Peninsula which is needed to use GPSbased tropospheric product for climate change research.
