  • Electronic cigarettes are novel tobacco products that are frequently used these days. The cartridge contains liquid nicotine and accidental poisoning, even with a small oral dose, endangers children. We present here a mortality case of a 15-month-old child who ingested liquid nicotine mistaking it for cold medicine. When the emergency medical technicians arrived, she was found to have pulseless electrical activity. Spontaneous circulation was restored after approximately 40 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The cotinine level in her urine was 1,716 ng/mL. Despite intensive supportive care, severe anoxic brain injury was found on computed tomography and the child ultimately died. This fatality highlights the need for public health efforts to minimize such accidents.

  • We have designed an extractive distillation for separating maximum boiling azeotrope of acetone-chloroform system. PRO/II 9.4 was used to simulate the overall process. The VLE data adopted from Dortmund data bank was regressed to obtain a new set of binary interaction parameters. Three different entrainers were used for the separation process--dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and benzene--to test their viability for the acetone-chloroform system. Thermodynamic feasibility analysis was done through ternary map diagrams. Two different thermodynamic models, NRTL and UNIQUAC, were explored for the study of overall process.

  • Parallel genetic algorithms are particularly easy to implement and promise substantial gains in performance. Its basic idea is to keep several subpopulations that are processed by genetic algorithms. Furthermore, a migration mechanism produces a chromosome exchange between subpopulation. In this paper, a new selection method based on non-linear fitness assignment presented. The use of proposed ranking selection permits higher local exploitation search, where the diversity of populations is structure. Experimental results show that the relation between local-global search balance and the probabilities of reaching a desired solution.

  • Recently, the power and refrigeration cogeneration based on Kalina cycle has attracted much attention for more efficient utilization of low-grade energy. This study presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of a cogeneration cycle of power and absorption refrigeration based on Kalina cycle. The cycle combines Kalina cycle (KCS-11) and absorption cycles by adding a condenser and an evaporator between turbine and absorber. The effects of ammonia mass fraction and separation pressure were investigated on the system performance of the system. Results showed that the energy utilization of the system could be greatly improved compared to the basic Kalina cycle.

  • A fundamental limitation of steel structures is the decrease in their load-bearing capacity at high temperatures in fire situations such that structural members may require some additional treatment for fire resistance. In this regard, this paper evaluates the structural stability of fire-resistant steel, introduced in the late 1999s, through tensile coupon tests and proposes some experimental equations for the yield stress, the elastic modulus, and specific heat. The surface temperature, deflection, and maximum stress of fire-resistant steel H-section columns were calculated using their own mechanical and thermal properties. According to a comparison of mechanical properties between fire-resistant steel and Eurocode 3, the former outperformed the latter, and based on a comparison of structural performance between fire-resistant steel and ordinary structural steel of equivalent mechanical properties at room temperature, the former had greater structural stability than the latter through $900^{\circ}C$.
