Wi-Fi fingerprinting system is a very popular positioning method used in indoor spaces. The system depends on Wi-Fi Received Signal Strength (RSS) from Access Points (APs). However, the Wi-Fi RSS is changeable by multipath fading effect and interference due to walls, obstacles and people. Therefore, the Wi-Fi fingerprinting system produces low position accuracy. Also, Wi-Fi signals pass through walls. For this reason, the existing system cannot distinguish users' floor. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a LED fingerprinting system for accurate indoor positioning. The proposed system uses a received optical power from LEDs and LED-Identification (LED-ID) instead of the Wi-Fi RSS. In training phase, we record LED fingerprints in database at each place. In serving phase, we adopt a K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) algorithm for comparing existing data and new received data of users. We show that our technique performs in terms of CDF by computer simulation results. From simulation results, the proposed system shows that a positioning accuracy is improved by 8.6 % on average.

Recently, k-nearest neighbors query methods based on wireless broadcasting environment are actively studied. The advantage of wireless broadcasting environment is the scalability that enables collective query processing for unspecified users connected to the server. However, in case existing k-NN query is applied in wireless broadcasting environment, there can be a disadvantage that backtracking may occur and consequently the query processing time is increasing. In this paper proposes a hierarchical bitmap-based spatial index in order to efficiently process the k-NN queries in wireless broadcasting environment. HBI reduces the bitmap size using such bitmap information and tree structure. As a result, reducing the broadcast cycle can reduce the client's tuning time and query processing time. In addition, since the locations of all the objects can be detected using bitmap information, it is possible to tune to necessary data selectively. For this paper, a test was conducted implementing HBI to k-NN query and the proposed technique was proved to be excellent by a performance evaluation.

Traffic classification seeks to assign packet flows to an appropriate quality of service (QoS) class based on flow statistics without the need to examine packet payloads. Classification proceeds in two steps. Classification rules are first built by analyzing traffic traces, and then the classification rules are evaluated using test data. In this paper, we use self-organizing map and K-means clustering as unsupervised machine learning methods to identify the inherent classes in traffic traces. Three clusters were discovered, corresponding to transactional, bulk data transfer, and interactive applications. The K-nearest neighbor classifier was found to be highly accurate for the traffic data and significantly better compared to a minimum mean distance classifier.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the interaction effects between price determinants of artworks. We expand the methodology in art market by applying machine learning techniques to estimate the price of artworks and compare linear regression and machine learning in terms of prediction accuracy. Methods: Moderated regression analysis was performed to verify the interaction effects of artistic characteristics on price. The moderating effects were studied by confirming the significance level of the interaction terms of the derived regression equation. In order to derive price estimation model, we use multiple linear regression analysis, which is a parametric statistical technique, and k-nearest neighbor (kNN) regression, which is a nonparametric statistical technique in machine learning methods. Results: Mostly, the influences of the price determinants of art are different according to the auction types and the artist 's reputation. However, the auction type did not control the influence of the genre of the work on the price. As a result of the analysis, the kNN regression was superior to the linear regression analysis based on the prediction accuracy. Conclusion: It provides a theoretical basis for the complexity that exists between pricing determinant factors of artworks. In addition, the nonparametric models and machine learning techniques as well as existing parameter models are implemented to estimate the artworks' price.

For a integrated system to control several parking lots within a commercial district, it is required to guide a route to a nearest neighbor parking lot considering diverse realtime constraints such as realtime status of parking lots and changes of an access route. This paper proposes an optimized route-searching technique of integrated parking control system considering realtime contraints. In concrete, it proposes a method of researching a route in the surrounding area considering various status of parking lots that a customer designates (no parking, closed, under construction, no passing of a road) and deals with a route-searching technique optimized for each situation in detail.

Recently, advances in mobile devices and wireless communication technologies require research on various location-based services. As a result, many studies on processing k-nearest neighbor query, which is most im portant one in location-based services, have been done. Most of existing studies use pre-computation technique to improve retrieval performance by computing network distance between POIs and nodes beforehand in spatial networks. However, they have a drawback that they can not deal with effectively the update of POIs to be searched. In this paper, we propose a distributed grid scheme using S-GRID to overcome the disadvantage of the existing work as well as to manage the location information of a large number of moving objects in efficient way. In addition, we describe a k-nearest neighbor(k-NN) query processing algorithm for the proposed distributed grid scheme. Finally, we show the efficiency of our distributed grid scheme by making a performance comparison between the k-NN query processing algorithm of our scheme and that of S-GRID.

Data fusion is defined as the process of combining data and information from different sources for the effectiveness of the usage of useful information contents. In this paper, we propose a data fusion algorithm using k-means clustering method for data enrichment to improve data quality in knowledge discovery in database(KDD) process. An empirical study was conducted to compare the proposed data fusion technique with the existing techniques and shows that the newly proposed clustering data fusion technique has low MSE in continuous fusion variables.
Object recognition technologies using PCA(principal component analysis) recognize objects by deciding representative features of objects in the model image, extracting feature vectors from objects in a image and measuring the distance between them and object representation. Given frequent recognition problems associated with the use of point-to-point distance approach, this study adopted the k-nearest neighbor technique(class-to-class) in which a group of object models of the same class is used as recognition unit for the images in-putted on a continual input image. However, the robustness of recognition strategies using PCA depends on several factors, including illumination. When scene constancy is not secured due to varying illumination conditions, the learning performance the feature detector can be compromised, undermining the recognition quality. This paper proposes a new PCA recognition in which database of objects can be detected under different illuminations between input images and the model images.
Naive Bayes nearest neighbor (NBNN) is a simple image classifier based on identifying nearest neighbors. NBNN uses original image descriptors (e.g., SIFTs) without vector quantization for preserving the discriminative power of descriptors and has a powerful generalization characteristic. However, it has a distinct disadvantage. Its memory requirement can be prohibitively high while processing a large amount of data. To deal with this problem, we apply a spherical hashing binary code embedding technique, to compactly encode data without significantly losing classification accuracy. We also propose using an inverted index to identify nearest neighbors among binarized image descriptors. To demonstrate the benefits of our method, we apply our method to two existing NBNN techniques with an image dataset. By using 64 bit length, we are able to reduce memory 16 times with higher runtime performance and no significant loss of classification accuracy. This result is achieved by our compact encoding scheme for image descriptors without losing much information from original image descriptors.

Recently, due to the advanced technologies of mobile devices and wireless communication, there are many studies on telematics and LBS(location-based service) applications. because moving objects usually move on spatial networks, their locations are updated frequently, leading to the degradation of retrieval performance. To manage the frequent updates of moving objects' locations in an efficient way, a new distributed grid scheme, called DS-GRID (distributed S-GRID), and k-NN(k-nearest neighbor) query processing algorithm was proposed[1]. However, the result of k-NN query processing technique may be invalidated as the location of query and moving objects are changed. Therefore, it is necessary to study on continuous k-NN query processing algorithm. In this paper, we propose both MCE-CKNN and MBP(Monitoring in Border Point)-CKNN algorithmss are S-GRID. The MCE-CKNN algorithm splits a query route into sub-routes based on cell and seproves retrieval performance by processing query in parallel way by. In addition, the MBP-CKNN algorithm stores POIs from the border points of each grid cells and seproves retrieval performance by decreasing the number of accesses to the adjacent cells. Finally, it is shown from the performance analysis that our CKNN algorithms achieves 15-53% better retrieval performance than the Kolahdouzan's algorithm.
