Traffic classification seeks to assign packet flows to an appropriate quality of service (QoS) class based on flow statistics without the need to examine packet payloads. Classification proceeds in two steps. Classification rules are first built by analyzing traffic traces, and then the classification rules are evaluated using test data. In this paper, we use self-organizing map and K-means clustering as unsupervised machine learning methods to identify the inherent classes in traffic traces. Three clusters were discovered, corresponding to transactional, bulk data transfer, and interactive applications. The K-nearest neighbor classifier was found to be highly accurate for the traffic data and significantly better compared to a minimum mean distance classifier.

In this study, DAQ and TRA modules were applied to the CFRP single specimen testing method using AE. A method for crack identification in CFRP specimens based on k-mean clustering and wavelet transform analysis are presented. Mode I on DCB under vertical loading and mode II on 3-points ENF testing under share loading have been carried out, thereafter k-mean method for clustering AE data and wavelet transition method per amplitude have been applied to investigate characteristics of interfacial fracture in CFRP composite. It was found that the fracture mechanism of Carbon/Epoxy Composite to estimate of different type of fractures such as matrix(epoxy resin) cracking, delamination and fiber breakage same as AE amplitude distribution using a AE frequency analysis. In conclusion, the presented results provide a foundation for using wavelet analysis as efficient crack detection tool. The advantage of using wavelet analysis is that local features in a displacement response signal can be identified with a desired resolution, provided that the response signal to be analyzed picks up the perturbations caused by the presence of the crack.
Coal pillar assessment is of broad importance to underground engineering structure, as the pillar failure can lead to enormous disasters. Because of the highly non-linear correlation between the pillar failure and its influential attributes, conventional forecasting techniques cannot generate accurate outcomes. To approximate the complex behavior of coal pillar, this paper elucidates a new idea to forecast the underground coal pillar stability using combined unsupervised-supervised learning. In order to build a database of the study, a total of 90 patterns of pillar cases were collected from authentic engineering structures. A state-of-the art feature depletion method, t-distribution symmetric neighbor embedding (t-SNE) has been employed to reduce significance of actual data features. Consequently, an unsupervised machine learning technique K-mean clustering was followed to reassign the t-SNE dimensionality reduced data in order to compute the relative class of coal pillar cases. Following that, the reassign dataset was divided into two parts: 70 percent for training dataset and 30 percent for testing dataset, respectively. The accuracy of the predicted data was then examined using support vector classifier (SVC) model performance measures such as precision, recall, and f1-score. As a result, the proposed model can be employed for properly predicting the pillar failure class in a variety of underground rock engineering projects.
In this paper we introduce a new prototype based classifiers for overlapping data, where training pattern can be overlap on the feature space. The proposed classifier is based on the prototype from neural network classifier (NNC)[1] for overlap data. The method automatically chooses the initial center and two radiuses for each class. The center is used as a mean representative of training data for each class. The unclassified pattern is classified by measure distance from the class center. If the distance is in the lower (shorter radius) the unknown pattern has the high percentage of being in this class. If the distance is between the lower and upper (further radius), the pattern has the probability of being in this class or others. But if the distance is outside the upper, the pattern is not in this class. We borrow the words upper and lower from the rough set to represent the region of certainty [3]. The training algorithm to find number of cluster and their parameters (center, lower, upper) is presented. The clustering result is tested using patterns from Thai handwritten letter and the clustering result is very similar to human eyes clustering.

To investigate the influence of partial discharge(PD) distribution characteristics due to various defects on the power cable joints interface, we used the K-means clustering method. As the result of PD number(n) distribution analyzing on $\Phi-n$ graph, the phase angle($\Phi$) of cluster centroid shifted to $0^{\circ}\;and\;180^{\circ}$ increasing with applying voltage. It was confirmed that the PD quantify(q) and euclidean distance of centroid were increased with applying voltage from the centroid distribution analyzing of $\Phi-q$ plane. The dispersion degree was increased with calculated standard deviation of the $\Phi-q$ cluster centroid. The PD number and mean value on $\Phi-q$ graph were some different by electric field concentration with defect types.

Clustering is a technique which is used to measure similarities between data in big data analysis and data mining field. Among various clustering methods, k-Modes algorithm is representatively used for categorical data. To increase the performance of iterative-centric tasks such as k-Modes, a distributed and concurrent framework Spark has been received great attention recently because it overcomes the limitation of Hadoop. Spark provides an environment that can process large amount of data in main memory using the concept of abstract objects called RDD. Spark provides Mllib, a dedicated library for machine learning, but Mllib only includes k-means that can process only continuous data, so there is a limitation that categorical data processing is impossible. In this paper, we design RDD for k-Modes algorithm for categorical data clustering in spark environment and implement an algorithm that can operate effectively. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm increases linearly in the spark environment.
In this paper we proposed a fast method for a K-Means Clustering algorithm. The main characteristic of this method is that it uses precalculated data which possibility of change is high in order to speed up the algorithm. When calculating distance to cluster centre at each stage to assign nearest prototype in the clustering algorithm, it could reduce overall computation time by selecting only those data with possibility of change in cluster is high. Calculation time is reduced by using the distance information produced by K-Means algorithm when computing expected input data whose cluster may change, and by using such distance information the algorithm could be less affected by the number of dimensions. The proposed method was compared with original K-Means method - Lloyd's and the improved method KMHybrid. We show that our proposed method significantly outperforms in computation speed than Lloyd's and KMHybrid when using large size data which has large amount of data, great many dimensions and large number of clusters.
Recent technological advances in mobile communication systems have made explosive growth in the number of mobile device users worldwide. One of the most important issues in designing a mobile computing system is location management of users. The hierarchical systems had been proposed to solve the scalability problem in location management. The scalability problem occurs when there are too many users for a mobile system to handle, as the system is likely to react slow or even get down due to late updates of the location databases. In this paper, we propose a top-down clustering algorithm for hierarchical location database systems in a wireless network. A hierarchical location database system employs a tree structure. The proposed algorithm uses a top-down approach and utilizes the number of visits to each cell made by the users along with the movement information between a pair of adjacent cells. We then present a modified algorithm by incorporating the exhaustive method when there remain a few levels of the tree to be processed. We also propose a capacity constraint top-down clustering algorithm for more realistic environments where a database has a capacity limit. By the capacity of a database we mean the maximum number of mobile device users in the cells that can be handled by the database. This algorithm reduces a number of databases used for the system and improves the update performance. The experimental results show that the proposed, top-down, modified top-down, and capacity constraint top-down clustering algorithms reduce the update cost by 17.0%, 18.0%, 24.1%, the update time by about 43.0%, 39.0%, 42.3%, respectively. The capacity constraint algorithm reduces the average number of databases used for the system by 23.9% over other algorithms.
Clustering is a useful technique for grouping data points such that points within a single group/cluster have similar characteristics. Many clustering algorithms have been developed and used in engineering applications including pattern recognition and image processing etc. Recently, it has drawn increasing attention as one of important techniques in data mining. However, clustering algorithms such as K-means and Fuzzy C-means suffer from difficulties. Those are the needs to determine the number of clusters apriori and the clustering results depending on the initial set of clusters which fails to gain desirable results. In this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm, which solves mentioned problems. In our method we use evolutionary algorithm to solve the local optima problem that clustering converges to an undesirable state starting with an inappropriate set of clusters. We also adopt a new measure that represents how well data are clustered. The measure is determined in terms of both intra-cluster dispersion and inter-cluster separability. Using the measure, in our method the number of clusters is automatically determined as the result of optimization process. And also, we combine heuristic that is problem-specific knowledge with a evolutionary algorithm to speed evolutionary algorithm search. We have experimented our algorithm with several sets of multi-dimensional data and it has been shown that one algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms.

It is necessary to forecast the electricity demand for reliable and effective operation of the power system. In this study, we try to categorize a functional data, the mean curve in accordance with the time of daily power demand pattern. The data were collected between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2011. And it were converted to time series data consisting of seasonal components and error component through log transformation and removing trend. Functional clustering by Ma et al. (2006) are applied and parameters are estimated using EM algorithm and generalized cross validation. The number of clusters is determined by classifying holidays or weekdays. Monday, weekday (Tuesday to Friday), Saturday, Sunday or holiday and season are described the mean curve of daily power demand pattern.
