  • PURPOSE: This paper describes the effects of the myofascial release (MFR) approach in a 20-year-old female patient with neuroforaminal encroachment and regional kyphosis in the cervical area, who also had neck pain. METHODS: A 20-year-old female presented with the chief complaint of neck pain while studying with a level of seven on the rating analogue scale (RAS) and was not taking any drugs or undergoing treatment for the control of neck pain prior to visiting. The cervical radiograph demonstrated neuroforaminal encroachment from C4-5. The patient showed 3.5° kyphosis at C4-5 and 22.9° lordosis at C2-7 according to the Harrison posterior tangent method. The anterior head translation (AHT) was 13.9mm. She reported pain of RAS 5 at the scapular medial border while rotating her neck in the left direction and flexing forward. The patient was treated a total 16 times, three times/week for six weeks using the MFR approach. RESULTS: After the treatment sessions, studying without pain was possible for approximately two hours, but after approximately two hours of studying, she experienced pain of RAS 6 and a stiff feeling in front of the neck. Neuroforaminal encroachment was not detected in the radiographs taken after applying MFR. Improvement of C4-5 kyphosis was noted (from 3.5° kyphosis to 3.8° lordosis). AHT was decreased by 13.6 mm (from 13.9 mm to 0.3 mm). The pain with motion had disappeared. CONCLUSION: The MFR approach in this patient with neuroforaminal encroachment could reduce the pain related to motion and restore the regional cervical lordosis.

  • Hydraulic and hydrological flood routing methods are commonly used to analyze temporal and spatial flood influences of flood wave through a river reach. Hydrological flood routing method has relatively more simple and reasonable performance accuracy compared to the hydraulic method. Storage constant used in Muskingum method widely applied in hydrological flood routing is very similar to the travel time. Focusing on this point, in this study, we estimate the travel time from HEC-RAS results to estimate storage constant, and develop a non-linear regression equation for the travel time using reach length, channel slope, and discharge. The estimated flow by Muskingum model with storage constant of nonlinear equation is compared with the flow calculated by applying the HEC-RAS 1-D unsteady flow simulation. In addition, this study examines the effect on the weighting factor changes and interval reach divisions; peak discharge increases with the bigger weighting factor, and RMSE decreases with the fragmented division.

  • This study has analyzed the backwater effect by the bridge pier on the basis of the result on hydraulic characteristics with pier shapes in study(I), using a two-dimensional model(RMA-2) and an one-dimensional model(HEC-RAS). The pier shapes are classified into total six types such as square, rhombus, octagon, oval, round, and no-piers. The result of the backwater effect analysis showed that the backwater length is about 150 and 50m from HEC-RAS and RMA-2, respectively for all pier types. Although it is difficult to directly compare between results from the two models, the oval shape pier has shown similar results to the no-pier situation before the bridge construction in hydraulic characteristics. This analysis can help to select pier types in the new bridge construction for the future.

  • B23/nucleophosmin, a nucleolar protein, translocates into the nucleus from the nucleolus when cells are damaged by extracellular stresses. Recently, it was shown that such translocation of B23/nucleophosmin in normal fibroblasts under stress conditions increases both the stability and activation of the p53 protein by disrupting its interaction with MDM2. Senescent cells have a single large nucleolus and a diminished capacity to induce p53 stability upon exposure to various DNA damaging agents. To investigate the role of B23/nucleophosmin in p53 stability in senescent cells, we established a senescence model system by expressing the ras oncogene in IMR90 cells. The stability of p53 was reduced in these cells in response to nucleolar stress, although the level of B23/nucleophosmin protein was not changed. In addition, p53 did not accumulate in the nucleus and B23/nucleophosmin did not translocate into the nucleoplasm. The binding affinity of B23/nucleophosmin with p53 was reduced in senescent cells, whereas the interaction between MDM2 and p53 was stable. Taken together, the stability of p53 in ras-induced senescent cells may be influenced by the ability of B23/nucleophosmin to interact with p53 in response to nucleolar stress.

  • Grb2 is an important adaptor protein in the mitogenic Ras signaling pathway of receptor tyrosine kinases, and contains one SH2 domain and two SH3 domains. The SH2 domain binds to specific phosphotyrosine motifs on receptors or adaptor proteins such as Shc. The SH2 domain antagonists may lead to blocking of the oncogenic Ras signals and to developing new antitumor agents. In the course of screening SH2 antagonists from natural sources, cslerotiorin (1) and isochromophilone IV (2) were isolated from a strain, Penicillium multicolor F1753, and their structures were established by NMR spectral data. The metabolites significantly inhibited the binding between the Grb2-SH2 domain and phosphopeptide derived from the Shc protein, with $IC_{50}$ values of $22{\;}\mu\textrm{M}{\;}and{\;}48{\;}\mu\textrm{M}$ for (1) and (2), respectively. The compounds are the first nonpeptidic inhibitors of the SH2 domain from a natural source.

  • We have previously reported on the identification of the endogenous transmethylation inhibitor oligosaccharide-linked acyl carrier protein (O-ACP), In this study, the role of the transmethylation reaction on cell cycle progression was evaluated using various transmethylase inhibitors, including O-ACP. O-ACP significantly inhibited the growth of various cancer cell lines, including NIH3T3, ras-transformed NIH3T3, MDA-MB-231, HT-1376, and AGS. In addition, exposure of ras-transformed NIH3T3 to O-ACP caused cell cycle arrest at the $G_0/G_1$ phase, which led to a decrease in cells at the S phase, as determined by flow cytometry. In contrast, transmethylase inhibitors did not affect the expression of $p21^{WAF1/Cip1}$, a well known inhibitor of cyclin dependent kinase, indicating that the cell cycle arrest by transmethylase inhibitors might be mediated by a $p21^{WAF1/Cip1}$-independent mechanism. Therefore, O-ACP, a novel transmethylase inhibitor, could be a useful tool for elucidating the novel role of methylation in cell proliferation and cell cycle progression.

  • Pollution caused by fecal solids released from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is a growing global concern requiring immediate attention. Thus, this study investigated the physicochemical characteristics of fecal solid feed from RASs used for eel and rainbow trout farming. The concentrations of proteins, lipids, crude ash, and moisture in eel fecal solids were 10.9%, 1.2%, 85.8%, and 72.2%, respectively, while those in rainbow trout fecal solid feed were 20.5%, 3.2%, 70.9%, and 87.0%, respectively. The control group was fed a mixture of sea cucumber and dried sea mud. The protein digestibilities of eel and rainbow trout fecal solids were 25.43% and 23.96%, respectively, while the respective lipid digestibilities were 35.62% and 36.80%, respectively.

  • The frequency selective surface (FSS) embedded hybrid composite materials have been developed to provide excellent mechanical and specific electromagnetic properties. Radar absorbing structures (RASs) are an example material that provides both radar absorbing properties and structural characteristics. The absorbing efficiency of an RAS can be improved using selected materials having special absorptive properties and structural characteristics and can be in the form of multi-layers or have a certain stacking sequence. However, residual stresses occur in FSS embedded composite structures after co-curing due to a mismatch between the coefficients of thermal expansion of the FSS and the composite material. In this study, to develop an RAS, the thermal residual stresses of FSS embedded composite structures were analyzed using finite element analysis, considering the effect of stacking sequence of composite laminates with square loop (SL) and double square loop (DSL) FSS patterns. The FSS radar absorbing efficiency was measured in the K-band frequency range of 21.6 GHz. Residual stress leads to a change in the deformation of the FSS pattern. Using these results, the effect of transmission characteristics with respect to the deformation on FSS pattern was analyzed using an FSS Simulator.
