  • 4,4'-Methylenebis(2-chloroaniline)(MOCA) has been widely used as a crosslinking agent, but classified as a toxic chemical. Thus, its use will be limited in the near future. In this research, polyurethane coating films were prepared using 1,3-propanediolbis(4-aminobenzoate)(PDBA) as an alternative to MOCA. The base part was prepared by melting MOCA or PDBA in polyoxypropylene($M_n$=2000), followed by the addition of the various additives. The NCO-terminated toluene diisocyanate prepolymer was used as a curing agent. The polyurethane coating films were prepared by mixing the base part with the curing agent in an appropriate ratio at room temperature. The polyurethane coatings prepared using PDBA exhibited higher initial viscosity, but much longer pot lift, compared to those prepared using MOCA under the same conditions, due to lower reactivity of PDBA. The tensile strength and tear strength of the coating films were much weaker. However, the pot life, tensile strength, elongation, and tear strength of the coating films, prepared using PDBA in the presence of an increased amount of Pb(II)-octoate, were close to those of the coating films prepared using MOCA. Thus, it was concluded that PDBA can substitute MOCA in the preparation of polyurethane coatings as long as the reactivity of PDBA is enhanced using appropriate amounts of the catalyst or other appropriate catalyst.

  • Stern tube bearing is a shaft device playing important roles to reduce the friction of axial rotation and to support the weight of shaft. However, because there is no domestic producer of stern tube bering, imported stern tube bearings have many practical problems including prices, delivery and after services. This is why stern tube bearing should be localization. For the purpose of development of polyurethane resin for stern tube bearings, the effect of additives on the hardness, tensile strength and elongation of the polyurethane resin were systematically investigated. For the preliminary researches, depending on the type of curing agent, MOCA type and non-MOCA type polyurethanes were synthesized. Preliminary researches concluded that MOCA type polyurethane resin has more excellent mechanical properties than non-MPCA type for stern tube bearings that Tensile strength and Hardness of non-MOCA type investigated 23 D, 4.3 Mpa. Therefore, MOCA type polyurethane was adapted as base resin of this research. Silica, calcium carbonate and graphite were selected as additives for the enhancement of mechanical properties of polyurethane resin. Effect of the type and the dosage of these additives on the hardness, tensile strength, elongation of the polyurethane resin were experimentally examined. However, addition of calcium carbonate and graphite showed only minor effect on the hardness of the resin. Polyurethane resin with silica showed relatively excellent hardness, tensile strength and improved elongation.

  • PURPOSE: This study compared the scores of the Mini-Mental State Examination-Korean version (MMSE-K) and Korean version Montreal Cognitive Assessment (K-MOCA), which assess cognitive function, the Fugl- Meyer Upper-Extremity Assessment (FMA), which assess the upper extremity function; and Modified Barthel Index (MBI), which that assesses activities of daily living among patients receiving inpatient treatment following a diagnosis of stroke to determine the correlations among MMSE-K, K-MOCA, FMA, and MBI. METHODS: The study assessed the cognitive function using the MMSE-K and K-MOCA, upper extremity function using FMA, and activities of daily living using MBI. The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: An analysis of the differences in the MMSE-K, K-MOCA, MBI, and FMA scores according to the affected side, revealed differences in the, K-MOCA scores according to the affected side, where patients with right hemiplegia showed better cognitive function (p <.05). Correlation analysis among MMSE-K, K-MOCA, FMA, and MBI Showed significant correlations (p <.05). The results indicate that those with higher cognitive and upper extremity functions had higher performance of activities of daily living. CONCLUSION: The cognitive and upper extremity functions were correlated with the activities of daily living in stroke patients. Accordingly, applying physical therapy with a focus on improving the cognitive function and training activities of daily living could assist in the functional recovery of stroke patients significantly.

  • Thermal decomposition kinetics for two different types of polyurethane elastomers prepared with 2,2'-dichloro-4,4'-methylenedianiline (MOCA) and 3,5-dimethyl-thiotoluenediamine (Ethacure-300), based on PTMG/TDI isocyanate prepolymer, were studied using non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Thermograms were obtained and analyzed using Friedman (FR) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) methods for activation energy, $E_a$. The results obtained showed that decomposition reaction of both samples was observed similarly to occur through three different stages, i.e., initial stage with vaporization of low molecular weight materials, second stage of urethane linkage decompositions, and later stage of polyol segment decompositions. However, activation energy values at each stage for the sample cured with Ethacure-300 was much lower than those for the sample with MOCA, exhibiting relatively lower thermal stability for the sample with Ethacure-300 than that with MOCA.

  • In probabilistic production costing simulation, cumulant method is widely used. But this method have some limitations in some cases. To overcome these serious drawbacks, MONA(Mixture of Normals Approximation) method was proposed. The MONA method uses multiple normals to represent the Equivalent Load Duration Curve. In this paper we investigate the MONA's characteristics by comparing other methods and derive the efficient formulae for MONA. Also, we propose the fundamental algorithm for Mixture of Cumulants Approximation(MOCA) which is the general case of MONA.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze causality among sleep apnea, depression and cognitive function in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 105 patients with sleep apnea and snoring who underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG). We analyzed various biological data, sleep variables (sleep duration and percentage) and respiratory variables [arousal index (AI), periodic leg movement index (PLM index), snoring Index (SI), mean SpO2, minimum SpO2, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), and respiratory disturbance index (RDI)]. We also analyzed various data by sleep, cognition, and mood related scales: Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), snoring index by scale (SIS), Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Korean (Moca-K), Mini-mental State Examination-Korean (MMSE-K), clinical dementia rating (CDR), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). We analyzed causation among sleep, and respiratory, mood, and cognition related scales in obstructive sleep apnea patients. We analyzed the mediating effects of depression on sleep apnea patient cognition. Results: As Duration N1 increased and Total sleep time (TST) decreased, MOCA-K showed negative causality (p < 0.01). As BDI and supine RDI increased, causality was negatively related to MOCA-K (p < 0.01). As PSQI (p < 0.001) and SIS (p < 0.01) increased and as MMSE-K (p < 0.01) decreased, causality was positively related to BDI. BDI was found to mediate the effect of age on MOCA-K in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Conclusion: Duration N1, total sleep time, BDI, and supine RDI were associated with cognitive function in obstructive sleep apnea patients. Depression measured by BDI partially mediated cognitive decline in obstructive sleep apnea patients.

  • A study on reaction kinetics for a PTMG/TDI prepolymer with 2,2'-dichloro-4,4'-methylenedianiline (MOCA), of which formulations may be generally used for fabricating high performance polyurethane elastomers, was peformed using non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A number of thermograms were obtained at several constant heating rates, and analysed using Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) isoconversional method for activation energy, $E_a$ and extended-Avrami equation for reaction order, n. Urea formation reaction of the present system was observed to occur through the simple exothermic reaction process in the temperature range of $100{\sim}130^{\circ}C$ for the heating rate of $3{\sim}7^{\circ}C/min$. and could be well-fitted with generalized sigmoid function. Though activation energy was nearly constant as $53.0{\pm}0.5kJ/mol$, it tended to increase a little at initial stage, but it decreases at later stage by the transformation into diffusion-controlled reaction due to the increased viscosity. Reaction order was evaluated as about 2.8, which was somewhat higher than the generally well-known $2^{nd}$ order values for the various urea reactions. Both the reaction order and reaction rate explicitly increased with temperature, which was considered as the indication of occurring the side reactions such as allophanate or biuret formation.

  • Reaction kinetics of polyurethane elastomers (PU) were studied using dynamic DSC and TGA for three PU samples of general purpose (Sample A), high temperature cross-likable CASE purpose with MOCA (Sample B), and RT cross-likable CASE purpose grade (Sample C). From DSC results, sample with MOCA(Sample B) showed lower shift of peak temperature, while showing broader thermograms than those of general purpose grade (Sample A). On the other hand, RT cross-linkable PU grade (Sample C) showed an interesting double mode reaction patterns, i.e., a lower temperature reaction at about $70\;^{\circ}C$, and a higher temperature reaction in the range of $140{\sim}170\;^{\circ}C$, indicating that it requires 2-step reaction process in order to complete the reaction. Once the cross-linking reaction completed, however, TGA results showed that all the samples would be considered to have similar chemical structures, showing similar decomposition processes. Sample C, especially, had showed decomposition properties of both Sample A and Sample B. Formation activation energies calculated from Kissinger method showed 10.39, 65.85, 36.52(Low $T_p$) and 18.21(High $T_p$) kcal/mol, while decomposition activation energies were 31.94, 30.84, 24.16 kcal/mol, respectively.
