  • The first geostationary satellite made by Korea, COMS, has the three different payload ; Meteorological sensor, Oceanographic sensor and Ka-band communication payload. There are Meteorological & Ocean Data Communication Subsystem(MODCS) and Telemetry, Command and Ranging Subsystem(TC&R) as other RF radiation sources. MODCS transmits and receives Meteo and Ocean measurement data from/to earth using L-band and TC&R using S-band. The Ka-band communication payload will provide high-speed multimedia services and communication services for natural disaster such as prediction, prevention, and recovery services in the government communications network.Ka-band beacon is for the earth antenna pointing and the experiment of rain fading. This paper gives the analysis results about the mutual radiation effect on Ka-band communication payload, Ka-band beacon, MODCS and TC&R. Up/Down link power and coupling factor including the geometrical position and distance of antenna, filter rejection and degradation factor due to the different polarization are considered. The results show MODCS and TC&R are compatible for Ka-band communication payload and Ka-band beacon does not interfere with MODCS and TC&R normal operation.

  • The performances of millimeter wave Power amplifier have been improved by using PBG (photonic bandgap structure) in this paper. The PBG structure has been optimized to obtain the lowpass characteristics in Ka band and employed at output port of Ka band power amplifier. The harmonics of the power amplifier have been suppressed by the PBG of output port and the proposed PBG has suppressed the second harmonic to 40dBc around 50 GHz. The improvements of IMD and PAE of the amplifier employing the PBG structure are obtained $15\%$ and $25\%$, compared with those of the conventional Ka band power amplifier, respectively.

  • The study discussed the link analysis for the Ka band satellite broadcasting service in Korea with respect to the transmission schemes based on the DVB-S2 standard. To analyze the effect of the rain fading to the link budget, we estimated the rain attenuation from the measured rainfall intensity in Korea. We analyzed the link budget for the Ka band transponders of Koreasat-3, and DirecTV BSS-99W, and showed the possible link availability with the DVB-S2 transmission schemes for each transponder. Based on the link analysis of the available satellites with the Ka band transponders, we suggested the required EIRP for the satellite which will be employed for the Ka band satellite broadcasting service in Korea.

  • In this work, we developed fully integrated broadband MMIC chip set employing CSP(Chip Size Package) for K/Ka band applications. By utilizing an ACF for the RF-CSP, the fabrication process for the packaged amplifier MMIC could be simplified and made cost effective. $STO(SrTi_{3})$ capacitors were employed to integrate the DC biasing components on the MMIC, and LC parallel circuits were employed for DC feed and ESD protection. A pre-matching technique and RC parallel circuit were used to achieve a broadband matching and good stability fer the amplifier MMIC in K/Ka band. The amplifier CSP MMIC exhibited good RF performance over a wide frequency range in K/Ka band. This work is the first report of a fully integrated CSP amplifier MMIC successfully operating in the K/Ka band.

  • In this paper, the radiation properties of a Ka-band Von Karman radome are analyzed by using an IPO(Iterative PO) scheme. Since the operating frequency is very high, and the size of the considered radome is large, a numerical method cannot be directly applied to calculate the properties of the radome such as transmission loss, radome pattern, boresight error, etc. Hence, in this paper, an IPO scheme is used, which can efficiently consider the multiple interaction inside the radome. Also, the IPO scheme is based on the PO scheme, which is efficient and fast in a numerical point of view. The proposed scheme is verified based on Ku-band measurement data, and its feasibility for applicability to a higher frequency simulation is addressed through a simulation at the Ka-band.

  • The paper studied the scheme of applying the MPEG-4 SVC signal to the Ka band satellite broadcasting system through the JSCC system to resolve the rain fading problem generated when providing the Ka band HDTV satellite broadcasting service. The Ka band satellite broadcasting system is based on the VCM mode of the DVB-S2, and the SVC signal is considered as one of the spatial scalability, the SNR scalability and the temporal scalability. The JSCC system jointed all the layers of the source coding system and the channel coding system, and allocated bit rate to source coding and channel coding for each layer to get the optimum receiving quality. The layers are consists of a base layer and an enhancement layer, and the bit rate of each layer is affected by the SVC signal. The applicability of the three SVC signals to the Ka band satellite broadcasting service is analyzed with respect to the rain fading, and the scheme of applying the most excellent SVC to the service is considered.

  • We designed and manufactured Ka-band SSPA include drive amplifier and high power amplifier MMICs by $0.15{\mu}m$ GaN commercial process. Also, we fabricated main components micro-strip line to WR28 waveguide transition and WR28 wave guide power combiner for Ka-band SSPA. This Ka-band SSPA shows saturated output power 44.2 dBm, power added efficiency 16.6 % and power gain 39.2 dB at 29~31 GHz frequency band.

  • The Korean very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) network (KVN) and VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) Array (KaVA) is the first international VLBI array dedicated to high-frequency (23 GHz (K-band) and 43 GHz (Q-band)) observations in East Asia. To evaluate the imagine capability of KaVA, we performed imaging observations of three bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) known for their complex morphologies: 4C 39.25, 3C 273, and M87 by KaVA at K-/Q-band. Our KaVA images reveal extended outflows with complex substructure such as knots and limb brightening, in agreement with previous observations by other VLBI facilities. Angular resolutions are better than 1.4 and 0.8 milliarcsecond (max) at K-/Q-band, respectively. KaVA achieves a high dynamic range of ~1000, more than three times the value achieved by VERA. We conclude that KaVA is a powerful array with a great potential for the study of AGN outflows, at least comparable to the best existing radio interferometric arrays.

  • The TX/RX broadband L-type circular polarization antenna using LTCC at K/Ka band has been presented. This antenna has been analyzed in compensation for LTCC with relative permittivity 5.2 and could have been integrated with RF component. As the measured 10dB impedance circular polarization bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 7%(20.8GHz${\sim}$22.2GHz) at the K band and 2.3%(30.9GHz to 31.6GHz) at the Ka band. Also the gain of the antenna is -0.7${\sim}$3.05dBi at the K band and -2.8${\sim}$1dBi at the Ka band. The purpose of the research is to design an efficient antenna structure for satellite communication at K/Ka band. the antenna should be used for both TX and RX frequency bands. The antenna will be mounted on LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) so that it can be integrated with other RF circuits. This research is important because of the following reasons. 1) The frequency ranges of satellite communication tends to move up to higher frequency such as Ka band or milimeter wave band. 2) Design of antenna for smaller size, lighter weight and less loss is preferred by most RF engineers. 3) Antennas on LTCC enables to integrate the antenna with other RF circuits, and thus, one can reduce the size and loss of the RF system.
