  • We have been monitoring Sgr A*, the radio source at the center of our galaxy, continuously since G2 encounter was predicted. KaVA is a powerful High resolution imaging array at K and Q band, and it has a excellent uv-coverage for Sgr A*. Together with 1-Gbps recording, our observations have provided high-quality images of Sgr A* at Q-band. Our images reveal a scatter-broadened, elliptical Gaussian structure of the source. We found no significant flux or structural variation of Sgr A* in 2013-2014, which is consistent with recent simulations by Kawashima et al. Continuous monitoring in the coming few years would be able to capture the possible flux increase in the source caused by G2, which will lead to better understanding of the accretion process around supermassive black holes.

  • In this paper, we implemented a Ka-band frequency synthesizer for millimeter wave seeker. We improved frequency synthesizer performance of phase noise, resolution and spurious using the DDS driven hybrid method The proposed frequency synthesizer has the bandwidth of 1 GHz, frequency switching time of below 9 ${\mu}s$, suppressed spurious level of below -68.9 dBc. phase noise of -113.58 dBc/Hz at offset 100 kHz and flatness of ${\pm}$0.7 dB.

  • In this paper, the design of a channel filter and its group-delay-and-amplitude equalizer is carried out for the Ka-band satellite transponder subsystem. The 8th order dual-mode filter is employed for high selectivity around the band-edges with an elliptic-integral function response and has an in-line configuration. The 2-pole, reflection-type, group-delay equalizer is designed and manufactured to reduce the group-delay and amplitude variation, which can be large for such a high order filter. It is noted that in both the filter and equalizer, adopting the dual-mode coupling mechanism leads to less mass and volume. Through measurement, the performance of the realized group-delay-equalized filter is shown to meet the equipment requirements and to be appropriate for the satellite input multiplexer.

  • This letter presents a new polarizer which has a simple comb structure inside a circular waveguide. The electrical performance of the proposed comb polarizer is optimized by a circular waveguide radius and by the physical parameters of the comb plates. This polarizer is suitable for providing good performance in millimeter-band application because of its simple structure and low fabrication cost. In our experiments the dual-band comb polarizer designed in band 1(K) and band 2(Ka) showed good electrical performance without any tuning elements.

  • This paper evaluates the influence of rainfall on propagated signal at different time exceedance percentages of an average year, over the climate zones of the country. Specifically, it demonstrates critical and non critical signal fade or signal outage time exceedance (0.001% to 1%) for Ku, K, and Ka-band systems in an average year. The study was carried out using meteorological data made available by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) over a period of 10 years (2009-2018). The four climate zones in the country were represented by five (5) locations; Maidugiri (warm desert climate), Sokoto (tropical dry climate), Port Harcourt (tropical monsoon climate), Abuja and Enugu (tropical savanna climate). The parameters were simulated into the International Telecommunications Union Recommended (ITU-R) models for rain attenuation over the tropics and results presented using MatLab and Origin Lab. Results of Ku band propagations showed that only locations in the tropical savanna and tropical monsoon climates experienced total signal outage for time percentage exceedance equal to or below 0.01% for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. At K band propagations, the five locations showed to have experienced signal outage at time exceedance equal to and below 0.01%, almost same was recorded for the Ka-band propagation. It was also observed that horizontal and vertical polarization of signal had slightly different rain attenuation values for the studied bands at the five locations, with horizontal polarization having higher values than vertical polarization.

  • This paper presents the 8-channel active module operated in Ka-band. The module is designed for the mobile satellite communication antenna systems, and the module structure has the merit to minimize the size and weight of the antenna systems by 30% compared with the conventional systems using the active module composed of single channel. This module was designed to be optimally operated by prohibiting the electrical interference among the individual channels. From the test results of the fabricated 8-channel active module, it can be confirmed that the maximum channel gain error is ${\pm}1.3dB$, the minimum channel output power is 21.5dBm, and the maximum gain variation by phase control is ${\pm}1.0dB$.

  • In this paper, a Ka-band high-output active phased array antenna device applicable to small radars and seekers was designed, and the improved performance was studied. The radiation device assembly consists of 1x8 arrangements, and the step flared notch antenna type. It shows low active reflection loss characteristics in broadband, and low loss characteristics by applying the air-strip feeding structure, and is designed to enable beam steering up to 45 degrees. The TRM(transmit receive module) output power is more than 2.0W per channel using GaN HPA in the transmitting path, and satisfies more than 25.0 dB gain and less than 6.0 dB noise figure in the receiving path. Accordingly, the Effective Isotropically Radiated Power(EIRP) of the antenna unit shows the performance of 0.00 dB or more and the receive gain-to-noise temperature ratio(G/T) of 0.00 dB/k or more. For demonstration, we have designed aforementioned planar array antenna which consists of 64 radiating elements having a size within 130 mm x 130 mm x 300 mm and weight of less than 4.9 kg..

  • Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) was launched in 2010 with three payloads that include Ka-band communication payload developed by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). This study introduces a real-time remote vessel monitoring system built in the Socheongcho Ocean Research Station using the Ka-band communication satellite. The system is composed of three steps; real-time data collection, transmission, and processing/visualization. We describe hardware (H/W) and software systems (S/W) installed to perform each step and the whole procedure that made the raw data become vessel information for a real-time ocean surveillance. In addition, we address functional requirements of H/W and S/W and the important considerations for successful operation of the system. The system is now successfully providing, in near real-time, ship information over a VHF range using AIS data collected in the station. The system is expected to support a rapid and effective surveillance over a huge oceanic area. We hope that the concept of the system can be fully used for real-time maritime surveillance using communication satellite in future.
